Dir. O regon C ham ber Day at the Capitol was last Thursday. Though it was a last minute decision to at tend, I found it to be well worth my time Two hundred Cham ber m em bers attended a morning session in the Salem Conference Center. This in cluded talks by Speaker o f the House Karen Minnis, House Minority Leader Jeff Merkley, Senate Majority L eader K ate B row n and Senate Minority Leader Ted Ferrioli on school funding, health care, death tax and jobs. Some interesting solu tions for funding education were presented All stressed the importance o f activism, especially because o f our di versity. One message deliv ered was, “make state enter prise small so communities can grow.” The C hair o f the Senate Land Use Commit tee, Charlie Ringo, and the Chair o f the House Land Use Committee, Bill G arrard, gave legislative updates on land use and Measure 37. One size certainly does not fit all, which was quite obvi ous after these two men fin ished sharing their ideas for solutions and answering au dience generated questions. No sugarcoated presenta tions here The audience had the opportunity to ask questions throughout the morning ses sion Senator Ferrioli gave examples o f over regulation stories and encouraged all of us to share them in Salem Many there will not know if we do not tell them H ealth C are for small businesses and Work- m an ’s Com p Legislation were also sessions o f inter est. All discussions were en lightening and caused one to see that it is indeed a mira cle when the entities in Sa lem come together on a de cision. Governor Ted Ku- longoski was the keynote speaker for the luncheon af te r which the group ad journed to the State Capitol I sat in on Representative G reg S m ith ’s W ays and M eans subcom m ittee on economic and community developm ent and visited with Senator David Nelson in his office I encourage you to visit your State Capitol, sit in on the sessions and visit with your senator or repre sentative. Write to them, e- mail them, call them and communicate They are there to represent everyone Tell your story over and over and over, so Salem understands how the laws they implement affect rural Oregon. When we raise our children, we learn that each is unique and different and should be treated according ly to enhance their strong traits. By the same token, rural and urban are different and they should not be put in the same box. One size does not fit all All legisla tors should be invited to get to know the entire state Think about how we might make this happen The Ways and Means committee meet ing in Heppner a few weeks ago, organized by G reg Smith, was a beginning We are at a turning point in legislation when the less said is not for the better Stand up for what you be lieve, listen, learn and be re ceptive to change. Luckily for us, all the members whose terms are up have decided to run for re-election This makes the decision a no- brainer for me, as it should for every voter in the county, particularly the voters in Irrigon. John R enfro, Bill Kuhn and Barney Lindsay all voted to return to Irrigon High School Personally, I believe that is, absolutely, the best thing that has ever happened to o u r tow n Certainly we will not turn our backs on them now. B erto H ernandez was appointed to his position but has been a valuable asset There is much to learn for a new b o ard m em ber and Berto has been eager to learn all he can We do not need to start over w ith an inexperienced person Our district remains one o f the few financially stable districts in the state. Every student in this district can expect to be offered the best e d u catio n th at is possible No school should ex p ect p re fe re n tia l treatm ent, it just will not happen Serving on a school board is not just a matter of attending one meeting every month These gentlem en devote many hours a month to the management o f this school d istric t. One candidate kept track o f the hours his first year and was amazed to learn that he spent less time on his job The dedication o f these people is astronomical and the pay is the satisfaction in seeing the children o f Morrow County be the best they can be We have a good thing going in this county Please support the people that have m ade M CSD successful (s) Meredith DeHaven Irrigon The Willow Creek Water Park T H E R A P Y POOL in Heppner is OPEN!
