Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner Oregon Wednesday, April 30,1997 - FIVE IHS to present comedy May 3-4 Garden Club holds plant exchange Cast of "Here Come the Brides", lone Drama Club play May 3-4 "When a man marries, his troubles begin" is the topic of the lone Drama club presentation set Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the lone High School cafeteria. The play, "Here come the Brides", is an entertaining three-act comedy by William D. Fisher, set in a cozy living room. In the play, a young bachelor by the name of Jimmy Took (Ryan Bennetto) needs a wife in a hurry when his rich Uncle Dan (Nathan Rietmann) makes a surprise visit to meet Jimmy's non existent wife. Helping Jimmy pull off his scheme is his roommate Bill (Jerimiah McElligott) and Bill’s Aunt Ellen (Kate Garrett). Everything turns sour though, when Jimmy can't find someone to play his bride, so Bill has to take the role. That's when the confusion begins. Strong supporting characters make up the rest of the cast including: Corey Bennetto, Nova Rietmann, Niki Sullivan, Suzy Heideman, Dawn Sheirbon, Erin Crowell, and Kemmery Burright. The play is directed by Jim Raible, assisted by Kara Miller, Katie Tworek and Jessica Krebs. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students and senior citizens. Children will be admitted free. Refreshments will be served at intermission. Cowboy poet to perform May 9 Cowboy poet John "Jay" Kulm will perform at the St. Patrick's Senior Center in Heppner on Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. The performance, which will feature cowboy poetry, humor, tradition, introspection and a banjo, is presented by the Morrow County Arts Council and the Morrow County Museum. The event is funded by the Morrow County Unified Recreation District. Everyone is invited to attend. Admission is free. This is the fifth year for the free plant exchange, which is open to the public. Master Gardener Gail Hughes was in attendance, along with Garden Club members, to answer questions. lone Lions plan Italian dinner The lone Lions Club is sponsoring an Italian dinner at Beecher's Cafe in lone on Monday May 5. There will be two dinner seatings available-at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The dinner menu includes lasagna, spaghetti or manicotti, garlic bread, salad spumom ice cream, coffee or soft drink and a complimentary glass of wine for adults. Tickets are available at Beecher's Cafe, Wheatland Insurance, lone and Heppner branches of the Bank of Eastern Oregon or from any lone Lion's Club member. Proceeds will go toward lone Lion's Club scholarships. This is the third year that the club has sponsored the dinner, w hich has been very successful, says lone Lion Jim Swanson. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Preschoolers will be admitted free of charge. Reservations will be by advance ticket sales. The Bob Schiller Memorial Sheep Dog Trial will be held Friday, May 2-Sunday, May 4, at the Vey Ranches at Echo. Friday will be novice only. Saturday and Sunday will be open, nursery and pro-novice. All entries are full. Salwyn Jones of North Wales, will be the judge. The trial is sanctioned by OSDS and USBCIHA. The trial course is international style. Everyone is invited to attend. Directions to the Vey Ranches from Heppner, Lexington or lone are a follows: go on Highway 207 tow ard Hermiston, turn right at Buttercreek Junction, follow the dog signs. For more information, call 541-376-8188. Kindergarten visits planned Kindergarten visitation will be held at Heppner Elementary School on Friday, May 9. from 8 a m. to noon. The visitation is for children who will be attending kindergarten this tall. Children must be five years old by Sept. 1. Those planning to attend are asked to call Heppner Elementary School, 676-9128. for an appointment and bring a birth certificate and immunization record to the visitation. Heppner came out in the first inning hitting the ball well, but the Tigerscots caught up with back-to-back homeruns. At the end of the first inning the score was 3-1 in favor of the Tigerscots. Starting pitcher Eric Schonbachler was replaced by reliever Josh Coiner for Heppner, in the first inning. A few defensive errors on Heppners part kept them out of the game. The Tigerscots kept hitting the ball, and Heppner stranded runners on base almost every inning. In the sixth inning Heppner switched pitchers again, putting Tim Dickenson on the mound replacing Coiner. Iim did not give up any runs to Weston McEwen in the bottom of the sixth inning. The only Heppner hit in the top of the seventh inning was by right fielder, Lonnie Rill. Cody Bellamy, pinch running for Rill, was thrown out, stealing a base for the first out. Dylan Pettyjohn struck out to give Weston McEwen two outs. Shane Matheny was thrown out on a ground ball to third base to end the game. Heppner plays Stanfield, April 26, in Heppner.
