Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 17,2007 Mustang girls outlast Tigers lose to Mustangs Pioneers in overtime By Kick Paullus A 24-10 advantage in the middle two quarters helped the Heppner Mus tang girls to a 53-36 win over the Stanfield Tigers on Friday, January 12, in Stan field in Blue Mountain Con ference Action. The Mus tangs, 5-0 in BMC play and 11 -2 overall, will be at home against Pilot Rock on Fri day, January 19, and at Weston-McEwen on Satur day, January 20. The girls held a slim 11-10 lead after one. getting four points each from Lyn- di Patton and Katie Kilken ny. They extended the lead to 23-16 at the half, getting Mustang boys fall to Mac-Hi five second-quarter points from Sherilyn Peck. Kilkenny had eight points in the third as the M ustangs increased their lead to 35-20 and Amber Pat ton had seven points and Lyndi Patton hit a three pointer as they cruised to the win. Kilkenny hit six of 11 shots for 12 points. Amber Patton hit four of six shots for 10 points and two steals, Regi Seitz had nine rebounds, Aftan Betsinger had eight rebounds. By Rick Paullus After dropping 44- 38 to the E n terp rise Outlaws on Friday, January 5, the Heppner Mustang J V girls came back with a 54- 27 win over the Elgin H uskies on S aturday, January 6, to end their road trip with a split. The Mustangs fell behind the Outlaws 18-9 over one but came back in the second getting seven points from Jessica Hughes to trail 29-23 at the half. Sarah Milner scored four points in the third and five in the fourth but the M ustangs could get no closer than six points as they took the loss. Milner finished w ith 13 points, four rebounds, and two steals with Hughes adding seven points and two assists. Kelsie Fox grabbed five rebounds and had two steals, Erin Price had four rebounds and Melissa West had three steals. It was a d ifferen t story the next day as the M ustangs jum ped on the Huskies for an 18-7 lead after one, getting 14 points from K risten Van C leave and continued the onslaught in the second getting five points from Hughes and four from Torri Lovgren, increasing their lead to 37-16 at the half. The Mustangs, 10-2 on the year, get back into Blue Mountain Conference play w ith a hom e game against Pilot Rock on Friday, January 19, and will be at Weston-McEwen on Satur day, January 20. The M ustangs led 11-4 after one, getting five points from Katie Kilkenny and four from Aftan Betsing- er and still led 21-18 at the half. The Pioneers got to within one at 21-20 before Betsinger scored twice off rebounds and Kilkenny hit two short jumpers to make it 29-20 and they eventually led 29-22 after three. The boys will return to Blue M ountain Conference play at home against the Pilot Rock Rock ets on Friday, January 19, and at Western-McEwen on Saturday, January 20. The Mustangs took an early 7-3 lead getting five points, including a three pointer from Lane Bailey and a short jumper from An dre Rauch but the Pioneers went on a 12-0 run to take a 15-7 lead. The teams then traded baskets the rest of the quarter as Aaron Allstott scored inside, Bailey and Rauch hit jumpers and Tony Haguewood scored inside to cut the Pioneer lead to 20- 15 after one. After a Pioneer three pointer, Nacho Elguezabal, M att M cCabe and Jared Huddleston each scored in-, side to cut the lead to 23-21 with the Pioneers eventually taking a 27-23 lead at the half as Justin Delveaux hit a jumper. The team s traded mini runs through the third as Elguezabal scored six points, Delveaux four points and McCabe and R.J. Far- rens each scored two. Bailey scored off a pass from Farrens to open the fourth and cut the lead to 41-39 but the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run before Huddleston hit a three point er to cut the lead to 50-42. Rauch scored three points, Elguezabal hit two free throw s and B ailey scored off a steal to make it 55-49 with 42.7 seconds left, but the Pioneers hit four of four free throws down the stretch to clinch the win. Elguezabal finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists with Bailey getting 11 points, four as sists, and two steals. Rauch had seven points and Farrens had eight assists with two steals. Cardinal Booster Club holds meeting The Cardinal Boost er Club met Monday, Janu ary 8. in the school library. 13 members were present. Thank you messag es were received from Arlyn- da Gates for the gift certifi cates for supervising the Basketball Bonanza, debate coach Jim Raible for support of the debate group, and the Dufur athletic director for providing meals for their players following the game in lone. The lone High School Hall of Fame consti tution was approved with two amendments: The dates were changed from prior to I960 and following 1960, and the first two years there will not be a limit on the number of new members in ducted. The next step in the process will be to publicize the Hall of Fame so individ uals can be nominated. • Lynn Dee Ram os gave an update on the weight room project. She expressed concern that the design was getting too expensive and needed to be scaled dow n to the basics. Club members agreed to support building a weight room with one uni sex bathroom (no outside access), a laundry room, and storage space for athletic equipment. Dean Robinson has spoken to the Hermiston High School athletic direc tor who has suggestions for grant applications for the project. Dawn Eynetich was thanked for organizing the community band. The band is practicing on Monday eve nings and playing at home games. There will not be a joint Heppner-lone booster club d in n e r at M orrow County Grain Growers. The club w ill be helping with concessions for the Cascade Locks game at lone on Saturday, January 13. Jim Raible. the conces sions coordinator, will be out o f town w ith the debate team.
