Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Mustang JV girls nip Eagles to end season By Rick Paullus A late run helped the Heppner Mustang JV girls to a 31 -30 win over the visiting Wahtonka Eagles on Friday, Feb. 13 in their final game of the season. The M ustangs ended the year with a 10-8 record and were coached by Chris Rauch. Members of the team were junior Sandra Krotzek, sophomores Lynan Bingham, L a u rie M urray , C h e lse y Betsinger, Britney Herbison, Heather Yocom and Ashley Zimmerm an and freshmen Lyndi Patton. Regi Seitz, Sarah P ric e and M ah ale y Huddleston. The M ustangs fell behind 8-5 after one and trailed 17-11 at the half, despite four second-quarter points from Price. Seitz had four points in the third as they came back to tie it at 19-19 going into the fourth. Betsinger had five points in the fourth and Price hit three of four free throws including two with 20 se c o n d s le ft to g iv e the M ustangs a 31-30 lead and they held on for the win. P ric e had sev en points, four rebounds and three steals. Seitz had six points, four rebounds and two s te a ls . P a tto n h ad six rebounds, six steals and three assists. Mustang JV boys fly past Eagles to end season By Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustang JV boys ended their season by easily beating the visiting Wahtonka Eagles 74- 20 on Friday, Feb. 13. The Mustangs, coached by Chuck Matteson, ended the year with an 18 and 2 record. The team consisted of juniors Josh Gutierrez, Kyle Huddleston. Robert McElligott and Kory Paullus; sophomores Roy Proctor, Kyle Carlson, Dan B asile, M att K enny, M atthew VanCleave, Mikel Britt and Rory Kilkenny, with freshm an Justin D elveaux floating up from the C-team the last couple of weeks. The Mustangsjumped out to a 16-3 lead after one, getting six points from Paullus and four from Britt. They extended the lead to 33-8 at the half, getting six second- q u a rte r p o in ts fro m V anC leave. B ritt had six points, Gutierrez, Paullus and V anCleave each had four points and Proctor hit a 3- pointer as they increased their lead to 56-18 after three. Huddleston had eight points, Britt six and Proctor four, including another 3-pointer, as they coasted to the easy win. B ritt led fo u r Mustangs in double figures with 19 points. Mustang girls beat Rockets By Kick Paullus T he H ep p n er Mustang girls’ varsity beat a stubborn Pilot Rock Rockets team 53-39 on Tuesday, Feb. 10 in C o lu m b ia B asin C o n fe re n c e play. T he Mustangs improved to 6 and 7 in the CBC and 8 and 13 overall and had one game remaining before facing the Rockets again on Friday, Feb. 20 in Pendleton at the district tournament. The M ustangs took an early 3-0 lead on a free throw from Chelsea Britt and a short jum per by Shanna R ietm ann. Then after the Rockets had tied it, Rietmann scored inside and Britt scored off a rebound to make it 7-3. Stefanie Hanson made a lay- in, Linsey Mitchell scored off a rebound to make it 11-5. Brooke Rust scored off a drive to m ake it 13-7 then fed Hanson for a lay-in to give the Mustangs a 15-11 lead after one. Hanson hit a running jumper to open the second, but the Rockets narrowed the gap to 18-16 b e fo re B ritt converted a three-point play and Rietmann scored twice inside to make it 25-16. Laurie Murray hit two free throws and Britt scored off a rebound to make it 29-20 at the half. A fter a R ocket 3- pointer to open the third, Mitchell scored off a pass from Terra Wilson then the teams traded baskets as Britt scored twice inside and Rietmann hit a jumper as the Mustangs took a 37-29 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Rockets got to within 37-32, but Mitchell hit a jum per and Hanson hit two free throws and scored off a steal and Rust scored off a drive, then hit two free throws to make it 47-33. Rietmann hit a turn around jum per. Rust sc o re d o ff a p ass from Mitchell and Wilson hit two free throws to put the game away. Britt had 12 points and eight rebounds. Rietmann had 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Hanson had 10 points, seven rebounds and tw o steals. Rust had nine points, two assists and two steals and Katie Britt had two steals. Mustang girls fly past Eagles By Rick Paullus The H ep p n er Mustang girls’ varsity built a 10 point lead in the first half and flew past the visiting Wahtonka Eagles 56-32 on Friday, Feb. 13 on senior night. The game marked the final home game for seniors Stefanie Hanson and Brooke Rust. The win improved the Mustangs record to 7 and 7 in the CBC and 9 and 13 overall heading into the District 7 2A tournament in Pendleton on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21. The M ustangs took an 18-8 lead after one, getting six p o in ts from S h an n a Rietmann. four points from Rust and a 3-pointer from Katie Britt. Hanson had five points, including a 3-pointer, and Britt hit another 3-pointer as they took a 34-24 lead into the half. The Mustangs led 40- 28 after three and got six points from Rietmann, four from Rust and a 3-pointer from Britt as they coasted through the fourth for the win.
