Ione first defeated Heppner in the opening round and then downed their hosts, Condon, in the final. Un til Saturday, Condon sported a perfect record and had been rank ed number-one in the coach’s poll. In two previous attempts, the Ione boys team couldn’t keep the pace with the Heppner Mustangs. But in opening round play of the Condon Christmas Tournament, they finally pulled off a victory to advance to the championship game Saturday against Condon. The Cardinals downed the Mustangs by a final score of 68-59. The first quarter didn’t look good for the Cardinals, when the Mustangs jumped out to a 10-0 lead. According to head coach, Del LaRue, Ione spent most of the first quarter fighting their way back into the game. By halftime, the tide had turned in the Car dinals favor, with Ione leading, 31-26. Mike Garrett sparked a 19-point third quarter effort with 15 points of his own and the Cards coasted home for the win. Garrett was the game’s high scorer with 33 points. He also pulled down 20 rebounds, had five assists and three steals for an all-around good game. Gabe Gar cia and Deacon Heideman were the other Cards in double figures with 10 points each. Stressing re bounds in practice for the last week and a half paid off as the Cards outrebounded the Mustangs for the first time this season, 49-25. Aaron Heideman added 10 boards to Garrett’s 20. Gabe Garcia paced Ione with nine assists, followed by David Wagenblast with seven. On Saturday, the Cards pounc ed on Condon early and never trailed in the game. They led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and 36-24 at the half. The Blue Devils were never able to quite catch the Cardinals as Ione won 63-52. Garrett again led all scorers with 20 points followed by Gar cia with 18. Deacon Heideman pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Cardinals to a 37-36 re bounding advantage. Coach Del LaRue was pleased with the weekend’s games noting that he saw improvement in many aspects of the Cardinals game. He especially liked the fact that they only committed 10 turnovers in the Condon game, a key factor in the win. lone’s Mike Garrett (44) guards Condon player Condon hands Lady Cards’ first loss in the words of coach Dana Heideman, they “just couldn’t break over the hump." Condon ended up winning the game 53-43. Kari Morgan scored 17 points in the game to lead the Carindals. Janie Cupps added eight. Morgan had 16 rebounds and Cupps, 12 but Ione was outrebounded by Condon, 55-41. The most telling statistic was the lady Cards’ shooting percentage. Of the 81 Ryan Currin, 25, fights lone Cardinal for the rebound. No. 32 is Ryan Halvorsen. Drug, alcohol free dance for teens, New Year’s Eve The senior class parents will hold a drug and alcohol free dance with a disc jockey on New Years Eve, December 31, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The cost will be $3 single, $5 couple. Everyone in seventh grade and up is invited to attend. They will also have a can and bottle drive January 4, beginning at 11 a.m. “Please save your bot- tles and cans and support the senior class,” said a spokesper son. Preference will be given for riders between the ages of 10 and 15. The Lady Cards defeated Heppner on Friday to advance to the finals but ran into shooting and foul trouble against the towering Lady Blue Devils. The Ione Lady Cardinals defeated the Heppner Fillies for the second time this season in opening round play of the Con don Christmas Tournament. The game wasn’t as close as the 49-41 final score indicated thanks to a couple three-pointers and free throws by Heppner in the late going. Ione jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Heppner started a rally to close the gap. The Lady Cards led by 10 at halftime, 28-18. Ione applied some full court pressure in the third quarter, creating turnovers under their own baskets and setting up some easy scores. Kari Morgan led all scorers with 16 points followed by Janie Cupps with 12. Morgan also pac ed the rebounding effort with 16 boards. Brandi Ball added nine as the Lady Cards outboarded the Fillies 48-32. Ione racked up 17 assists and 20 steals with Nancy Morter leading the way in both categories, with four and five respectively. The Cardinals shot 22 of 61 for 36 percent from the floor and a paltry five for 15 from the line for 30 percent. Heppner shot 16 of 54 for 30 percent from the floor and seven of 13 for 54 percent from the line. Icy cold shooting from the field and two starters fouling out cost the Lady Cards a chance at the championship against Condon. The Blue Devils overpowered Ione in the first quarter, where they led, 13-4. Ione started to pull back into the game but still trail ed 26-18 at halftime. The Lady Cards managed to pull even with Condon in the third quarter, but Condon Blue Devil tries to get through the Lady Cards
