Logan Grieb became the lucky owner. A w id e v a rie ty o f beautiful trees were viewed at the Shoe Box, owned by Joyce K ay and Je rry H o llo m an . G uests listened to the Willow C reek Sym phony E nsem ble and e n jo y e d refresh m e n ts catered by Jo h n ’s Place and cookies served by W illow V a lle y S e r v ic e C lu b . A uctioneer K en G rieb ran a lively auction as people vied for their favorite tree. C h r is tm a s is snowmen and Santas. “Merry S n o w m e n ” by M o rro w C o u n ty G r a in G r o w e r s Em ployees w as a blue and silver fiber optic delight, taken home by Larry and Betty Mills a f te r s o m e c o m p e titiv e bidding. “T he Santa T ree,” created by N ancy Gochnauer w ith sponsors C am W ishart and Suzanne Jepsen, w ent hom e w ith B ob and Sharon H a r r is o n . H a r ris o n grandchildren will be enjoying this tree, complete with pointy hat, mittens and elf-like shoes. Families will enjoy Irish luck and some great coloring moments. S o m e a g g r e s s iv e b id d in g o c c u rr e d b e fo re Nancy Snider was able to lay claim to “ Teddy B ears and Jingle Bells,” sponsored by the Bank o f Eastern O regon and decorated by B abette Wall. “ T iny T oys for G irls and Boys,” a gold and silver delight was sponsored by Bucknum’s, created by Rhonda Looney and taken hom e by B ob and Suzanne Jepsen. “Tropical Christmas,” s p o n s o re d by K u h n an d Spicer and created by Ann Spicer, B ecky R ipple and Barb H ayes was one o f the most unique entries, complete with parrots, beach thongs and lanterns. Two additional trees, appealing to a sw eet tooth w ere “ Pepperm int C andy,” s p o n s o re d by W h e a tla n d Insurance and purchased by S h e r id a n T a r n a s k y ; a n d “ C o o k ie s a n d C a n d y ,” s p o n s o r e d by M u r r a y ’s Country Rose and claimed by Rusty and Cyde Estes. T a k in g h o m e th e biggest tree, “Full O ’ Hot Air,” sponsored by Jo h n ’s Place and The Video Store, and the “ Itty Bitty Tree,” sponsored by H e p p n e r H a rd w a re , w as Hughes Ranch. A r c h ie P a d b e rg donated a 7 >4-foot artificial tree and Pat Sw eeny was the highest bidder. The H eppner C h a m b e r o f C o m m e rc e appreciated the support o f one ’ and all who contributed to the success o f the second annual auction. The auction brought in $ 1525. Proceeds enable the Chamber to continue ongoing projects, w hich enhance the c o m m u n ity . W h e a tla n d Insurance also donated a 10 percent match o f the proceeds to the Heppner Neighborhood Center. Town and Country is scheduled for Jan. 15,2004. Elks announce winners in “Youth Biggest Elk” contest T h e H e p p n e r E lks Lodge is pleased to announce they have two w inners in their Elks “ Y outh B iggest E lk” contest. W hitney M atthew s, age 13, took first place with a cow elk ear m easurem ent o f 10 inches. W hitney took her animal with a .243 caliber rifle in M orrow County. Second place went to M ark M cCabe, age 12. M ark’s anim al had a 9'/2-inch ear and w as taken with a .270 caliber rifle in Grant County. C ongratulations to both these young hunters. E lk s c o m m itte e m em bers indicate they will repeat this contest again next Whitney Matthews year, starting in early August, so as to allow young archery h u n ters to particip ate. A ll W illow C reek Valley youth under the age o f 18 are eligible to enter. E n try ’s m ust have been legally taken and tagged by the young hunter. T hree c a te g o rie s e x is t: lo n g e s t branch bull, longest spike bull, and longest ear-cow elk. Mark McCabe Local choirs join forces for lone student selected as the holidays Wendy’s Heiseman finalist T he O reg o n E ast o f Walla Walla has performed Sym phony C horale will join with the Pendleton High School a capella C hoir and the OES C h a m b e r O r c h e s tr a to p e rf o r m th e J .S . B a c h “Christm as Oratorio” at 7:30 p.m. in the Vert Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 13. T h e O r a to r io is a perennial holiday favorite and the performance is open to the community. Ticket prices are $ 12 adult, $ 10 senior, and $5 student and may be purchased at the OES office at 424 S. Main, at Armchair Books, and at the door. Those buying at the door are encouraged to arrive early to insure that they have a seat. T h e O re g o n E a s t C horale, conducted by Ken W oods w ith assistant Randy Thomas, consists o f 60 singers o f all ages from across eastern Oregon. In a d d itio n to his duties as a featured soloist, Steve M uller will conduct the High School a capella choir. Selections from the O ratorio will also be perform ed at the High School choral concert on Monday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pendleton High School Auditorium.
