FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 6, 2000 Light Parade winners announced Heppner Garden Club shares the ’green stuff* On Comet, On Cupid.. . These reindeer seemed ready to dash away during the Light Parade held in downtown Heppner Friday. Peggy Connor (right), on behalf of the Heppner Garden Club, presents checks to (left to right) Pennie Miller, Mary Goheen, Merry Brannon, Larry Mills and (front) Verna Brinda, all representing various charitable organizations, during the club meeting and Christmas party Monday. The club made $100 donations to the South Morrow County EMT Association, St. Patrick's Senior Center, Heppner DayCare, Pioneer Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Neighborhood Center. By Claudia Hughes As of noon, Monday, Dec. 4, the Light Parade Ballot Box containing 132 votes was counted by two unbiased, honest citizens with an equally honest witness observing the proceedings. Only one number was questionable as to it being a six or a nine. It did not influence the results. There were no chads or dimples. Between 7 p.m. Thursday Nov. 30 and the above mentioned date, the ballot box was locked up so it could neither be stuffed or tampered with. The results: First Place-the Elks Winterwonderland; Second Place-the Lexington Fire Department Auxiliary, complete with Mr. and Mrs. Santa and a mule; Third Place-Pathfinders (covered wagon driven by Joe Yocom); and The Kris Kringle Award-Archie Ball and the Shobe Canyon Kids. Leading the parade was a surprised Bob Kahl, escorted by Dons Brosnan of Twice Upon A Time. Kahl, who has orchestrated parades for around 15 years, was kidnapped from lining up entries and moved to the honored position. He and his family will be missed as they move to Oregon City to be closer to children and grandchildren. Darrel Raver chaired the parade; Tom Sly made sure all was in order for the speaker system, Larry Mills announced; and the city controlled the trees and street lights. Other entries included Columbia Basin Electric, Bank of Eastern Oregon, the St. Patrick's Fair and Rodeo Paddy Wagon, Heppner High School and the Heppner Ranger District. Bringing up the rear was Santa on the fire truck, who hopped off to distribute candy canes as the parade came back down the street and snaked its way up tO' the hospital and nursing home. 4-H News Kool Kitchen Kids Turning greens into flower By Merlyn Robinson In addition, the Heppner power, this year these busy Linsey Mitchell, last year's Not only do evergreens brighten Garden Club gives an annual members also put colorful president, called the meeting of the the holiday season, but the $500 scholarship to a senior flower containers in front of the Kool Kitchen Kids 4-H Club to proceeds also go into community who is enrolling in agriculture St. Patrick's Senior Center and order on Thursday, Nov. 9. or horticulture at college.
