Photo of Carl Martin when he became an OSP 24 years ago Senior Trooper Carl Martin has retired from the Oregon State Police after 24 years of service. Martin, 57, spent all of his police career in outposts. His first assignment was at Lakeview, where he stayed from 1969 to 1979. From there he was at Blue River from 1979 to 1982 and came to Heppner in 1982, where he served until his retirement. Martin has encountered many different situations during his 24 year career, some amusing and some downright dangerous. In one instance a Lexington woman and several other people were victims of burglaries at their cabins at Ditch creek and Penland Lake. The woman did some in vestigating on her own and pro vided information to Martin that lead to the arrest of two men in Washington. Some of the stolen property was recovered at the yard sale the men had held. But the story doesn’t end there. One of the suspects later attempted to escape from the Umatilla Coun ty Jail. Unfortunately for him, the sheets he was using to escape with tore. He fell three stories and broke both his ankles. -A man, who had given Mar tin false information, was discovered, after persistence on the computer by the Morrow County Sheriffs Office, to be a convict who had escaped from Folsom Prison in California several years earlier. The man was finally captured in a wood shed in Ukiah. -A man wanted for burglary and robbery in lone took off on horseback as Martin approached his house. The man eventually surrendered after trying to hide along Willow Creek. -After drinking at a Spray tavern, several people stole a school bus from the Spray school. Martin and the Wheeler County Sheriff captured the people in the Tamarack lookout tower and found the bus abandoned nearby. -A California man was arrested at Summer Lake for stealing baby geese and various rare bird and waterfowl eggs from the refuge. The man sold the eggs and birds to zoos. -Two local elk hunters observ ed a suspicious vehicle and pro vided Martin with information which lead to the arrest of two men. The men had shot and but chered a beef on the Wilkinson Ranch. -Martin’s closest call occurred while he was serving in Lakeview. He was in the process of arresting an intoxicated driver when the man pulled a gun. As the man fired. Martin deflected the gun, injuring his hand. The bride-elect graduated in 1988 from Franklin High School and attended Clackamas Community and WOSU. She is presently employed by the Barbara Sue Seals Agency. Finley’s parents are Don and Sharyn Finley of Heppner. He graduated from Twisp High School in 1985, attended the University of Washington and graduated from DeVry University in 1990. Finley is employed as an engineer for General Electric, Portland. The couple will be married August 29 at East Fork Estates in Damascus. Implement museum heads HCC agenda The Heppner Coordinating Council will meet at the GEODC office on Tuesday, August 10 at 7:30 a.m. The main agenda item will be discussion and strategy planning for the development of an antique farm implement museum in Heppner. Morrow County Judge Louis Carlson and Morrow County Museum director Marsha In the Service Sweek will be present to lead the discussion. Other agenda items include up dates on the status of the mini park at the junction of Willow and Hinton creeks, the possibility of a railroad musuem located in Heppner and an interest in in itiating a “ rails to trails” program. The public is welcome to attend. Marine Pfc. Jon T. Hill- recently completed the Automotive Organizational Maintenance Course. During the course at Marine Corps Service Support Schools, Marine Corps Base, Camp Le jeune, N.C., students are taught the technical knowledge and functional skills needed to effi ciently perform inspections, diagnostic tests, adjustments, ser vices and repairs to tactical motor transport equipment under gar rison or field operating conditions. The 1992 graduate of Riverside High School, Boardman joined the Marine Corps in June, 1991. He is the son of Jeanette Kreigh- baun, Irrigon. While Martin is retiring from the force, he doesn’t plan to quit working, adding that he’ll see what comes along. The Martins plan to stay in the area and look forward to spending some time visiting their children. Martin was raised by his parents, James and Lottie, at Wimer in southern Oregon. He graduated from Rogue River High School and Oregon State University with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering. In 1962 Martin married Geri Ambrose of LaGrande. That year he also enlisted in the U.S. Ar my serving in Germany and Viet Nam. He served in the army un til 1969. The Martins have five children: Sarah, who is married to Joe Struthers of Heppner, a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force in England. They have three children, Aubry, Bradley and Rebecca. John, who is a drill sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot at San Diego, CA. He and his wife, Debbie Cebelak of San Diego are expecting twins any day. Nancy of Corvallis. She and her husband Don Maddux, have a daughter Christina. Carl II, who is a sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps stationed in Hawaii. He will begin college this fall after his enlistment expires. Will, who is a lance corporal with the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, California. He is married to Heather Richardson from Georgia.
