M cCabe was selected as a linebacker and as a running back. M atheny was chosen as a wide receiver and defensive back. Travis Bellamy, also an HHS senior, was named to the second team as an offensive and defensive lineman. Using a 14-0 run. the Mustangs blew the game open in the third, getting 10 points from Stefanic I lanson and four from Tiffany Piper, and took a 36-16 lead going into the fourth. Chantea M acaulay scored three points in the fourth as the Mustangs kept up the pressure and won going away. Hanson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds to lead the Mustangs, with Miller adding nine points and three steals. Bntt finished with eight points; Macaulay had three assists and two steals; Nikki Sisk had four rebounds, two steals and two assists; Shanna Rietmann had three rebounds and two steals; while Madison Bailey had three assists. Middle school, junior high and high schooi students faced their computers and 200 rough questions to vie for top scores based on the accuracy and speed o f their answ ers. A team o f high school students at Heppner High School scored 1089 o f 2.000 possible. A team o f junior high students scored 856 o f 2.000 possible. Academic coach Linda Dutcher described the event as an "outstanding opportunity for students to demonstrate their academic ability while working as a team." Students on the high school teapi included Jonathan Bennett. Shelley Rietmann, Daniel Jepsen, Tyler Henderson, Jesse Gutierrez. Lcland Rill. Marcy Miller. Conor Kilkenny, Julie Proctor. Paula Spicerkuhn. Douglas Orw ick and Shanna Rietmann. Students on the junior high team included Mahaley Huddleston, Brendan McElligott, Krystal Naims, Bnanne Jones. Drew Prindle, Laurie Murray and Roy Proctor. The Know ledge M aster Open was designed to stimulate enthusiasm for learning and recognition for academ ic accomplishment. The contest runs on classroom computers to allow all students the opportunity to compete in a large academic event without the expense o f traveling to a central site. Results o f the contest are tabulated into overall, state, and enrollm ent-size rankings by Academic Hallmarks, a Colorado publishing firm that hosts the event. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Blue Devils and improved the Mustangs' record to 4-1 on the year. The Blue Devils took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, hut a Brett Barber jum per and I.acey Matteson drive and lay-in tied it up. The Blue Devils led a low -scoring first quarter. 6-4. and scored a basket to open the second, but a Rietmann lay-in and a running jumper by Meghan Bailey tied it again at 8-8. The Blue Devils again made a run to lead 11 -8. but a free throw by Tylynn Smith and a lay-in by Shelley Rietmann finished with Shanna Rietmann on a nice pass from Barber tied it again.
