By Deipha Jones Lexington Odd Fellow Lodge and the Rebekah Lodge have been busy this week visiting neighboring lodges to assist the D.D.D.M. with his installation. Tuesday, Lyle and Virginia Peck, Clarence Buchanan, Cecil and Deipha Jones, and Wilbur and Dorothy Jackson visited in Hermiston where the men were installed in their offices and the ladies attended the meeting. The guest for evening was a former Past Assembly Presi dent, Pat Horton. Later, her husband, the Grand Master of Oregon, visited and gave an in teresting talk of the work of the Odd Fellows and their various projects, such as the Eye Bank. A chair for research is financ ed by the Odd Fellows and Re bekah Lodges at the John Hop kins eye research center, the Living Legacy (replacement planting of trees), the arthritis fund and many local projects. He will speak after the 11 a.m. worship ser vice. Care Trust provides develop ment and advisory services to churches and community or ganizational sponsors of resi dential housing for the elderly, said the Reverend Stan Hoob- ing, pastor at Hope. The Holly ladies entertained with an Easter hat show. Some of the hats were fancy, some were fishing hats that had been remodeled and others were fun hats, such as a Minnie Pearl hat. The Grand Master and his wife were the judges, with the following prizes-prettiest, Dorothy Jackson, the most fun hat, JDelpha Jones, and most original, Luella Taylor. Elks Club in Hermiston. Care Trust's client base reflects its strong focus in serving non-profit sponsors, said the Reverend Floobing. The firm is based in Oregon and maintains a presence in Florida. It is a member of the Oregon Health Care Associa tion, the Oregon Association of Homes for the Aging and Alz heimer's Association. The Reverend Hoobing be came aware of this organization through Annetta Strixrud, Ore gon Synod Parish nurse direc tor, who had been to Heppner as part of the health fair spon sored by St. Patrick's seniors in 1993. Alt individuals and grtiups who are interested in housing for the elderly are invited to hear Meyer and learn how they can be of assistance to the el derly in south Morrow County. _____ The R & W Reading Program, sponsored by Alex and Patty Rystedt and Scott and Carol Hollis of the R & W Drive In of Heppner, recently concluded its 10th year at Heppner Ele mentary School (HES). The program was started by past owners Tom and Helen Riehl as a way to encourage the development of recreational reading habits and was con tinued by the R & W's new owners. Goals are established by the teachers responsible for reading instruction in the classroom and vary depending on the age and the reading ability of each child. Participa tion in the program is the child's choice, but students who reach the goals are re warded with ice cream treats at the Drive In. Students are challenged to read frequently, to read gradually more difficult words and to read from a varie ty of genres, said Linda Shaw, HES teacher and Talented and Gifted coordinator. Teachers involved in estab lishing goals for children were: Cherry Webber, Lea Calvert, Joy Krein, Cara Osmin, Karen Dubuque, Mary Haguewood, Pat Hentges, Jannie Allen, Bill Ewing, JoLynn Britt, Dave Gunderson, Kay Chinen and Linda Shaw. This year, 117 students earn ed 368 certificates. Twenty-six first graders earned 32 cer tificates; 35 second graders, 68; 31 third graders, 112; 23 fourth graders, 57; and 52 fifth and sixth graders, 99. Dinner was served at the home of Dan and Carmen Wilson. Other present were Crystal Dale from Cor vallis, Montana, Candy and Kenny Gates, Kenny and Con nie Jones, Jay and Lorene Papineau and family, and Shawn and Candiss Slagel. Following the dinner, the group spent the afternoon and evening playing ball at the athletic field in Lexington. -:- Mr. and Mrs. Dave Miller and son, Tye, of Scappoose, visited their daughter, Jenny, over the weekend. Cecil and Deipha Jones en joyed dinner at the Jim Bowen home in Goldendale, Washing ton on Sunday. -:- The Ermantrout family have finished setting their new trailer home on their lot on Water Street in Lexington. -:- The April card party was held Saturday evening at the Rebekah Hall.
