W hile w orking to in stall a m anhole near Heppner Elementary School, a backhoe being operated by H eppner Public W orks D irecto r B ruce N elson, tipped over Nelson said he received a few bruises but was not hurt The m anhole was being in stalled to help alleviate the sewage problem that caused HES’s flooding Feb 24. As it was, there was no way for the city to clean roots out o f the line near the school The closest manhole w as lo cated near the fa irg ro u n d s Now, if a problem begins to occur, the city can use the manhole to clean the lines While w orking on the c o n stru ctio n o f the m anhole, one o f the backhoe’s tires was on the sidewalk and the others were on “ lev el” g ro u n d As N elson was using the backhoe to shake gravel into place, one o f the backhoe tires slipped into the hole and caused it to tip Nelson said th at in his 20 y ears o f experience this was the first time he has had a “close call.” lone School Board hears greenhouse, bowling team proposals VOL. 124 NO. 10 8 Pages Wednesday, March 9, 2005 Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon lone School District te a c h e r D uane N eiffer o u tlin ed plans for the school’s greenhouse at the b o a rd ’s reg u lar m eeting rescheduled for March 7. Neiffer told the ISD Board o f plans to build a holding area to store soils in the greenhouse and for a com m unity g ard en . He reported that a $900 grant for co n tin u a tio n o f the greenhouse and a grant for establishing a community garden have been received He said th at he is also looking at an aquaculture program to raise fish and p ro v id in g ad d itio n a l landscaping down the creek. Neiffer also outlined a CAPECO funded program that would provide jobs for six students this summer- two for the city o f lone and four for the schools He said that the program would provide “close to $30,000 for labor and materials.” N eiffer also requested that the school bowling team be added to the d is tric t’s M orrow County Unified Recreation D istrict b u d g et for extracurricular activities He said th at the am ount req u ested w as a small amount, but noted that the team is comprised o f 10-15 students, “close to a quarter of our student body ” “It's an ongoing activity enjoyed by a q uite a num ber o f students,” said Neiffer He also said that many o f the students who participate on the bowling team do not participate in other sports The lone boys (top) bring home the 3rd place state basketball trophy.
