Published: December 14, 21, 28, 2005 and January 4 and 11, 2006 Water for Oregon agriculture off to a strong start As winter officially a p p ro a ch e s, the w ater o u tlo o k fo r O regon agriculture is off to a good start w ith recen t heavy sn o w fall in the h ig h er e lev a tio n s. But w eath er forecasters and others will tell you it is way too early to predict how much water will he available for farmers and ranchers come next summer. “The water year is like a nine-inning baseball game and we are only in the top of the second inning,” says Jim L ittle, m e te o ro lo g ist w ith the O regon D ep artm en t o f Agriculture. “We got a boost this past week when heavy precipitation in the form of snow b lan k eted the C ascades and other high elevations. T h at’s a nice start, but we are going to need more in the months to come.” O regon does not receive the summer rainfall that helps agriculture in the Midwest and other parts of the country. Instead, Oregon farmers and ranchers rely on irrigation, which, in turn, feeds o ff stream s and reservoirs. A strong buildup of snow in the mountains would be a welcome sight to anyone who will need water in the summer of 2006. “ Y ahoo,” says O D A ’s Jim Jo h n so n in response to the good start for the water season. “I’m hoping this will mean few, if any, drought declarations for the state next year.” Johnson helps to coordinate weather related disaster declarations for the governor each year. Before a late spring rush of rain e a rlie r this year, a majority of Oregon counties co n tem p late d m aking a req u est fo r d ro u g h t declarations. Snow will normally start to fall in the higher e le v a tio n s by m id- November. A week ago, the statewide snowpack was a h ealth y 108 p ercen t o f average for this time of the year. Then came last week’s heavy snowfall in much of the state. That pushed the s ta te ’s snow pack to 139 percent of average the best statew ide average o f all western states.
