Workshop slated 1 10,1997 Mustangs shut down Prospectors, 20-0 Sourdough workshop to be held V t* H * y. ♦ * photo by Joyce Hughes Since pioneer days, sourdough has been a Western staple. The tangy flavor has delighted generations in breads, pancakes, and other baked goods. The Morrow and Umatilla Family community Education (FCE) program will offer a free sourdough cookery workshop to members and the general public, Wednesday, September 24, at the Athena Catholic Church Hall. The workshop will begin promptly at 10 a.m. According to Carol Michael, Morrow/Umatilla Extension Agent, FCE members in the Columbia Basin studied sourdough cookery in the late 1960s. The techniques and recipes shared at the early workshop have been used, adapted, revised, and weli traveled in the past 30 years. In the course of travel, some of the recipes have lost their connection to the name of the originator. Long term Umatilla County Extension study group members Jenny Zerba, Jeanne Megy and Doreen Munck compared their original recipes with younger versions found in Oregon Wheat Commission materials, and Extension study group lesson materials from various Oregon counties. "No matter how widely the recipes had traveled, the fact is they consistently produce a successful product," says Michael. Six of the recipes will be shared and demonstrated at the workshop. About 20 additional "Heritage Sourdough Recipes" will be available for a small charge to cover the cost of reproduction. Derek Gunderson is off and running against Grant Union.
