Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 22,2005 - THREE HES Chess Club honored for T-shirt design HHS announces honor roll HES Chess Club leader Mary Ann Elguezabal, artist Vicente Navarrete, Chessmate club member Conner Pappas, volunteer James Pappas, Chessmate member Emily Pappas and leader Jannie Allen wearing award-winning T-shirts The H eppner Elementary School Chess Club recen tly received second place in the state out o f 36 teams for their club’s T-shirt design The T-shirt was desig n ed by V icente Navarrete, nephew o f HES chess leader and teacher Mary Ann Elguezabal. (See related story-HES mural.) Other leaders are teachers Jannie Allen and Sherry Matteson James Pappas is a Chess Club volunteer. Cardinal Booster Club holds meeting lo n e C ardinal Booster Club met Monday, June 6, at the school library. Tw elve m em bers w ere present. The Fourth o f July t-shirts are available for sale The blue sh irts w ith an embroidered logo cost $12 for children’s sizes and $15 for adult sizes. There is a limited quantity available so people are encouraged to buy early. Shirts may be purchased at the Bank o f Eastern Oregon. President LynnDee Ramos and Arlynda Gates have found a company that will make 500 wrist bands for the club to sell. Members agreed to order red and black bands w ith “ lone C ard in als” inscribed on them. Ramos will check to see if youth sizes are available. Dean Robinson and Del LaRue reported on the Athletic Hall o f Fame. The c rite ria they set up for selection is the ability to excel in at least two sports, maintaining good grades and having a positive attitude The first group to be honored will be from 1909- 1960. Robinson purchased plyw ood for the track recognition sign and had students prime and paint it The sign has been delivered to Marlene Pointer to have the names of donors added LaRue thanked the club for support o f the track a th le tes p articip atin g at d istric t and state competitions Greg Grant of H eppner sent thanks for providing G ato rad e and water to the baseball and golf teams. The tennis team sent a thank you note expressing their appreciation. The recipients o f the C ardinal B o o ste r Club sch o larsh ip w ere K asie Peterson, Sara Peck and Barbara Holland They will each receive $200 at the beginning o f their second term o f college. There is one parent vacancy on the lone Site Council. Anyone interested in serving a two-year term should contact LynnDee Ramos or Jeri McElligott The club will not sell t-shirts to Cycle Oregon participants. The annual Deschutes River raft trip has been cancelled for this year The C ardinal Booster Club will not meet in July, but will meet in A ugust b efo re school resumes Ranch history program set John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will offer a ranger-conducted program at the historic Cant Ranch. This o n e-h o u r program will feature the human history o f the James Cant Ranch Historic District The program will begin at 11 a m. on Saturday, June 25, on the front porch o f the Cant Ranch History M useum , lo cated on Highway 19 two miles north o f the in te rsec tio n with Highway 26. Fourth of July poster contest announced Artists o f all ages are encouraged to pick up their crayons, paints, colored pencils, m arkers, glitter, stickers, pencils and pens to enter the annual lone 4th of July Poster Contest. “This popular contest drew dozens o f entrants last year, with w onderful w orks o f art p o rtray in g the spirit o f Independence Day,” said a spokesperson The contest is fUnded through the lone TV Shoot, which is held each spring. Please call (541) 676-5922 Heppner benefit golf tournament scheduled A H eppner Youth A ctiv itie s B enefit G o lf T ournam ent has been scheduled at Willow Creek Country Club in Heppner on Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10 The tournament is open to everyone out o f high school and both novice and ex p erien ced g o lfers are encouraged to participate A barbecue steak dinner will be held at the clubhouse following play on Saturday. “The focus o f the tournament is to raise funds for a variety o f Heppner youth activities and have som e fu n ,” said Dave Allstott The latest donation the group made was $1,000 to the new track project at Heppner High School Other areas to receive funding include various sporting activities, band, the chess club, the M ike C urrin Memorial Scholarship and many other youth related activities C ost for the to u rn am en t is $45 per person and includes dinner Extra dinner tickets may be purchased for $10 each The tournam ent w inners will have a team photo and their names engraved on a plaque, which is on display in the high school trophy case.
