Eugene, CP * 74,>3 Ken Türner Ken Turner, a lifelong Heppner resident, will be presiding as this year’s Great Green Parade’s grand marshal The parade will be held Saturday, March 20 at 1 p m down Main Street in Heppner Turner is the son of Sam and Nora D oherty Turner He says his Irish ro o ts come from his m o th e r’s D oherty side, stretching back to 1883 when his g re a t-g re a t- g ra n d m o th e r C atherine Grant Doherty came from C arndonagh, C ounty Donegal, Ireland, following her d a u g h ter Sarah, to Oregon In 1801, Catherine and her sons, Barney and Jam es (T u rn e r's g ra n d fa th e r), began homesteading Blackhorse Canyon A round the same time, 1880, Turner s great uncles came to M orrow County and started their homestead in Sandhollow Canyon, which parallels Blackhorse Turner’s father, fifth o f seven and his mother, third of 13, met and were married in 1926 and had him in 1935. He attended schools in Heppner and graduated with a degree in agriculture from O regon State University After graduating from college. Tuner returned back to Sandhollow and took over the family ranch after the sudden death of his father Jn 1958, he married Jean Ann Swanson o f lone and brought her back to the Sandhollow farm where they raised four daughters, Cheryle Anne, Lori Marie, Melissa Jean and Sandra Lee C heryle (G reg g ) Rietinann, Lori (Wayne) Seitz and Melissa (Todd) Lindsay, all live in Morrow County with their families and Sandra (Doug) Martin living in Sherman County T urner also has eight grandchildren and said that one more is on the way One o f the biggest changes that T urner has made to the original family farm is the expansion o f the irrigation Turner has since “retired” and his daughter Melissa and son-in-law Todd now run most o f the farm operations To connect with his Irish roots, Turner plans on traveling to Ireland in July to p a rtic ip a te in the fifth w o rld w id e reunion o f Dohertys Turner will be one o f 35 cousins for the Northwest and 100 total from the US traveling to Ireland Turner has also been active throughout the years in Morrow County working with the Willow Creek Park D istrict and M orrow Conservation District, as well as being an Elks member for 47 years and a past Chamber Man o f the Year.
