lone youth group has activity filled fall
By Jeri McElligott
i
lone Youth Group members
had an activity-tilled fall.
Eight youth participated in the
celebration
and
dedication
ceremony at the lone United
Church of Christ on October 22.
Those members participating
were Allison Halvorsen, Shelby
Krebs. Jeff Hunt, Karl Morgan,
Korey Morgan, Tracy Griffith,
Jeremy Rietmann and Jennifer
Thompson. Salli, Diana and
Natalie
McElligott
babysat
during the service.
Helping with the UCC golf fun
day were Jeff Hunt, John Collin,
Tim Doherty and Billy Gates.
The annual lone food drive was
a huge success. Thirty-five youth
group members went door to
door on Halloween night,
collecting
food
for
the
Neighborhood Center. Due to the
generous support o f the lone
community, two vehicles were
used to transport all the donated
food to Heppner.
On Friday, November 10, 22
lone Youth Group members and
four adult leaders traveled to
Burnside in Portland to serve the
poor. Members who were new to
the Burnside experience spent the
morning at Outreach Ministry.
Outreach has served the poor of
the neighborhood for over 18
years. Because of Outreach
Ministry many who would
otherwise be homeless and
hungry, living and sometimes
dying on the streets, now have a
home, security, independence,
dignity and friends.
The youth helped the staff at
Outreach by sorting and folding
clothes and doing general office
clean up. Personal care director
Jesse Nava took the volunteers to
members'
apartments
for
cleaning. The youth learned that
many of the homeless have
physical and mental disabiluies.
Nava was selected as the most
lniluential person they met due to
his knowledge of the problems of
the area and the work he does for
the poor.
A second group of lone youth
served lunch at the Blanchet
¿louse soup kitchen, where

potatoes, com. tossed salad,
coffee,
punch and bread.
Blanchet now serves three meals
a day to the poor of the area.
Adrienne Swanson, who
handed out forks at the door, said
she enjoyed greeting the people
and telling them to have a nice
day. Cory Bennetto. who was
making his first service trip to
the area, said he found the people
very friendly and easy to work
with.
Adult leader Glenda Taylor
took a group o f lone youth to
Loaves and Fishes, located above
the Downtown Chapel on
Burnside. They delivered lunches
to shut-ins and served lunch to
senior citizens. Ashley Carmack
and Shelby Krebs said they were
impressed with the cleanliness of
the facilities.
The lone youth regrouped for
lunch and then walked to the
Greenhouse Youth Shelter at
Ninth and Oak Street. Because of
confidentiality issues the group
could not go inside, but Kevin
Colbert.
Greenhouse
youth
advocate, spoke to the group
about the services they provide
and the youth they help. He
estimates the homeless youth
population in Portland to be
around 500.
Greenhouse is a program of the
Salvation Army and is open 24
hours a day. seven days a week,
although they do not provide
overnight accommodations. They
do provide hygiene assistance,
counseling, schooling, medical
assistance
and
recreational
opportunities.
