Big advantages in the second and fourth quarters
helped the Heppner Mustang JV boys to a rout o f the
Sherman County Huskies on Saturday, Jan 29 in Moro by
a score o f 68-42. The win improves the Mustangs' record
to 7 and 5 on the year and they will be at home on Friday,
Feb 4 against the Pilot Rock Rockets before going on the
road on Tuesday, Feb 8 at Weston-McEwen
Justin Delveaux hit a 3-pointer in helping the
Mustangs into a 12-12 tie with the Huskies after one Lane
Bailey then had six points, Quinn Peck four and Tony
Haguewood and Brendan McElligott three each in the
second quarter as they took a 34-23 lead into the half
The Mustangs extended their lead to 49-32 after
three, getting four points from Delveaux, three from Matt
McCabe and a 3-pointer from Bailey Nacho Elguezabal
had eight points and Andre Rauch six as the Mustangs
cruised through the fourth to the easy win
Elguezabal led three Mustangs in double figures
with 14 points, with Bailey adding 13 points and Peck
adding 10 points Delveaux had nine points and Rauch had
eight

The Heppner Mustang JV girls used a good start
to beat the visiting Umatilla Vikings 25-17 in a defensive
struggle on Friday, Jan 28 The Mustangs improved to 7
and 6 on the year and will be at home against Pilot Rock
on Friday, Feb 4 and at Weston-McEwen on Tuesday, Feb
8
Regi Seitz had five points, including a 3-pointer,
and Cyde Coil four as the Mustangs took a 9-4 lead after
one and held a I f -7 lead at the half
The Mustangs still led 18-13 after three and Coil
hit a 3-pointer and Katie Kilkenny scored three points in
the fourth as they pulled away for the 25-17 win
Coil finished with eight points, with Seitz adding
seven points, three rebounds and two steals. Kilkenny had
five points and nine rebounds, Lynan Bingham had three
rebounds and two assists, Aftan Betsinger and Baillie
Keithley each had three rebounds and Taylor Kempas had
two assists.

An 18-10 advantage in the third quarter carried the
Heppner Mustang JV boys to a 48-38 win over the visiting
Umatilla Vikings on Friday, Jan 28 The Mustangs, now 6
and 5 on the year, will be at home on Friday, Feb. 4 against
Pilot Rock before going to Weston-McEwen on Tuesday,
Feb 8
The two teams were tied at 7-7 after one as the
M ustangs got four points from Matt McCabe The
Mustangs took a slim 21-20 lead at the half as Quinn Peck
scored four points, Justin Delveaux hit a 3-pointer and
Nacho Elguezabal had three points in the second quarter
Peck and Elguezabal each had four points during
the third quarter run and Peck added four more points and
Lane Bailey hit a 3-pointer in the fourth as the Mustangs
held on for the 10-point win.
Peck led the M ustangs with 12 points, with
Elguezabal adding nine points and McCabe finishing with
eight points.

Mustang boys lose to Sherman
After jumping out to a lead in the first quarter, the
Heppner Mustang boys’ varsity went cold as the Sherman
County Huskies came back to take a 61 -38 win on Saturday,
Jan. 29 at Moro in Columbia Basin Conference play. The
Mustangs, 2 and 7 in the CBC and 5 and 11 overall, will be
at home on Friday, Feb. 4 against Pilot Rock and at Weston-
McEwen on Tuesday, Feb 8 need to win both games to
have a chance at making the district tournament
The Mustangs took a 17-12 lead after one, getting
six points from Matthew VanCleave; five points, including
a 3-pointer, from Gus Torres; and four points from Rory
Kilkenny. Kory Paullus had four points and Josh Gutierrez
hit a 3-pointer in the second, but the Huskies came back to
take a 32-26 lead at the half
Torres hit a 3-pointer in the third, but the Huskies
extended their lead to 47-34 after three and VanCleave
had all four o f the Mustangs’ points in the fourth as they
couldn’t buy a basket.
VanCleave had 11 points, with Torres adding eight
points and Kilkenny six.

lead until Orr scored off a

a 3-pointer to cut the lead to
29-28 midway through the
fourth Rietmann hit two free
throws to give the Mustangs
a 30-29 lead with 3:10 left
then Bailey and Mitchell
each hit one o f two to make
it 32-29 with 2 12 left After
a Viking basket, Rietmann
hit two o f four free throws
in the final minute to give the
Mustangs a 34-31 lead then
