Photo by Sandy Matthews The Heppner Mustang JV girls used a good start to beat the visiting Umatilla Vikings 25-17 in a defensive struggle on Friday, Jan 28 The Mustangs improved to 7 and 6 on the year and will be at home against Pilot Rock on Friday, Feb 4 and at Weston-McEwen on Tuesday, Feb 8 Regi Seitz had five points, including a 3-pointer, and Cyde Coil four as the Mustangs took a 9-4 lead after one and held a I f -7 lead at the half The Mustangs still led 18-13 after three and Coil hit a 3-pointer and Katie Kilkenny scored three points in the fourth as they pulled away for the 25-17 win Coil finished with eight points, with Seitz adding seven points, three rebounds and two steals. Kilkenny had five points and nine rebounds, Lynan Bingham had three rebounds and two assists, Aftan Betsinger and Baillie Keithley each had three rebounds and Taylor Kempas had two assists. Peck led the M ustangs with 12 points, with Elguezabal adding nine points and McCabe finishing with eight points. The Mustangs, 2 and 7 in the CBC and 5 and 11 overall, will be at home on Friday, Feb. 4 against Pilot Rock and at Weston- McEwen on Tuesday, Feb 8 need to win both games to have a chance at making the district tournament The Mustangs took a 17-12 lead after one, getting six points from Matthew VanCleave; five points, including a 3-pointer, from Gus Torres; and four points from Rory Kilkenny. Kory Paullus had four points and Josh Gutierrez hit a 3-pointer in the second, but the Huskies came back to take a 32-26 lead at the half Torres hit a 3-pointer in the third, but the Huskies extended their lead to 47-34 after three and VanCleave had all four o f the Mustangs’ points in the fourth as they couldn’t buy a basket. VanCleave had 11 points, with Torres adding eight points and Kilkenny six. Photo by Sandy Matthews An 11-2 run to close out the game helped the Heppner Mustang varsity girls rally to a 34-31 win over the visiting Umatilla Vikings on Friday, Jan. 28 in Columbia Basin Conference play The Mustangs, 6-2 in the CBC and 14-3 overall, will be back at home on Friday, Feb 4 against Pilot Rock then at W eston- McEwen on Tuesday, Feb 8 against the league-leading Tigerscots The Mustangs built a 12-9 lead after one, getting six p o in ts from Susan Southworth and at the end o f a defensive second quarter, Regi Seitz hit a lay- in on a pass from Terra Wilson to give them a 16-13 lead at the half Southworth scored off a drive and Megan Orr scored o ff a pass from Shanna Rietmann to open the second half and give the Mustangs a 20-13 lead They went cold from there tough as all they could muster was a free throw from Linsey Mitchell and two from Seitz as the Vikings pulled to w ithin 23-21 after three quarters The Vikings went on an 8-0 run to take a 29-23 lead until Orr scored off a drive and Madison Bailey hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 29-28 midway through the fourth Rietmann hit two free throws to give the Mustangs a 30-29 lead with 3:10 left then Bailey and Mitchell each hit one o f two to make it 32-29 with 2 12 left After a Viking basket, Rietmann hit two o f four free throws in the final minute to give the Mustangs a 34-31 lead then * blocked a shot in the last seconds, which M itchell rebounded and held on for the win. Southworth scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and had three assists. Rietmann added six points, 10 rebounds and three assists Orr also had six p o in ts, along w ith five rebounds and three assists.
