FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 3, 1999 Girls' 'C' team finishes season 13 and 0 Alumni Association helps student athletes Dana Reid, representing the Heppner High School Alumni Association, presented a check for $250 each to Shelly Rietmann and Casey Ingraham, to go toward summer basketball programs. Shelley, the 15-year-old daughter of Mark and Tami Rietmann, was selected tor the NBC Camps Girls Junior Tour to the United Kingdom the last week in July and first two weeks in August. She was selected on "athletic ability, personal character and moral excellence," said an NBC news release. Over 700 athletes tried out for the tours. Shelley is a freshman at Heppner High School. Casey, the 17-year old daughter of Sally and Mark Brosnan and Mike and Wendy Ingraham, will play in the Hoop Smart USA Annual Hawaii Classics Tournament at Honolulu Dana Reid, Shelley Rietmann and Casey Ingraham for 13 days in July. She was nominated by Juan Elguezabal, her basketball coach at Heppner High School, and selected by a committee to attend the tournament. She is a junior at HHS. The Heppner High School girls' basketball "C" team has completed their season with a 13 win - 0 loss record. Led by first-year coach, HHS math teacher, Keelie Keown, the 'C' team's schedule included teams from lone, Weston- McEwen, Pendleton, Pilot Rock, Condon and Echo. Coach Keown commented that the team played "with a lot of heart'" and had several closely matched games. Mustang girls clip Eagles to clinch tourney spot By Rick Paullus Using great defense and clutch shooting, the Heppner Mustang girls’ basketball team clinched a spot in the state 2A basketball tournam ent by beating the Wahtonka Eagles, 32-23, at the Columbia Basin Conference Dis trict Tournament on Feb. 25. The M ustangs later played the Sherman County Huskies in a seeding game on Friday, Feb. 26. Casey Ingraham and Jill Bar ber got the Mustangs going, each scoring four points to make it an 8-4 game. Brooke Boyer got a stqal and lay-in, and hit one of two free throws to give the Mustangs an 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kathleen Greenup hit one of two free throws to make it 12-5, then Ingraham scored on a nice pass from Barber plus hit one of two free throws to make it 15-7. After an Eagle free throw, Bar ber hit a three-pointer to make it 18-8. An Eagle basket made it an 18-10 Mustang lead at halftime. The Eagles scored four straight to cut the lead to 18-14 before Ingraham scored to make it 20- 14. The Eagles came right back to score two quick baskets to close within 20-18, before Jaci Hughes scored and Boyer hit another free throw to make it 23-18. Barber then hit a jumper and a running off-balance jumper to stretch the lead to 27-18. A late Eagle bas ket cut the Mustang lead to 27-20 at the end of the third quarter. A free throw by the Eagles made it 27-21 before Kim Pointer hit one of two free throws to make it 28-21. An Eagle basket cut the lead to 28-23, but Amy Papineau scored on a nice pass from Bar ber to give the Mustangs a 30-23 lead. Hughes hit two free throws with 3.2 seconds left to make the final score, 32-23. The Mustangs were led by Ingraham with 11 points, eight re bounds and three steals. Barber had nine points, three rebounds and two assists. Hughes had four points and two assists. Boyer had four points, while Papineau grabbed four rebounds. The Lady Cardinals defeated the Wheeler Falcons in their final game of the season, 62-39. Nikki McElligott was the lead scorer with 21 points with Niki Sullivan scoring 14 points for the Cardinal team. lone’s big quarter was the second when 'the Cardinals scored 28 points to Fossil's 12. The meeting location has been changed from the Heppner High School Library to the Forest Service Conference room. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m and the topic of discussion will be the establishment of goals. The JVs got out to a big lead against Weston-McEwen on Friday, Feb. 19, and coasted to a 56-44 win. On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Mustangs played a good game to beat the Stanfield Tigers, 61- 54. The Mustangs led 14-12 after one but exploded for 23 points in the second to take a 37-18 half time lead. They increased the lead to 50-28 after three and held on for the 12 point win. Michael McCabe hit four three- pointers to lead the Mustangs with 20 points. Stefan Matheny was also in double figures with 11 points. The Mustangs used good defense in the second quarter to increase their lead to 31 -20 at halftime. McCabe scored seven points, including a three-pointer in the third as the Mustangs increased their lead to 46-33 after three quarters. The Mustangs then held on to take the 61-54 win. The Mustangs were led by McCabe and Papineau with 16 points each. M atheny and Knowles each added eight points for Heppner. But not to worry, there's still time for you to get entered. Parade categories include Irish floats, characters, groups, musical groups, cars, bikes and more. If it's "Irish", there’s a place in the parade. Ribbons and cash prizes are awarded for the lucky winners in each category. The parade will take place Saturday, March 13, at 1 pm on Mam Street starting at Green Feed Store and going nearly to Court Street Market.
