All members are welcome to attend. orne photo by Debbie Radie The lone boys basketball team received second place in district and advanced to the state 1A playoffs in Baker. They also placed within the top 10 schools academically, receiving a Dairy Farmers academic award. By Jeri McElligott lone High School held its winter sports dessert Monday, March 12 at the high school cafeteria. The evening began with volleyball coach Charity McElligott giving her varsity team their awards for placing seventh in the state academically for 1A schools with a 3.75 GPA. Girls'junior varsity coach Ryan Rudolph gave out JV letters. The girls finished with a 12-9 win-loss record. Dana Heideman, girls' varsity coach, presented awards to the players for placing first in the state academically for 1A schools, and third overall, with a team GPA of 3.88. Heideman gave out nine varsity letters. Special awards went to Amellia Peck- Miss Steals and Miss Hustle, Natalie McElligott- Miss Assists, Kristina Powell- Miss Rebounds, Diana McElligott- Miss Defense, and Salli McElligott- Most Improved. C-team boys' coach Jim Swanson introduced his team and summarized the season. Scott Burright, junior varsity boys' coach, gave out pins and special awards to Cayle Krebs- Most Improved Player, Brian Gutierrez- Mr. Hustle, and Mike Radie- M ost. Inspirational and Cardinal Heart. Assistant football coach Dennis . Stefani gave awards to the team for placing second in state at the 1A level academically with a team GPA o f 3.36. Stefani, who is also head basketball coach, recapped the 15-10 season. He announced that Brad Burright was selected to the second team all-state. Names going on the stat board for the 2001 season are: scoring- Brad Burright with 413 points and a 16.5 average; free throw percentage- Adam Neiffer at 66.7 percent; field goal percentage- Brad Burright at 56.3 percent; assists- Korey Morgan with 93; rebounds- Brad Burright with 235 (120 offensive and 115 defensive); blocked shots- Aaron Brown with 56; steals- Brad Burright with 56; and Taking the Charge- Adam Neiffer with 13. Teammates voted Burright Most Valuable Player. Other awards went to Dustin Haguewood- Most Improved, Korey Morgan- Most Inspirational, Cory Bennetto- Mr. Defense, Brooks Rea- Mr. Hustle, and Aaron Brown- Cardinal Heart. Brown also received a section of wall mat signed by his teammates as a reminder o f his broken hand during the season. Rhonda Powell and Charity McElligott were recognized by the coaches for their help and support throughout the season. Special thanks went to McElligott, Loa Heideman, Dave Stevens and Helen Heideman for doing the stats and keeping books, Dean Robinson and Mike Stuart for their support, the fans for cheering, and the community band for playing during games. The boys' team thanked Helen and Butch Heideman for helping pay expenses so they could stay at state after their loss, Marc Orem for helping with the coaching all season, and Dave and Debbie Radie for the embroidered Cardinal neckties. PMH Auxiliary raffle winner announced Lany Lindsay o f Lexington is the winner of the Pioneer Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home microwave raffle. Approximately $500 was earned for needed items for the hospital and nursing home. lone track team competes at Umatilla photo by Debbie Radie Andrew Rietmann, lone High School, took first place in the boys 200 meters at the Umatilla Ice Breaker meet on March 16. Also pictured is Brooks Rea. lone’s track team came out on top in many events at the Umatilla Ice Breaker held Friday, March 16, in Umatilla. Andrew Rietmann took first place in both the short distance running events with 11.93 in the 100 meter dash and 23.79 in the 200 dash. Diana McElligott took first place as well in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with 13.63 and 27.75, respectively. Brad Burright excelled in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.78 and the 300 meter hurdles with a time o f 42.03, capturing first place in each event. Natalie McElligott placed third in the longjump with a jump of 14-9 and second in the high jump at 4.8. lone's 4 x 100 boys' relay team of Kory Morgan, Brooks Rea, Mike Radie and Andrew Rietmann took first place with a time of 46.54. Cory Bennetto took third in the discus with 114-3 distance. Amellia Peck placed second in the 110 meter intermediate hurdles with 18.22 seconds. Half marathon, 5K run slated The third annual McKay Creek "Croak and Choke" half-marathon and 5K run will be held on Saturday, May 5, at 8 a.m. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Umbarger Ranch in Pendleton. To get to the ranch- from Highway 1-84, take Exit 216; turn south on Market Road; go 1/2 mile and turn right on Tutuilla Church Road; go two miles and turn right on Umabarger Road until you reach the end. The intention of the run is to help raise money for local Christian churches. Pledge cards can be acquired at community churches throughout Pendleton. The event is sponsored by Pepsi and local Pendleton churches. "I am excited about the Croak and Choke because it gives another opportunity for all the local churches to come together," said Pastor Rod Harwood, chaplain at St. Anthony Hospital. "The event is open to any individual who enjoys running." Registration and entry fee before April 6 is $15, which includes a T- shirt. Participating church groups using the event as a fund raiser are not required to pay a fee. This scenic run winds along McKay Creek, through the foothills of the Blue Mountains and along Tutuilla Flats. Transportation to the start o f the course will be provided. To obtain an entry form, contact John Hurley at Pendleton First Assembly of God, 276-6417. Historical society to meet The Morrow County Historical Society will meet on Saturday, March 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the Louis Carlsons, 625 So. Chase Street in Heppner. The program will feature Bob Jepsen and Suzanne Jepsen. Suzanne will inform the organization on the progress and status of the Willow Creek Valley Assisted Living Facility. Bob will present information on the Heppner Cemetery, a focus of attention as the year of commemoration of the Heppner Flood nears. The meeting is open to the public.
