Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 10, 1993 - FIVE Cards steamroll Bulldogs 101-48 Cards defeat Lady Cards beat Culver Echo By Anne Morter The Cards kept their momen tum going on Saturday at Culver where they steamrolled the Bulldogs, 101-48. They hit the court blazing and raced to a 33-10 first quarter lead and continued their hot shooting for the rest of the game, shooting 42-77 for 55 percent. Everyone on the Cardinal roster scored at least four points. Aaron Heideman paced the team with 18, followed by Jim Logan and Justin Miller with 12 points each. David Wagenblast dished out a whopping 14 assists and Logan had six steals. Deacon Heideman had four blocked shots. “ One of the best things about this past weekend was that we did an excellent job of passing the ball,” commented coach LaRue. “ We are starting to learn about each other and play together real well,” he added. This weekend, the Cards put their perfect 11-0 league record on the line as they take on Con don at home on Friday and travel to Cascade Locks on Saturday. The Condon games start at 4:30 p.m. with a JV boys match-up followed by the girls and boys varsity. On Friday, Feb. 5, they blew past Echo, 62-36, in a game that took two hours to play, and on Saturday, Feb. 6, they traveled to Culver and built a big lead in the first half and hung on for dear life. Everybody on both teams scored in the 62-36 lone win over Echo. The game was plagued by a total of 55 fouls, 28 for the Cards and 27 for the Cougars. The Lady Cards put the game out of reach early. They led 23-6 at the end of one and 26-16 at the half. Jamie Lovett paced the team with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Crystal Minster was the only other Card in double figures with 11 points. lone tallied a 43-33 rebounding advantage with Melissa McElligott leading the way with 11. Four girls, April Taylor, Randy Wise, McElligott and Lovett, each had four steals as the Lady Cards grabbed a team total of 24. Taylor had four assists and Becky Wagenblast had two blocked shots. lone shot 24 of 61 for 39 per cent from the floor while Echo hit 11 of 41 for 27 percent. Both teams shot 14 of 33 from the foul line for 42 percent. Splits convened: Fran Bameti 4-5 7 All of the lone Cardinals scored and the team shot over 50 percent in both of their games last weekend as the Cards defeated Echo 77-54 on Friday, Feb. 5 and had a big 101-48 victory against Culver on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Cards wind the regular season down this weekend with games against Condon and Cascade Locks. Echo shot and played well in the first quarter of their game, and held a 19-17 lead over lone. But the Cardinal machine got rolling in the second quarter and started to pull away. The halftime score was 40-33 in lone’s favor and they used the second half to stretch it out to the final 77-54 margin of victory. Aaron Heideman led three Cards into double figures with 11 points. Jim Logan and Ryan Halvorsen each added 10. Jason Halvorsen grabbed 11 rebounds as the Cardinals dominated the boards, 53-19. Aaron Heideman added eight as well as blocking four shots. Logan, Jared Ashbeck, David Wagenblast and Jake Bacon each nabbed four steals and Wagenblast dished out seven assists. Justin Miller had a good game with five assists, two of two shooting from the field along with good defense and a series of nice passes. The Cards connected on 37 of 64 of their shots from the floor for 57 percent. At the line, they hit three of five for 60 percent. Echo shot 22 of 48 from the floor for 46 percent and seven of 13 from the line for 54 percent. “ They started off like they were going to give us a battle,” said coach Del LaRue. “We hung in there and things started work ing out for us in the second quarter,” he added. IMS lose to Helix in close game 7 C H E V R O L E T By Luke Swanson The lone Middle School Car dinal boys took their first loss of the season to a strong Helix basketball team on January 21. The score was Helix 34 and lone 31. Poor free throw shooting and turnovers contributed to the loss as the Cards were only five of 18 from the line and committed 22 turnovers. lone lead most of the game with strong shooting and reboun ding from Kelly Morgan who had 17 points and 16 boards. Near the end of the game the Cards could not convert on their free throws. Helix grabbed the rebounds and out scored the Car dinals 14 to 7 in the last quarter. The Cardinals record now stands at four and one. The Cards took control of the first half which helped them win the game 48-40. The Cards built a 15-8 first quarter advantage and a 34-15 halftime edge. But with three girls in foul trouble and dif ficulties on offense and defense, their game stalled in the third quarter. “ We missed our first 14 shots in a row,” said coach Dana Heideman, noting that the team made just one shot out of 18 at tempts. “ We lost our concentra tion.” That big first half lead proved to be enough of a cushion though, as the Lady Cards held on for a 48-40 win. Culver never got closer than eight points in the se cond half. Melissa McElligott led all scorers with 17 points. Crystal Minster added 11 and Jamie Lovett had 10. The Cards rack ed up 58 rebounds to Culver’s 39 and many were offensive boards. Lovett led the attack with 19 followed by McElligott with 18. April Taylor accounted for half of the team’s 12 steals and she and Minster each had three assists. The Cards struggled with their shooting, making 17 of 57 for 30 percent from the floor. At the line, they made 12 of 25 for 48 percent. Culver had an even rougher time in the shooting department, connecting on just 15 of 63 from 23 percent from the floor and nine of 33 for 27 per cent from the line. “ It was ugly but a win,” com mented Heideman. "They were a pretty good team.” he said, although he noted that their troubles at the free throw line were to his team’s advantage. This weekend will conclude regular season play and the Lady Cards need to win just one of their games to finish in first place on the East side of the league. Friday they take on Condon for the third time this season. Each team has won one game. On Saturday, they travel to Cascade Locks. “We need to finish out the season with a couple of wins.” said Coach Heideman. The Morrow County Grain Growers annual growers meeting has been planned for this Friday, February 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Willow’s Grange in lone.
