FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 28, 1998 Walden supported by farm groups To the Editor: As someone who makes a living oft the land, my most important criteria for voting for a candidate is how they stand on issues related to natural resources. When I heard that Greg Walden, who is running to replace Congressman Bob Smith, was being supported by farm groups, prominent Your vote important, no on 64 ranchers, and many in the timber industry, I knew he was someone I could support. The fact that he has the seal of approval from the Oregon Farm Bureau, the Oregon Forest Industries Council and AG-PAC tells me something. He has my vote for Congress. (s) Jim Duff Athena Don't put our sons and daughters in jail To the Editor: Soon Oregonians will be asked to vote on two separate marijuana-related issues. Measure 57 asks whether the possession be of less than an ounce should be recnminalized with the possibility of imprisonment and forfeiture of one's car and home, while 67 asks whether it should be recognized legally as medicine. The pro-recriminalization side says marijuana is a dangerous gateway to heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine addiction. The truth is 99 percent of all addicts start out trying alcohol and/or tobacco first before moving on to harder drugs. The American Medical Association advocates the use of marijuana as a relatively safe alternative medicine with fewer side effects than aspirin. One hundred thousand Americans die annually from adverse reactions to prescription drugs. Other medications are expensive, addictive and ineffective. Marijuana simply makes people Vote yes Rec. Dist. To the Editor: As student body president of Heppner High School I am writing in support of the Mor row County Unified Recreation District. As a student at Heppner schools for the past eight years, I have been fortunate to be a participant in activities programs. These have taught me invaluable life skills such as responsibility, dedication, cooperation, commitment and the power of positive thinking. These are just a few of the many attitudes and values that activities enable students to develop. I feel fortunate to have had these opportunities and want To the Editor: Having recently read Farm Bureau News (Oct.), I found a timely piece to pass on. Soon it will be time to elect officials and decide ballot measures with your vote. According to the article, there is more at stake this election. "Under the Oregon Constitution, our gubernatorial election turnout sets the minimum number of signatures required to get initiative petitions on the ballot for the next four years." "That means if the predicted low voter turnout comes to pass, the number of signatures required to get statutory and trying to cope with excruciatingly painful conditions feel better. No one can afford either of these Greg Walden, a well rounded candidate To the Editor: As a business owner and former administrator to Congressman Bob Smith for 12 years, I think it is important that our next congressman be someone who has experience in the real world of both business and life. Someone who not only knows what it's like to meet a payroll, but who also knows what it's like to rearrange a schedule to attend a parent- teacher conference. Candidates like that are hard to find. But not this year. Former State Senator Greg Walden, who is running for Congress, is a successful small business owner, a devoted father and husband and a person who has given a significant amount of time to his community and church. We couldn't ask for someone with a more well-rounded background. Vote for Walden on Nov. 3. (s) Leigh Johnson Medford A1 Meunier, superintendent, Pendleton School Eiistrict #16-R.
