forecasters and others will
tell you it is way too early to
predict how much water will
he available for farmers and
ranchers come next summer.
“The water year is
like a nine-inning baseball
game and we are only in the
top of the second inning,”
says
Jim

Agriculture. “We got a boost
this past week when heavy
precipitation in the form of
snow
b lan k eted
the
C ascades and other high
elevations. T h at’s a nice
start, but we are going to
need more in the months to
come.”
O regon does not
receive the summer rainfall
that helps agriculture in the
Midwest and other parts of
the country. Instead, Oregon
farmers and ranchers rely on
irrigation, which, in turn,
feeds o ff stream s and
reservoirs. A strong buildup
of snow in the mountains
would be a welcome sight to
anyone who will need water
in the summer of 2006.
“ Y ahoo,”

hoping this will mean few, if
any, drought declarations for
the state next year.” Johnson

The St. Patrick's Committee representatives Cara
Osmin and Claudia Hughes presented a $200 donation to
Heppner Elementary School Principal Jack Thompson this
Monday.
The donation will be used to provide lighting for
the tennis courts. A timer will be installed so that the lights
will be on at 4 p.m. and off at 9 p.m. during the winter
months. The lights will be available for those wanting to
play basketball also.
Donations for the project have come from the HHS
Booster Club $100, HES Parent Teacher Club $100 and
the Morrow County Health District $172.
