Members of the Episcopal Church served., Barton Birdie: Anita Boyer and Muriel Clark won the meal ticket, Sophia Ayers, the door prize and Clark Palmer #13. Gerking received the birthday gift. The menu for August 11 will be meat loaf, whipped potatoes, ap- ple/raisin salad, whole wheat rolls and peaches. Members of the lone United Church of Christ will serve. TT ; senior board will meet follow ing the meal. July 29 the senior bus went to Pendleton where 12 seniors enjoyed lunch at the Senior Center. On the way back to Heppner they visited the Echo museum. Friday seven people gathered in the sitting room. Four played cards while the others visited and worked on a jigsaw puzzle. Saturday night 10 seniors went by bus to the dance at Hermiston. Sunday evening eight people watched the movie “ 18 Again” in the sitting room. The trip to Mt. St. Helens has been changed from Aug. 9 to Sat. The Oregon Together Group of Aug. 14 because a driver is not available. The number of potential years of life lost to alcohol and other drug related injuries equals those lost to cancer and surpasses those lost to heart disease, the two leading causes of death i~ *L ~ U.S. (Injury Prevention: Meeting the Challenge, the National Com mittee for Injury Prevention and Control. 1989). The huffing and puffing of diesel train engines may soon be replaced by the puffing of bicyclers, if a local group's ef forts prove successful. The Willow Creek spur line, which brings Union Pacific freight trains up from the Colum bia to pick up lumber at Kinzua mill, will probably be closing soon, Kent Goodyear told the Heppner Chamber of Commerce T- A ‘‘■'I Tuesday. But under a program called Rails to Trails, the rail line may be converted to other uses, such as a hiking, biking or bridal path, Goodyear said. He said it is almost certain because of low shipping out of the Heppner area, that the rail line will be abandoned, but under the conversion program after the rails and ties are ripped up. the railroad right of way could be preserved and improved for recreational uses. “ It's been quite successful in the Klamath Falls area.' ’ Goodyear said of the Rails to Trails program. A local group is meeting soon to determine if the plan is feesi- ble for this area. Goodyear said. The Willow Creek railroad spur is 45 miles long, with 30 bridges. That’s why the OSU Extension Service is offering a series of four “ Sewing as a Business” workshops in Oregon this sum mer and fall. A workshop will be held in Pilot Rock the week of Oct. 4. Applications are available in the Umatilla and Morrow Exten sion offices. Workshops are limited to 25 persons, with preference given to people interested in starting a sewing-related business. Second preference goes to those who would like to improve profitabili ty of an existing enterprise. Preference will also be given to those from the host counties. Others from surrounding areas will be admitted on a space available basis.
