P lans for the old sw im m ing pool site in Heppner are off the drawing board and the C ity o f Heppner is seeking funds to put them into action. Moore Excavation brought in fill and leveled the site this summer as a service to the community while their company was here for the city w ater pipe p roject. P ublic m eetin g s held review ed several plans co n clu d in g th at a low maintenance project would be the best solution for this property. M orrow C ounty could fund only half of the city’s request from tippage fees for this project, which was enough to co v er expenses for ground sterilant to be applied. As additional funds become available, there will be gravel and river rock placed for weed control and split rail fencing for property boundaries. Basalt columns, boulders and berms planted with hardy perennials and grasses would contribute to the low maintenance project along w ith a bench for seating. To prom ote the A g ricu ltu ral M useum , a piece o f an tiq u e farm equipment would be placed lone ranks second in basketball poll in the area with signage about the museum. The Heppner Parks and B ea u tifica tio n Commission and the City Council are hoping for help w ith d o n a tio n s from interested individuals or businesses. Plans are made for m ajor contributors to have th e ir nam es laser carved on a boulder at the as of yet unnamed site. Those present were Steve Schaber, Anne Bedortha, Penny Krebs, Joe Rietmann, Dean Robinson, Dick Allen, Jeri M cE llig o tt, Shilo Svetich and Melissa LaRue. Members Ryan Rudolf and Sarah Carlson were absent. The minutes of the previous m eeting w ere approved. Chair Dean Robinson read the proposed changes to the b y -la w s, w hich w ere ap p ro v ed by co u n cil members. Principal Dick Allen provided test results of lone students in grades 3 ,5 ,8 and 10 over the past three years. The results included the proportion o f students at each level who did not meet, m et and ex ceed ed benchm arks. The results w ere then co m p ared to district and state results. Council members agreed to look over the scores and make recommendations for school improvement at the next meeting. Allen explained in detail the State Report Card results from the O regon Department of Education, lone Schools received a “ S tro n g ” ratin g . M ore students are meeting, but few er are exceeding, the standards. The Improvement Formulae goes back four years. T he sco res have improved from last year. lone School will be considered a Title I school next y e ar based on the num ber o f students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. The council received an elementary staff request to atten d an in -se rv ic e . Teachers have a contractual agreement to attend one paid in-service per year. Site Council recommends to the su p erin ten d e n t any lone Cardinals travel to Enterprise On December 21 st, Hope/Valby church volunteers are hosts for the noon meal at the senior center. The menu is roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy, baked winter squash, applesauce, hot rolls, juice and egg-nog. There may be last m inute changes in the menu because o f the availability of produce. Decorations for the Christmas season are in place in the common and dining areas. A Christmas get-together of residents took place Monday afternoon, Dec. 6. The apartment complex has welcomed two new residents in recent weeks. One is Alberta Johannes, who has sold her home in the area; the second is Kathy Turner, who has moved to Heppner from Texas. We extend a warm welcome to both. Kathy is responsible for the lovely grand piano, which is now in the common room. Recent examination of the roof revealed the need for repairs around the perimeter of the building. The need is at an urgent point. One resident has been moved to another unit because of leakage. The bus will not be scheduled for Walla Walla or the Tri-Cities from January 1st until March 1. Ed Baker has said to contact him if emergencies arise during this time. Activities at the center include Bingo Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Friday afternoons at 1 p.m. dominoes and cards are played in the common room. The team’s first game was at 7:30 p.m. Friday night against the Enterprise Outlaws, and the Cardinals beat them 67-48. L ead in g sco rers for the C ard in als w ere K elly Thompson 25, Paul Hams 15, and Tony Bolin 9. On Saturday, lone faced off with P ilo t R ock fo r the championship. lone fell to the Rockets 67-78. Leading sco rers w ere K elly Thompson 22, Tony Bolin 16, Paul Hams 10. Also coming off the bench and playing “very, very well,” according to coach Dennis Stefani was Kip Krebs with 8 points and 7 rebounds. The ju n io r varsity squad also tra v e led to E n te rp rise to play the Outlaws Saturday morning b efo re the v arsity tournament resumed. The Cardinals fell to the Outlaws 37-53. “That’s probably the best JV team w e’ll see this y e a r,” noted coach Jim Swanson, who was pleased w ith the way his team played. Total trails and hearing scheduled were 9, actually held 5. Total amount of revenue received was $38,942.96. The state received $9,755.50, the county $29,016.46, and restitution was paid in the amount of $171. Teleflora's Merry Mini Ornament Bouquets By Jenny Griffith and Kaylee Palmateer The lone Lady Cardinals went into triple overtime against Pilot Rock, Friday, Dec. 9 in their first game of the Enterprise Tournament. The Lady Cardinals led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, but they trailed by 17-19 at the half. Both teams stayed even throughout the third and the game was tied 29-29 going into the fourth. The score was then 37-37 at the end of the fourth, which took the game into its first overtime. Two overtimes later the Cardinals had possession with only a few seconds left on the clock, but weren’t able to get a shot off. The final score was 52-54 Pilot Rock wins. For the Cardinals: Ashly Grams had 9 points, Jenny Griffith 13, Amber Patton 15, Kylee Svetich 6, Emily Rietmann 3, and Stephanie Holland 6. The Lady Cardinals fell to the Wallowa Cougars in their second game on Saturday. The game was tied 13-13 at the half, and the Lady Cardinals lead 24-20 at the end of the third. The Cougars hit some shots in the fourth to put them ahead, and the Lady Cardinals weren’t able to regain their lead. The final score was 29-34, Wallowa. The boys and girls basketball teams both made it to district playoffs.
