Blue Devils hand 48-40 loss to Mustang girls
By Molly Rhea
The Condon Blue Devils once
again proved too much for the
Mustang varsity girls, as they
handed out a 40-48 point loss at
Condon on Tuesday, January 6.
The Blue Devils controlled the
tip and the first quarter, whirling
to a 16-8 lead in the first eight
minutes. Condon's 6T" Molly
Durfey and 6' Margaret Schott
teamed up to score 10 of the Blue
Devils' first 16, while Heppner's
Mindy Binschus played strong,
sconng six of her eventual 12
points in that first quarter.
The Mustangs worked hard to
outscore the Blue Devils in the
second quarter. With only six
seconds remaining in the half and
the Mustangs behind 21-28, Lexi
Matteson grabbed a Blue Devil
rebound, slung the ball down the
court to Petra Elguezabal who
passed it to Mindy Binschus to
score two at the buzzer. The
Mustangs trotted into the locker
room for the halftime break
trailing 23-28.
The Blue Devils again took
control of the game in the third
quarter, leading by as much as 12
points, and finished the stanza
with a 10 point, 41-31, lead.
The Mustangs again made a run
on the lead in the fourth and,
with less than a minute
remaining, had narrowed the
margin to five, 40-45, when they
were forced to foul in the
attempt to gain possession.
Although Condon was able to
sink only one of their attempted
six freethrows, they managed to
add another field goal to cap the
win, 48-40.
Condon's Schott and Durfey
finished with 14 and 12 points,
respectively, to lead the Blue
Devils.
Binschus led the Mustangs with
12 points; Janelle Healy and
Petra Elguezabal each scored six.
Elguezabal

Heppner's
rebounding with seven boards
and three assists. Lexi Matteson
dished out three assists and
blocked two shots.
With this loss Heppner ended
preseason play at 6-4 and headed
into league play with a tough
opening weekend.
Kara Miller started the second
quarter with a three-point shot for
the C ardinals, but Dufur
outscored the home team and cut
their lead to one, 19-18, at half
time. The Rangers had possession
in the opening of the third quar

one, with Heather Duncan’s two
