Photo by Sandy Matthews The Heppner Mustang girls’ softball team played against Umatilla on Saturday, April 30. Whitney Matthews took the win in the first game, with Heppner taking a 19-9 win Megan Orr pitched a no hitter in the same game, shutting out Umatilla, 14-0. Mustang JVs pound Rockets B y Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustang JV baseball team pounded out 16 hits, seven o f them for extra bases, as they beat the visiting Pilot Rock Rockets 17-6 in five innings as it was shortened by the 10-run rule on Thursday, April 28 They Mustangs, now 9-0 on the year, will be at home on M onday, May 9 for a doubleheader with Riverside beginning at 3:30 p.m The Rockets scored two runs in the top o f the first, but the Mustangs came back with eight runs in the bottom half after there were two out and no one on base. Andre Rauch singled, Nacho Elguezabal walked, Robbie Smith was hit by a pitch, Rauch scored on a wild pitch, Colton Hanson scored tw o w ith a single, Ben McCarl, Kody Lovgren and Justin A rcher w alked to force in another run Nathan Kennedy scored two with a single and Sean M urray scored tw o more with a single The Rockets scored another run in the second, but the Mustangs answered as McCarl was hit by a pitch and scored on a Lovgren double The Mustangs added three more in the third as Rauch doubled, Elguezabal w aked and both runners moved up on a passed ball Smith hit a sac fly to score Rauch, Hanson had an RBI single, McCarl singled and Lovgren scored a run on a fielder’s choice They put the game aw ay in the fo u rth as Kennedy doubled, Rauch had an RBI double, Elguezabal had an RBI triple and came home as the throw to third bounced over the fence Smith singled and came around to score on a R icky M artin single, Lovgren doubled and scored on an Archer single to make it 17-4. The Rockets scored two runs in the fifth and had the bases loaded with one out but Hollis came on in relief and got two outs to end the game Kennedy went three innings giving up four hits and three earned runs to pick up the win Rauch went three for three scoring three runs. Hanson went two for four with three RBI and scored twice. Lovgren and Archer each went two for three with two RBI Kennedy went two for five with two RBI and scored twice Murray had two RBI, Elguezabal scored th re e runs, Sm ith and McCarl each scored twice and Martin went one for one with an RBI. Ten o f the 11 Mustangs that played had at least one hit. The M ustangs, now 8-0 on the year, will be at home for a doubleheader with Riverside beginning at 3:30 p m on Monday, May 9 The M ustangs got on the board early with three runs in the bottom of the first when Cody Hollis walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Andre Rauch sac fly. N acho E lguezabal and Robbie Smith singled and both scored on a Colton Hanson double They added five more in the second when Kody Lovgren and Nathan K ennedy w alked, H ollis reached on a sacrifice bunt that scored Lovgren and Rauch had an RBI single Smith and Hanson walked and three more scored on wild pitches and passed balls The Vikings came back with three runs in the top o f the third, but the Mustangs answered in the b ottom h a lf as Lovgren walked and was sacrificed to second by Sean Murray. Kennedy and Hollis walked to load the base and Justin Archer walked to force in a run. Smith scored two with a single and another run scored on a passed ball to make it 11-3. The Mustangs added two more in'the fourth when Lovgren reached on an error, Ricky Martin walked, one run scored as K ennedy reached on an erro r and another scored as Hollis grounded out Rauch w ent four innings to pick up the win, strik in g out nine and allow ing tw o hits, w ith Kennedy pitching a scoreless fifth, striking out two. Smith went two for tw o with three RBI and scoring twice Hollis had four RBI and scored three times Hanson was one for one with a double and two RBI, Rauch had two RBI, Lovgren scored three times and Kennedy scored two runs In the night cap, the Vikings scored three runs in the top o f the first, but the Mustangs came back with eight runs of their own in the bottom half Kennedy and Hollis singled, Matt McCabe w as hit by a pitch and Elguezabal walked to force in a run Smith cleared the bases with a double. They added tw o more in the second when Archer walked, stole second and scored on a double by M urray, who scored as K ennedy reached on an error another run in the third, but the Mustangs exploded with 10 runs in the bottom half to put the game away McCabe reached on an error, E lg u ezab al singled and Rauch scored them with a double. Rauch scored as Archer reached on an error, Murray reached on an error, Martin had an RBI single, Lovgren had an RBI single, Ben M cC arl w alked, McCabe had an RBI single and Elguezabal hit a grand slam home run to centerfield to make it 20-4. The Vikings scored three runs in the fourth, but it wasn’t nearly enough and the gam e was called on account o f darkness McCabe went three plus innings to pick up the win, with Kennedy pitching the fourth in relief Elguezabal went two for two with six RBI and scored three times. The Mustangs fell to 3 and 3 in the CBC and 10 and 5 overall They will play the H erm iston JV in a n on league d o u b leh ead er on Thursday, May 5 at 3 p.m. and will get back into CBC play w ith a hom e gam e against Stanfield on Tuesday, May 19 at 4:30 p.m The Rockets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and increased it to 4-0 in the fourth before the Mustangs got on the board with a homerun by Kory Paullus. T he M ustangs narrowed the game to 4-3 in by Josh G u tierrez and Paullus, but couldn’t get any c lo ser and th e R ockets added an insurance run in the seventh to make the final 5- 3. With the sweep, the Mustangs improved to 5-3 in the CBC and 12-5 overall They will be at home for a non-league doubleheader against the Hermiston JV before returning to CBC play for a single game at home against Stanfield on Tuesday, May 10 at 4:30 p.m. The M ustangs got on the board early in the first game scoring a run in the bottom o f the first when Jode Coil reached on an error, sto le second and scored on a Kory Paullus single. They added six more in the second when Dan B asile singled and was moved to second on a Matt M cC abe bunt Sloan K eithley w alked, Kyle Carlson had an RBI single and Coil hit a three-run home run to right-centerfield Nick Christman walked, Paullus reached on an error, Quinn Peck walked and two runs scored as Basile reached on a fielder’s choice The T ig ersco ts scored their lone run o f the day in the top o f third but the Mustangs came back with two in the bottom half when C arlson singled, Josh G u tierrez doubled and Paullus scored both with a single to make it 9-1 The M ustangs put the game away in the fourth w hen C o lto n H anson walked, M att Kenny and Coil singled, G u tierrez scored two with a single, C hristm an had an RBI single, Paullus scored two more with a double, Peck walked, Basile singled and an o th er run scored as Hanson reached on an error to make it 15-1 Gutierrez picked up the win striking out five and allow ing no hits w ith Christman pitching the fifth inning in relief to complete the no-hitter Paullus went three scoring twice Coil went two for four with three RBI, a homerun and scored three runs. Basile went two for four with two RBI. Carlson went two for two scoring twice, G utierrez had two RBI and scored tw ice, Christman went one for two with two runs scored and Peck went one for one The M ustangs continued th eir scoring onslaught with seven runs in the bottom o f the first in the second game without getting a hit. Coil was hit by a pitch, Gutierrez, Christman and Paullus walked to force in a run. Peck scored a run on a fielder’s choice, two more scored when Basile reached on a fie ld e r’s choice, M cC abe w alked, B asile scored w hen C arlson reached on an error who scored when Coil reached on an error. It stayed that way until the fifth when with two o u ts G u tierrez and C hristm an singled and Paullus ended the game with a home run. Coil w ent four innings striking out six and allowing three hits to pick up the win with Christman again pitching the fifth inning in relief.
