Thirty-five youth group members went door to door on Halloween night, collecting food for the Neighborhood Center. Due to the generous support o f the lone community, two vehicles were used to transport all the donated food to Heppner. On Friday, November 10, 22 lone Youth Group members and four adult leaders traveled to Burnside in Portland to serve the poor. Members who were new to the Burnside experience spent the morning at Outreach Ministry. Outreach has served the poor of the neighborhood for over 18 years. Because of Outreach Ministry many who would otherwise be homeless and hungry, living and sometimes dying on the streets, now have a home, security, independence, dignity and friends. The youth helped the staff at Outreach by sorting and folding clothes and doing general office clean up. Personal care director Jesse Nava took the volunteers to members' apartments for cleaning. The youth learned that many of the homeless have physical and mental disabiluies. Nava was selected as the most lniluential person they met due to his knowledge of the problems of the area and the work he does for the poor. A second group of lone youth served lunch at the Blanchet ¿louse soup kitchen, where approxirrratdr b50-399-hmches ate Serve# "'daily. ’ mtdl tfbftsisted o f a chicken patty, potatoes, com. tossed salad, coffee, punch and bread. Adult leader Glenda Taylor took a group o f lone youth to Loaves and Fishes, located above the Downtown Chapel on Burnside. They delivered lunches to shut-ins and served lunch to senior citizens. Ashley Carmack and Shelby Krebs said they were impressed with the cleanliness of the facilities. The lone youth regrouped for lunch and then walked to the Greenhouse Youth Shelter at Ninth and Oak Street. Because of confidentiality issues the group could not go inside, but Kevin Colbert. Greenhouse youth advocate, spoke to the group about the services they provide and the youth they help. He estimates the homeless youth population in Portland to be around 500. Greenhouse is a program of the Salvation Army and is open 24 hours a day. seven days a week, although they do not provide overnight accommodations.
