M a n y pieces are signed and dated, w ith the oldest pieces being m a d e in 1954. A bout 30 m inutes after the detection, employees w ere cleared to unm ask and return to work. All readings since the initial detection outside the s to r a g e s tr u c tu r e h a v e indicated no further release. The incident was confined to a small portion o f the D epot’s nerve agent storage area. E m e r g e n c y operations centers in Umatilla an d M o rro w C o u n tie s in O regon, B enton C ounty in W ashington and the states o f Washington and Oregon were notified. T he C onfederated Tribes o f the U m atilla Indian R eservation and the O regon Department o f Environmental Quality also were notified. Christmas Piano Recital in Heppner on Dec. 15 Sixteen local piano students will be performing at a C hristm as Piano Recital in H eppner on M onday night, D ec. 15, at 7 p.m . a t th e Christian Life Center Church. T he stu d en ts range in age from 5 to 16. Some are beginners and others have been playing for several years. Several years ago Mrs. W inchester gathered all the pieces together in order th a t th e y a g a in m ig h t be displayed as intended. A s the original site could no longer accom m odate the scene, it w as m o v ed to its p re se n t location, 68970 Willow Creek R d . O n c e a g a in , th e community can enjoy this true exam ple o f great A m erican folk art. The nativity scene can be view ed on the hill to the right ju st before the W illow Creek Reservoir v iewpoint on Willow Creek Rd. It will be lit from 5 p.m. to approxim ately 8:30 p.m. It’s w orth the drive and you can take in the lights at Lakeview Heights on your way. T he se v en th g rad e Ponies traveled to Pilot Rock to take on the R ockets, on Friday, Dec. 5. They will start tournam ent play on Saturday, Dec. 13 back at Pilot Rock. It was a frigid first half fo r th e v i s i t in g P o n ie s , m anaging only tw o points in the first quarter and one in the second. The Ponies turned on the burners in the second half and came back to tie the game at the end o f regulation play. They did have a chance to win it, but the last second shot bounced o ff the rim. In o v e rtim e so m e clutch free throw shooting kept them in the gam e, but it w asn ’t enough for them to prevail. The Ponies were short handed due to illnesses and injury so Taylor Hodges, Jason H o u w e lin g a n d M ic h a e l Wellman from the eighth grade team stepped in to help out. The tea m ’s scorers w ere Joe P ra n g e r w ith tw o p o in ts, D alton W ellm an w ith eight, Spencer Palmer with 15, Josh Shank with tw o and M ichael Wellman with one. H eppner 2 1 8 12 5- 28 Pilot Rock 8 6 3 6 7- 30 T he sev en th g rad e Ponies then made the long trek to W eston to ta k e on the Panthers on Saturday, Dec. 6. The Ponies cam e out flat in the first half, but still managed to be ahead and hold a 12 to 10 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Ponies finally c a m e u n c o rk e d a n d to o k possession o f the lead and held on for the win. Once again the Ponies were short handed and Jason Houweling and Taylor Hodges joined the seventh graders on the roster. The scorers for the Ponies were Dalton Wellman w ith 11 p o in ts , S p e n c e r Palmer with eight, Josh Shank with two, Taylor Hodges with two and Jason Houweling had four points. They will travel to Athena-W eston on Saturday, Dec. 13 for tournam ent play. T h e firs t h a lf w as played with the Ponies taking a 15 to 14 lead as neither team could establish themselves. By the third and fourth quarters the Ponies started to open the game up. The scoring leaders included Lane Bailey with four points, Nacho Elguezabal with two, Andre Rauch with eight, Nathan VanCleave with seven, M att M cC abe w ith 12 and M ichael W ellm an w ith tw o points. Scoring most o f their points in the first and third, the Ponies pulled out a 27 to 18 win. The Ponies jum ped out to an 8 to 3 lead in the first. A f te r in te r m is s io n , th e P o n ie s storm ed out to a nine-point lead, 25 to 14. H ow ever, neither team could do much in th e fo u rth , as th e P o n ie s m anaged only two points.
