Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 15, 1999 - SEVEN lone walks away with win over Tigers lone traveled to Stanfield on Tuesday, December 7.The lone JV girls walked away with a win against the Tigers, defeating Stanfield 31-26. Freshman Tracy Griffith led the Lady Cardinals with six points and dished up one assist. Diana McElligott contributed five points and robbed four balls from the Lady Tigers. Jennifer Thompson also had five points to her credit. Jeanette Brantley had an excellent game, with four points, four steals and five rebounds. Cyndi Heagy was the leading rebounder for the Lady Cardinals with six rebounds. Kristina Powell was also a leading force on the boards for the Cardinal team. The lone squad came out at the beginning of the first quarter and were relentless, letting the Stanfield team score only one point to the Cardinals' nine points, By half time the Cardinals were 26 points ahead of Stanfield. The Tigers came out in the fourth quarter and tried to revive their chances by scoring 13. additional points and holding lone to only four points, but their efforts were five points shy of the Cardinals. The JV boys didn't fare as well as their female team members, lone lost to Stanfield, 41-69. Dustin Haguewood scored 12 points, brought down 10 rebounds and scooped out three assists. Dylan Pettyjohn also scored 12 points while Zak Fabian brought in eight points for the Cardinal effort. lone didn't shoot well from the floor, making only 15 of 49 attempts from the field for 31 percent. The Cardinals also found themselves in foul trouble early in the first half with Dustin Haguewood fouling out in the fourth quarter. In varsity action, both teams came out ahead o f the Tigers. The varsity girls defeated Stanfield 51-39. Senior Nikki McElligott and Camie Burright led the Lady Cardinals with 19 points each. McElligott also had 18 rebounds, seven steals and eight assists. Bum ght brought down six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Allison Halvorsen showed great effort by bringing down four rebounds, robbing two balls and handing out four assists for the Cardinal team. The Lady Cardinals shot 75 percent from the free throw line, making three o f four attempts. A last second launch by sophomore Adam Neiffer put the lone men over the Tigers, 67-65. Stanfield started the first half ahead of the Cardinals with a score of 38-32. lone came out in the third quarter to add 17 points and allowing the Tigers to score 16 points. Two three-point missiles by Mark McElligott in the fourth quarter hit their target. Combined with an additional 12 points, the Cardinals came within one point of Stanfield with just seconds left in the game. Adam Neiffer canned the winning shot, bringing home a Cardinal victory. Coach Dennis Stefani said he was pleased with the way his team performed. Mark McElligott scored 24 points for the Cardinals, brought down five rebounds, blocked two Tiger shots, grabbed four steals and handed out four assists for the Cardinals. Brad Burright stored 21 points, brought down nine rebounds and blocked one shot. David Mansfeld scored eight points, robbed one ball from the Tigers and delivered three assists. Cory Bennetto, a well known force on the boards for the Cardinals, walked away with eight rebounds for a total o f 38 rebounds for the season. Heppner C-team boys clip Eagles By Rick Paullus The Heppner M ustang “C” team boys rallied in the fourth quarter to nip the visiting Spray Eagles, 37-35, on Thursday, Dec. 9, to get their first win of the sea son. They are now 1-2. The Mustangs played well in the first quarter, building a 6-2 lead, but went cold in the second and led only 15-13 at halftime. The Eagles came out hot in the sec ond half, building a six point lead in the fourth before the Mustangs began their comeback. Doug O rw ick hit 4-4 free throws and Jerry Shank scored on Freshman Lacey Matteson had a huge game to lead the Heppner Mustangs girls varsity to an easy 60-27 win over the visiting Echo Cougars on Tuesday, Dec. 7. The win im proved the M ustangs’ record to 3-1 on the year. The Mustangs jumped out to a 24-3 lead after one and led 34-15 at halftime. The Mustangs put the game away in the third, outscoring the Cougars 19-0. I By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang varsity girls basketball team took second place at the Condon Christmas Tournament over the weekend of Dec. 10-11 after losing to Condon, 53-33. The Mustangs stayed with the Blue Devils in the first quarter, trailing only 7-6 after one and were behind 20-14 at halftime. But the Mustangs came out cold in the second half, getting outscored 33- 19, to suffer their second loss of the pre-season. The Mustangs’ record is now 4-2. Casey Ingraham led the Mus tangs with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists. Ashley Ropp had seven points and three steals. Amy Papineau had five points and five rebounds. San Juanita Elguezabal pulled down six re bounds. To get to the championship game, the Mustangs easily de feated the shorthanded Prairie City Panthers, 62-28. The Pan thers, withjust five players, could not keep up with the Mustangs, falling behind 21-8 after one and 32-15 at halftime. The Mustangs and Cardinals were tied at 14-14 at halftime, but lone outscored Heppner by two points in both the third and fourth quarters to get the win. Jesse Gutierrez hit three three- pointers to lead the Mustangs with nine points and grabbed eight re- bounds. Jesse Kempas hit a three- pointer and grabbed seven re bounds. Kelsie Greenup grabbed seven rebounds and Sarah Eckman, Nikki Sisk and Marci Miller each pulled down five re bounds. MCSO received a report of a civil problem concerning a boat the caller wanted to repossess. MCSO received a report of a male subject with a gun who was threatening someone at an Imgon residence. Heppner ambulance received a request for an ambulance at a Heppner residence for an un known problem. MCSO received a report from a Boardm an wom an that the neighbors are stealing her wood. MCSO received a request for a deputy from a Cecil man con cerning a dog in the midst of his sheep. MCSO, Oregon State Police, Arlington, Boardman and Hepp ner ambulances received a report of a male with chest pains. Ar lington requested mutual aid and Boardman did not have a crew. The patient was brought by pri vate vehicle to picked up by the Heppner ambulance and trans V ported to Good Shepherd Commu nity Hospital in Hermiston. MCSO, Boardman and Imgon ambulances received a request for an ambulance for a 60 year old woman who was dizzy and hav ing trouble breathing. Boardman ambulance requested mutual aid and Imgon ambulance responded. The patient was transported from Boardman junction off the Hepp ner ambulance en route to Good Shepherd Community Hospital in Hermiston. Oregon State Police received a report of a man who shot with buckshot a Rottweiler that killed four o f his sheep MCSO received a report of a man who threatened to kill his son and ex-wife in Imgon. The sub ject was believed to have a war rant out for him. He was possibly armed and had a history of being abusive. M CSO relayed a m essage from the Hermiston Police Dept, to deliver a message to a man at an Imgon motel to contact Good Shepherd Community Hospital in Hermiston. MCSO received a request for a deputy from a man concerning picking up his kids. MCSO received a report of tires slashed, a car graffitied and a mailbox smashed in Imgon. Heppner Police Dept, received a report of a large group of teens hanging around the high school at 8:56 p.m. An officer was unable to locate anyone. MCSO, Imgon ambulance re ceived a request to respond to the Imgon Moose Lodge. One patient was transported. Heppner Police Dept, received a report o f suspicious circum stances with someone attempting to take something out of a shed. The subjects were in a newer white car playing music. MCSO deputy arrested Mike Lynch, 41, on a Tn-County Cor rections warrant for Parole Vio lation. MCSO deputy arrested Kyle Donald Hill, 23, for Failure to Pay Fine/Disorderly Conduct. He was lodged at the Umatilla County Jail with $636 fine. Nov. 20: MCSO, Heppner Police Dept., Heppner ambulance received a report of a 40-50 year old man with a 30.06 gunshot to his hand at a camp above Cutsforth Park. He was brought down by private vehicle and was losing a lot of blood. The subject, who said the gun blew up on him, was air lifted out. Heppner Police Dept, received a 911 call from a Heppner resi dence. An officer found a verbal domestic dispute in progress. The male half of the dispute told the HPD officer to leave and he did with no action taken. MCSO received a report of a threatening phone call in Irrigon. Boardman Police Dept, re ceived a report of possible child abuse in Boardman. It was deter mined to be a verbal dispute only. MCSO received a report o f a dog secured in a black vehicle for a week in Imgon. MCSO received a report of a man lying off Highway 730 across from the school in Imgon. An of ficer was unable to locate anyone. MCSO received a report of a derogatory message with a lot of cursing left on a phone message. The person reporting the incident has caller ID. MCSO, Boardm an Police Dept, received a report of a black lab shot with a BB gun. Heppner Police Dept., Hepp ner ambulance received a request for an ambulance for a woman with a heart problem. The patient was transported to Pioneer Me morial Hospital in Heppner. MCSO, Heppner Police Dept, received a report from a female subject that she brought a male subject who had injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident to Pio neer Memorial Hospital in Hepp ner The patient, who had internal injuries, was transported to St. .Anthony’s Hospital in Pendleton. MCSO received a report of a two-vehicle accident in Imgon. It was a non-injury accident. MCSO received a request to contact a female subject. Boardman Police Dept, ar rested Charles William Davis, 41, on an Imgon Justice Court war rant. He posted bail of $600.
