SIX- Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 5, 1993 The AWANA club at Lex ington Baptist Church held their end-of-the-year awards banquet on Wednesday, April 28. with approximately 100 clubbers and their parents in attendance. Pastor Glenn Anderson gave a devo tional based on AWANA's key verse, found in II Timothy 2:15. He charged the listeners to strive to become “ Be Students.” Following dinner the annual awards were presented based on the clubbers’ achievements. Loren Unruh, WANA com mander and Sparks director, started the presentations w ith the Sparks (kindergarten through se cond grade clubbers). First Book Ribbons were presented to Sarah Barrow, Johnny Collin, Amy Jepsen. Daniel Jepsen. Jessica McGuire, Kimberly Morris, Isaac Stillman, Isaiah Stillman. Tommy Stillman, Krystal Tem ple. Darren Van Cleave, Mat thew Van Cleave. James Van Liew. and Casey Zumwalt. Sparks plaques, representing completion of all three Sparks handbooks, were presented to Darren Van Cleave and Meaghan Unruh. Tom Norton, director of the Pals and Pioneers, presented an nual awards. In the PALS club, third and fourth grade boys, David Norton earned his First book ribbon. Pioneers. Fifth and sixth grade boys presented with their First book ribbon were Mat thew Van Liew and Ben Stillman. Van Liew also earned the ex cellence trophy for his ac complishments in earning 80 total grade points while completing two handbooks. Sue Norton, director of Chums and Guards, presented the awards to the Chums (third and fourth grade girls) and Guards (Fifth and sixth grade girls). Chums who earned their First book ribbons were Emily Unruh and Jannicka McGuire. Emily and Jannicka were also presented with hand book review pins. Receiving Guards awards were Kaylee Zumwalt earning her First book ribbon and a handbook review pin. Leaders were awarded pins for their years of service in AWANA. Earning their First year pins were Andrew Anderson. LaRee Anderson, Mary Kay Bellamy, Nancy Jepsen, Mike McGuire, Truman Messenger, Marguerite Messenger. Frances Murty. Karen Temple. Sandra Van Liew . Chirella Wallace, and Barbara Zumwalt. Second-year pins were presented to Glenn Anderson, Phyllis Anderson, and Kathryn Unruh. A third-year pin was presented to Loren Unruh. Tom and Sue Norton have serv ed the longest, both being award ed six year pins. Sparks Leadership Serv ice pins were presented to LaRee Ander son, Nancy Jepsen. Mike McGuire, Truman Messenger, Marguerite Messenger, Karen Temple, Sandra Van Liew, and Chirella Wallace. The Sparks Award pin, for completing three Sparks handbtxrks, was presented to Sandra Van Liew. AWANA “ Bus Mom” cer- tiFicates were also presented to Mrs. Van Cleave, Mrs. Collin. Mrs. Gates, and Mrs. Morris for their willingness to transport clubbers each club night. Pastor Tim Van Cleave closed the evening with a prayer of thanks to God for a successful year and encouragement for next year’s club. Morrow County School District has released the follow ing names of honor students and honorable mention students for the third nine weeks. To be in cluded on the honor roll “ A” a student must have a grade point average of 3.5 to 4. To be includ ed on the honorable mention "B " a student must carry a grade point average of 3. to 3.49. lone Schools The Sparetimers Bowling League recently honored its top bowling teams. Awards were given for the first and second place teams. Tues day. chairman Stan Hoobing met w ith members of the Focus group to Finalize plans for the health fair. There were 120 people in attendance for the senior dinner on April 28. Nine meals were taken out. Members of the Nazarene and Seventh Da\ Adventist churches served. Rose Moe won the meal ticket. Lea Matthieu the door prize. Doris Drake the guest prize and Mary Goheen the birthday gift. A short board of directors meeting was held following dinner. Thursday. April 29 was the Health Fair with many health care booths. There was a good turnout, though not as many as hoped for, said a spokesperson for the event, but a good beginning. The Friday night dance was well attended, with more Hermiston and Pendleton people than local seniors. The Garden Club plant exchange Saturday was a success w ith many beautiful plants and bulbs available. There was only one table of cards in play Friday afterntxin. Several other people gathered to visit. Twelve people enjoyed videos from Alaska and Ireland Sunday evening. Bus trips scheduled during May include a trip to the Pendleton meal site on May 6: John Day meal site Fri.. May 14: Milton-Freewater May 18; Baker Museum and Interpretive Center Friday. May 21; Spray Senior Center May 27. Stop by the senior center for depar ture times. Seniors w ishing to go on any of these trips may call the Senior Center 676-9030 or stop by the office to sign up. Box 170 Boardman, Oregon 97818 481-9474 481-7351 Tacrine: New Medicine for A lzheim er’s Recently the Peripheral and Central Nervous System Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) unanimously recommended ap proval of tacrine (Cognex by Warner Lambert). The recom mendation was made for the treatment of symptoms of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is a neu rological condition which affects about four million Americans, or one out of ten persons over the age of 65. Some of the more complex abilities associated with thinking and remembering, such as language and perception, are lost. Researchers are focusing their efforts on neurotransmitter sub stances in the brain and enzyme inhibitors that affect memory and cognitive ability. One transmitter material is called acetylcholine. Some research has been directed at evaluating the value of adminis tering substances, such as lecithin, that increase levels of acetylcho line in the brain. During the last few years researchers have dis covered that other substances such as tacrine inhibit an enzyme that destroys acetylcholine The pres ence of acetylcholine is thought to help Alzheimer's patients. In one recent study, over half of the pa tients who received 80 mg of tacrine a day for 12 weeks showed improvements in cognitive assess ment scale ratings.
