%> Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 10, 1996 - THREE Governor to give students award Alumni Association plans summer golf tournament Teacher Cara Osmin with third grade classroom A group of Heppner Elemen tary School students have earn ed recognition from the state and they want to be on hand to receive their award in person from Oregon State Governor John Kitzhaber. The children, students in Cara Osmin's third grade class, won one of five Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism awards from the Oregon Department of Transportation. According to Osmin, the kids made a "com munity minded resolution" at the beginning of the school year. They wanted to make the school grounds cleaner. As a result of their resolution, said Osmin, they decided to go around the school grounds every two weeks to pick up litter. Their project has now expanded to include the library/museum and city park grounds. Osmin, to make the project safer for the kids, wrote to SOLV for a grant to get orange vests and money to refurbish their school sign. The students also use SOLV bags to pick up litter. Their teacher then decided to nominate the class for the SOLV award and the students w on for "B est C lean u p Organized by Youth". Instead of sending one per son to represent the class at the awards presentation May 22, Osmin wants to send the whole class. However, the cost of sen ding all 19 children and seven chaperones will amount to around $600. They plan to stay overnight at a nearby school, so the cost would be for the bus, bus driver and food. The stu- After nearly a decade of tour naments, the H eppner High School (HHS) Alumni Commit tee has agreed to put the bas ketballs and volleyballs away.
