In a day of firsts, the Ipne flock, with coach Kelley Swarat at the helm, flew into town for their first experience with the Washington shot clock and their first meeting with the Touchet Indians. lone won, 62- 34. Nikki McElligott put the open ing tip into Camie B urnght’s hands and the Cards were down the floor for their first attack from the paint. There was a turnover and the pace slowed as lone didn’t swing very' quickly. Kara Miller was fouled and put the first score on the board with a free throw. Burright and McElligott hit the offensive boards hard and Touchet turnovers turned into Cardinal points, putting the visi tors from Oregon up 17-7 at the end of the first quarter. Coach Swarat changed the C ards’ lineup, moving Sybil Krebs and Brandi Brantley into position to continue the pressure on Touchet. The Indians put themselves into foul trouble early in the second quarter, which gave lone many trips to the charity line where the team shot a much im proved 53 percent from the line for the night. Working their fast break offense, lone left the floor at the half in the lead, 36-11. The Cardinals came back for the second half running unpre- dictably. Finally, with 6:30 left on the clock in the third. Miller put up two points and Niki Sullivan added two more from underneath. Charissa Gates, Shelby Krebs, Brantley and Allison Halvorsen took over for the Lady Cardinals and increased the score to 52-23 when the buzzer ended the third quarter of play. The assault con tinued through the fourth quarter and the Lady Cardinals finished with another win, 62-34. Statistics: lone (6 2 )-C . Burright 7 1-2 15, McElligott 5 3-4 13. Blue Devils hand 48-40 loss to Mustang girls By Molly Rhea The Condon Blue Devils once again proved too much for the Mustang varsity girls, as they handed out a 40-48 point loss at Condon on Tuesday, January 6. The Blue Devils controlled the tip and the first quarter, whirling to a 16-8 lead in the first eight minutes. Condon's 6T" Molly Durfey and 6' Margaret Schott teamed up to score 10 of the Blue Devils' first 16, while Heppner's Mindy Binschus played strong, sconng six of her eventual 12 points in that first quarter. The Mustangs worked hard to outscore the Blue Devils in the second quarter. With only six seconds remaining in the half and the Mustangs behind 21-28, Lexi Matteson grabbed a Blue Devil rebound, slung the ball down the court to Petra Elguezabal who passed it to Mindy Binschus to score two at the buzzer. The Mustangs trotted into the locker room for the halftime break trailing 23-28. The Blue Devils again took control of the game in the third quarter, leading by as much as 12 points, and finished the stanza with a 10 point, 41-31, lead. The Mustangs again made a run on the lead in the fourth and, with less than a minute remaining, had narrowed the margin to five, 40-45, when they were forced to foul in the attempt to gain possession. Although Condon was able to sink only one of their attempted six freethrows, they managed to add another field goal to cap the win, 48-40. Condon's Schott and Durfey finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Blue Devils. Binschus led the Mustangs with 12 points; Janelle Healy and Petra Elguezabal each scored six. Elguezabal led Heppner's rebounding with seven boards and three assists. Lexi Matteson dished out three assists and blocked two shots. With this loss Heppner ended preseason play at 6-4 and headed into league play with a tough opening weekend. Kara Miller started the second quarter with a three-point shot for the C ardinals, but Dufur outscored the home team and cut their lead to one, 19-18, at half time. The Rangers had possession in the opening of the third quar ter and briefly took the lead by one, with Heather Duncan’s two from outside the key. C. Burright came back down the floor and put in two points for lone Teammate Niki Sullivan added two more and the Lady Cardinals picked up their momentum, finishing out the third period of play, 33-26, against the inside threat from By Kara Miller Tuesday, Jan. 6, the Big Sky East Division Dufur Rangers vis ited lone for a non-counting en counter. The Lady Cards won the game, 42-28. The Cards controlled the open ing tip-off and that told the out come of the game. Camie Bum- ght put the first two points in for lone, while the Rangers’ Ander son answered with two from short range. The Cardinal offense, sparked by C. Burright, Nikki McElligott and Brenda Burright, got lone out in front 14-4. The fourth quarter gave lone’s reserves some playing time as coach Heideman worked the younger girls onto the floor. The lead never fluctuated as lone con tinued their half-court pressure defense and their high percentage shooting from the floor. Viking fouls sent lone to the line where they shot 47 percent for the night. The Lady Cards smoothly ironed out a win, 61-34. Opening the fourth quarter, Dufur had a turnover to give lone’s front line a chance to put some more points on their side of the board. lone called a time-out two minutes into play to change some strategies. Total fouls 9, fouled out -none Heppner girls JV overtaken by Condon By Molly Rhea The junior varsity Mustang girls jumped out to a big lead against the Condon JVs on Tuesday, January 6, only to be overtaken and lose the game, 33- 36, Heppner led 10-0 before allowing the Blue Devils on the board and finished the first quarter ahead 14-3. Condon stepped up their play and put in 10 points in the second period, while allowing the Mustangs to score only three. The Mustangs still had the edge, 17-13, going into the half. è ♦ Saturday, Jan. 10, the lone Lady Cardinals hosted the Uma tilla Vikings and beat the Vikings, 61-36. When the two teams met in late December, lone had been the con trolling force throughout three quarters of the game and the situ ation didn’t change in this meet ing. The Cards came out strong with the opening tip from Nikki McElligott to Kara Miller for two points. The Vikings’ Zenia Leyva answered with a three-point swisher to give the visitors a one point lead, which increased to five through the first quarter. Neena Kik was the V ikings’ main weapon as she made seven of their 11 first quarter points. Niki Sullivan started the sec ond quarter with a steal for the Cardinals, which culminated in two points by Brenda Burright. The Cards began to attack with more success and pulled ahead at the half, 24-17, helped by McElligott’s nine points and five from Camie Burright, while Umatilla only added six to their score. The Burright sisters opened up the second half with a couple of baskets. Changing their defense around to get experience gave the Lady Cards leverage as they found more steals and transition opportunities. At the end of three, lone extended their lead to 49-27. The fourth quarter saw the score tied at 25, 27 and 31 before the Blue Devils gained their biggest lead of 36-31. The young Mustangs came back within three points, and after gaining possession with only 14 seconds remaining, attempted to extend the game with a trey. The Blue Devils swarmed the perimeter as the three-point attempts just missed their mark, with a final score of 33-36, in favor of the Blue Devils. Condon's Christi Reed and Rondi McCall shared high point honors with eight points each. Jessica Maben led the losing effort with six points. Amy Papineau led the Mustang rebounding with nine boards, while Ashley Ropp dished out four assists. Heppner 14 3 8 8 - 33 Condon 3 10 10 13 - 36 The Mustang varsity girls were unable to shake the Tiger-Scots on Friday, January 9, losing 41- 45 at Athena. With 15 Weston- McEwen points coming from behind the ffeethrow line, compared to only six for the Mustangs, The Tiger-Scots won this game from behind the chanty stnpe. The Mustangs jumped out to a 8-2 point lead in the first quarter but then Weston-McEwen's Misty Krey poured in six of her 12 point total to finish the first period Mustangs, 11, Tiger- Scots, 8. The second quarter Heppner played like the North Wind, scoring only six points and giving up the lead to finish the Heppner Varsity girls defeat Sherman Co. Huskies By Molly Rhea The varsity Mustang girls pulled out a close one Saturday, January 10, defeating Sherman County 51 -47 to even both teams' league record at 1 -1. In this evenly-played match the Mustangs enjoyed at least a slight lead for most of the contest. Heppner led 14-12 after one quarter as Petra Elguezabal put in seven of her eventual 13 points. With Lexi Matteson sinking six of her 10 in the second quarter, the Mustangs had a 27-23 lead at the half. Although the third quarter remained close, the Mustangs maintained the advantage and led 37-34 at the end of three. HHS C-team loses to the Rockets By Merilee McDowell Missed shots plagued the Mus tangs C-team girls Monday, Jan. 5, causing a 38-26 loss to the Pi lot Rock Rockets. The Mustangs were outscored 13-5 heading into the second quarter and could never catch up with the Rockets from then on. Mindy Smith had a team-high 10 points to go with her six re bounds. Marissa McCabe scored eight points and grabbed six re- half trailing, 17-20. Petra Elguezabal each scooped Mindy Binschus scored six of 10 rebounds. Annie Hisler had her 11 points in the third quarter four assists. and the Mustangs tied the score Bethany Hansell and Amber at 29 after three. The Mustangs’ game against lone on Jan. 12 was cancelled due to the weather. Heppner's next game will be at Echo on Satur day, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. against Con don.
