March 15, 22 and 29, 2000 Chamber Chatter By Claudia Hughe«, Chamber Manager Bet there were plenty of exhausted people in County Morrow. What a weekend. I know of at least one person who fell asleep Sunday night and woke up in a bathtub full of cold water feeling much like a shriveled up prune. You all made it happen with the thousands o f hours put into the entire weekend. It's a huge undertaking for a wee community of this size. For many businesses it's the equivalent of three to six Saturdays rolled into one. One business owner said, "I love to work that day, everyone is so relaxed and having such a good time." It was estimated that there were 4,000 people on the street during the parade. And how wonderful to have our own bands marching in the parade. The Luck of the Irish must have been shining down upon the community as the sun peaked through for the parade and the moon came out after another rain. The close to 400 people who experienced The Trail Band were most grateful to the Morrow County Unified Recreation District, the IOOF and the committee for such professional entertainment for free. The group enjoyed Heppner and hopes to return. One of the best things about the Wee Bit O'lreland event is the opportunity for so many entities to bring some dollars to their organizations in a variety of ways. The St. Patrick's Committee will hold a meeting within the next couple of weeks to wrap things up and discuss the logistics and scheduling for next year. They plan to create a board of directors, with each having specific responsibilities of the celebration. This board would meet on a regular basis so the major decisions of the committee would not fall on the shoulders of only a few. New faces and input are so important. Heppner has become known far and wide for the Wee Bit O'lreland celebration. Visitors were on hand from Ireland, British Columbia, California, Washington and Idaho to name a few. Volkswalkers were seen following the shamrocks. People from far and wide experienced Heppner. The phone is quieter at the Chamber of Commerce today. Coming up will be the MS Walkathon, West Horse Sale at the fairgrounds, Easter egg hunt and the flea market, then "Celebrate Heppner," and before we know it the Morrow County Fair and Oregon Trail Pro- Rodeo. Your Chamber is here to help promote area events and we can do this only if we have information about them. Please keep us posted as we send calendars of events and information out on a regular basis. By the way, the new Eastern Oregon Visitor Guides are in with a full Morrow County page. Thought for the week: "I am interested in the future because I will spend the rest of my life there." -C.F.
