The R & W Reading Program,
sponsored by Alex and Patty
Rystedt and Scott and Carol
Hollis of the R & W Drive In of
Heppner, recently concluded
its 10th year at Heppner Ele
mentary School (HES).
The program was started by
past owners Tom and Helen
Riehl as a way to encourage the
development of recreational
reading habits and was con
tinued by the R & W's new
owners. Goals are established
by the teachers responsible for
reading instruction in the
classroom and vary depending
on the age and the reading
ability of each child. Participa
tion in the program is the
child's choice, but students
who reach the goals are re
warded with ice cream treats at
the Drive In. Students are
challenged to read frequently,
to read gradually more difficult
words and to read from a varie
ty of genres, said Linda Shaw,
HES teacher and Talented and
Gifted coordinator.
Teachers involved in estab
lishing goals for children were:
Cherry Webber, Lea Calvert,
Joy Krein, Cara Osmin, Karen
Dubuque, Mary Haguewood,
Pat Hentges, Jannie Allen, Bill
Ewing, JoLynn Britt, Dave
Gunderson, Kay Chinen and

tificates; 35 second graders, 68;
