VOL. 118______ NO. 8_______ 10 Pages Wednesday, February 24,1999 Time to think about parade entries It's time to start thinking about your entry for the great Heppner St. Patrick's Day Parade. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded for the top entries in each parade entry category and there are many to chose from. The parade committee is looking for Irish floats, characters, groups, musical groups, cars, bikes, golf carts, and more. "Really, the chances look very good that if it's at all "Irish", there's a place in the parade," said chairman Bob Kahl. The St. Patrick's Day Parade will be Saturday, March 13, beginning at 1 p.m., right after the races. Volunteers sought for Little League Anyone interested in coaching, being an umpire or wishing to volunteer in any other way for the Heppner Little League kids season should come to sign-ups on Wednesday and Thursday, March 3 and 4, from 5-7 pm at the Neighborhood Center for an application. Anyone who cannot attend March 3 or 4 may attend the meeting of the Heppner Little League Board Monday, March 8, at 7 p.m. at the Neighborhood Center. The board will select managers and coaches that evening. "Remember, you must fill out a new volunteer form every year to be considered," said a Little League representative. lone Library has free Internet access The lone Public Library now has free Internet access available for use by the general public. The terminal is currently available from 2-4 p.m. and by appointment. The computer is available on a first-come, first- served basis and is also available for word processing and other computing functions. Orientations for new users are available upon request. For more information, contact Anne Morter at 422-7429. Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon Americanism posters now on display Americanism Contest Posters are now on display at the Elks Lodge. This year 26 students participated-13 from Chris Davis' eighth _ grade social studies class at lone Middle School and 13 from Greg Grant's eighth grade class at Heppner. Contest participants from Heppner are: Brad Adams, Donald Adams, Tracey Baker, Sally Calvert, Cindy Gall, Megan Healy, Sibbea Jones, Jessica Krieger, Marcy Miller, Jerry Shank, Whitney Sherrett, Ashley Ward, Josh Winters; lone Middle School-Jaysi Bennetto, Tracy Griffith, Cody Grubaugh (Bergstrom), Cameron Krebs, Cayle Krebs, Diana McElligott, Karl Morgan, Caitlin Orem, Michael Radie, Koby Rea, Andrew Rietmann, Jeremy Tullis and Aaron Tworek. The contest provides students an opportunity to depict his/her view of the nation's history, the meaning of the flag and their personal vision for the future, said an Elks news release. Contest winners, two from each school, will be awarded US savings bonds by the Heppner Elks Lodge. The posters will remain on display at the Elks Lodge through March 10. Local band to play in talent show Yaw's sponsors contest for a trip A rock band comprised of local teens, called "Final Warning", will compete at the Kiwanis talent show on Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m. at the Vert Auditorium in Pendleton. Band members are David Bates, Jeff Currin, Travis Bellamy and Meghan Bailey. Contestants will compete for a $500 prize. Community pep rally planned A community pep rally for the Heppner High School Mustang girls’ and boys' varsity teams, who will play in the district tournament Thursday, Feb. 25, will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the HHS gym. Call Hepp ner City Hall at 676-9618 for res ervations. lone Youth Group traveled to Portland February 16 for a one- day service trip to Burnside. The group started out at Blanchet House, which provides lunch to 200-300 people of the area every day. The youth were delegated different tasks, including handing out pastries, spoons and milk, serving salad, bread and coffee, and bussing tables. The senior citizens were fed a more balanced meal first, with trays of meat, vegetables and salad. They were also given donated packaged products to take with them. Once the seniors were finished, the tables were cleaned and the others were fed. They were handed a donated pastry, a spoon and milk at the door, and were told where to sit. Servers poured water and coffee and served a green salad and bean soup. Day-old bread was also available. They were allowed to eat as much as they wanted and many brought containers to take food with them. When everyone in line was served, the lone group helped clean up and unloaded food from the van that picked up donations that morning. The Blanchet cooks then served a turkey dinner to the kitchen staff. Outreach Ministry of Burnside was the next stop for the group. They once again divided up and did filing, helped fill out government forms, washed curtains, sorted clothing, made sandwiches and cleaned an apartment. Outreach Ministry acts as family for the street people who can not care for themselves, finding them apartments, managing their daily affairs and celebrating holidays. The lone group met one of the Outreach family members, Stuart. He is 36 years old and has cerebral palsy. It was his birthday and the Outreach staff had arranged for him to take the bus to visit his family who lives in the Portland area. Besides his physical handicap, Stuart has a poor short-term memory. He enjoyed telling the lone youth riddles and talking about birthdays. Three members of the lone group cleaned Stuart's apartment. The Outreach staff took the lone youth on a tour of the area apartments. "I enjoyed talking with the people and being around people who have a different way of life," commented Nikki McElligott. "It was all great." Traveling to Portland from lone were adult leaders Duane Neiffer, Paul Clay and Jen McElligott, and youth group members, Niki Sullivan, Mark McElligott, Jacob Neiffer. Nikki McElligott, Allison Halvorsen, Jeremy Reitmann, Jeremiah McElligott, Adam Neiffer, Brad Bumght and Salli McElligott. Street sweeping Heppner's Main Street will be swept on Wednesday, March 3. The "Graywin" Yaw's Restaurant in Heppner is sponsoring a contest for a cruise through the San Juan Island on the classic 50-foot motor vessel, the "Graywin". The first place winner will receive a three-day, two-night cruise for two, including all lodging and meals. Second place winner will receive a gift certificate to Yaw's. Contest details are available at Yaw's Restaurant & Lounge in Heppner. The contest will run from March 1-April 30, with the winner announced May 1. The prize must be used before June 1,1999, or between October and November, 1999. Entrants must be 21 or over. People may enter the contest as many times as they wish. The winner will be announced m the Gazette-Times and will also be contacted by phone. Man cut with knife Marion Taylor, III, 39, was arrested by the Heppner Police on charges of assault in connection with a fight on Feb. 21 that left one man with a knife wound on his face. The victim was transported to Pioneer Memorial Hospital. In a separate incident on Feb. 20, a man came to the Pioneer Memorial Hospital with a shotgun wound to the cheek. According to the Morrow County Sheriffs Office, the incident occurred at the TKO Pheasant Ranch. No additional information on either incident was available at press time.
