The Cardinal boys’ team finished second overall, while the girls took third overall, at the Condon Invitational meet held April 19. For the boys’ team, Andrew Rietmann had two first place finishes, winning the 100m dash with a time o f 10.88 and won the 200m dash with a time o f22.68. Rietmann also finished third in the 400m with a time o f 56.23. Mike Radie was close behind with a second place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 11.38. Radie also finished second in the 200m dash with a time o f23.44. Tyler Brown placed fourth in the javelin with a throw o f 133 feet 2 inches. Cayle Krebs finished third in the discus with a throw of 119 feet. Billy Ross placed fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 33 feet 10 inches. The 4x100m relay team o f R adie, N ick C h ristm a n , K rebs and Rietmann finished second with a time o f 45.89. The 1600m relay team of Brown, Ross, Christman and Radie finished fifth with a time of4:00. On the girls’ team, Diana McElligott took away three first place ribbons in the 100m dash with a time o f 12.81; 200m dash with a time of26.49; and in the 400m with a time o f 1:01. A shley G ram s finished first in the 300m hurdles with a time o f 53.86. The 4x100m relay team of Eva Chitty, Grams, Natalie McElligott and Diana McElligott finished second with a time o f 53.69. Mustangs shut-out Tigers By Rick Paullus Good pitching, defense and timely hitting helped the Heppner Mustangs to a 9-0 win over the visiting Stanfield Tigers in Columbia Basin C o n fe re n ce action on T uesday, A pril 22. The Mustangs, 1 -0 in the CBC and 10-3 overall, have a double h ead er at hom e ag ain st Umatilla on Saturday, May 3 and have a non-league game against Riverside at home on Tuesday, May 6, at 4 p.m. After a scoreless first, the Mustangs scored three in the second when Billy Gates doubled, Kory Paullus walked, Josh Gutierrez had an RBI single, Jode Coil singled home Paullus and Gutierrez scored when the ball got by the left fielder. -i.n I... . They added two more in the third when Brad Adams reached on an error, Donald Adams walked, Paullus had an RBI single and got into a rundown to score another run to make it 5-0. In the fourth, Coil reached on an error and came around to score on a Chuy Elguezabal single. They added M ustang b aseb all team recorded their fourth and fifth straight shutouts and their tenth straight win in sweeping the Pilot Rock Rockets 7-0 and 12-0, with the second game being cut short to five innings due to the 10-run rule, on Saturday, A pril 26. The Mustangs, now 3-0 in the CBC and 12-3 overall, will host Umatilla for a double header on Saturday, May 3 at 11 a.m., and face Riverside at home on Tuesday, May 6 at 4 p.m., in a non-league game. The Mustangs scored the only run they needed in the first when Brad Adams hit a two-out double and scored on a Kory Paullus single. They added two more in the fifth when Jode Coil singled, Chuy Elguezabal was hit by a pitch, Adams was intentionally w alked and Paullus singled to score two. The Mustangs added insurance in the seventh as Elguezabal walked and scored on Adams’ double. Paullus reached on a fielder’s choice, Luke Murray was intentionally walked, Paullus scored on a wild pitch, Donald Adams walked and Kyler Lovgren singled to score two more and make it 7-0. Elguezabal went the distance on the mound to pick up the win striking out ten, walking none and scattering four hits. Brad Adams w ent tw o for th re e w ith tw o doubles; Paullus went two for four with three RBI; Lovgren went two for four with two RBI; Coil went two for three; and Elguezabal scored twice. The Mustangs again struck early in the second game as Elguezabal walked, stole second, went to third as Josh Winters struck out and reached on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball. Brad Adams walked, Murray grounded out to move the as Donald Adams reached on an error. They broke out the long ball in the second when Coil hit a homerun to right, Elguezabal singled and Brad Adams made a home run to right-center to make it 7-0. In the th ird , Josh Gutierrez singled, Coil reached on an error, moving Gutierrez to third, who scored when Coil stole second. The Mustangs put the game away in the fifth when Donald Adams walked and went to third on Ben Turrell’s single, Cody Walton running for Turrell went to third on a Gutierrez RBI single, Trevor Rhea grounded out to score Walton, Kiel Naims, Gutierrez scored on a wild pitch and Brad Adam s had an RBI double to make it 12-0. Brad Adams went the distance to pick up the win pitching a one-hitter, striking out five and walking one. Adams helped himself at the plate going two for two with a double and a home run and three RBI. Gutierrez went two for three with an RBI and score twice and Elguezabal scored twice. Cardinal boys take second, girls tie for third Mustang JVs beat Tigers By Rick Paullus T he H eppner JV baseball team built a 10-0 lead after four innings and had to hang on to beat the visiting Stanfield JVs, 10-8, on Friday, A pril 25. The M ustangs improved to 8-2 on the year and will host Pilot Rock on Friday, May 2 at 3 p.m. The Mustangs took an early lead when Cody Walton singled, Kyle Carlson w alked and Kiel N airns brought both home with a double. Casey O ’Neal, Caleb O ’Neal, VanCleave and Lane Bailey participated in the second 4x200m relay and received fourth place. Nacho Elguezabal received sixth in discus at 85 feet 9-V2 inches. Aaron Allstott received fourth in shot put at 34 feet 11 -V* inches. For the girls, Megan Orr received first in discus at 66 feet 11 inches. Orr also received fourth in 100m- 14.38 and fourth in 200m- 31.42. K ylie D oherty, Mahaley Huddleston, Cycle C oil and K elsey W olff received sixth place for the girls in the 4x200m relay. HJHS track team participates in Pilot Rock Invitational Hanson took fourth in 100m The Heppner Jr. High School tra c k team participated in the Pilot Rock Invitational, a five-way meet, April 18. This was their third meet o f the season. Bryson Wood took first and made a new school record in javelin with a throw o f 141 feet 4 inches. Wood also took first in 400m and long jum p and second in the 200m. Nathan VanCleave received first in the 300m hurdles, fourth in the 400m and also participated in shot put. Tony H aguew ood took first in high jump at 5 feet 1 inch. He also placed second in 100m hurdles, third in 100m and fourth in 200m. Lane Bailey, Aaron Allstott, Justin Delveaux and Casey O ’Neal took third in the 4 x100m relay. Jason Houweling, Matt McCabe and C olton H anson took fourth in the second 4x 100m relay. Allstott, Delveaux, Casey O ’N eal and Caleb O ’N eal took first in the 4x200m relay. Individually, Bailey took fifth and Delveaux took fourth in javelin; McCabe took fifth in discus; O ’Neal took third in triple jum p; and hurdles. H o u w elin g took second in both 300m and 800m. Allstott took first in shot put and third in 100m hurdles. Rounding out the boys, Caleb O ’Neal took first in 100m hurdles and second in high jump. In the girls’ division, Kelsey Wolff"took first place in the 400m. Megan Orr took second in shot put, third in discus, fourth in 100m and fifth in 200m. Coil also received fifth in the javelin at 67 feet 5 inches. Huddleston placed fifth in shot put and Doherty placed fourth in 100m hurdles and fifth in high jump. B ryson Wood received first place in all three individual events in which he competed. The individual events included 400m- 58.97 seconds; 200m- 26.15; and long jum p- 15 feet and 7 inches. Tony H aguew ood participated in three individual events. The individual events included second place in the 300m hurdles- 49.74; fourth in 200m- 27.31; and second in high jump- 4 feet and 11 inches. Brendan McElligott participated two individual events and created a new school record. The NSR for the 800m is 2:18.70; Bryan Padberg held the old record at 2:19. McElligott also placed second in the 400m at 59.75. Ju stin D elv eau x participated in one individual event. He received fourth in javelin-114 feet.
