Lady Cards wrestle for ball
On Saturday, February 6, the
Lady Cards faced Culver, one of
the better teams on the West side
of the league. The Cards took
control of the first half which
helped them win the game 48-40.
The Cards built a 15-8 first
quarter advantage and a 34-15
halftime edge. But with three
girls in foul trouble and dif
ficulties on offense and defense,
their game stalled in the third
quarter.
“ We missed our first 14 shots
in a row,” said coach Dana
Heideman, noting that the team
made just one shot out of 18 at
tempts. “ We lost our concentra
tion.”
That big first half lead proved
to be enough of a cushion though,
as the Lady Cards held on for a
48-40 win. Culver never got
closer than eight points in the se
cond half.
Melissa McElligott led all
scorers with 17 points. Crystal
Minster added 11 and Jamie
Lovett had 10. The Cards rack
ed up 58 rebounds to Culver’s 39
and many were offensive boards.
Lovett led the attack with 19
followed by McElligott with 18.
April Taylor accounted for half
of the team’s 12 steals and she
and Minster each had three
assists.
The Cards struggled with their
shooting, making 17 of 57 for 30
percent from the floor. At the
line, they made 12 of 25 for 48
percent. Culver had an even
rougher time in the shooting
department, connecting on just 15
of 63 from 23 percent from the
floor and nine of 33 for 27 per
cent from the line.
“ It was ugly but a win,” com
mented Heideman. "They were
a pretty good team.” he said,
although he noted that their
troubles at the free throw line
were to his team’s advantage.
This weekend will conclude
regular season play and the Lady
Cards need to win just one of
their games to finish in first place
on the East side of the league.
Friday they take on Condon for
the third time this season. Each
team has won one game. On
Saturday, they travel to Cascade
Locks. “We need to finish out the
season with a couple of wins.”
said Coach Heideman.
