LOWEST PRICES OF THE YEAR' • OVERSTOCKS • SCRATCH & DENT • DISCONTINUED ITEMS • ONE-OF-A-KINDS The fourth annual Heppner alumni basketball and volleyball tournament will kick off Friday, December 27 at 6 p.m. with the Pre-‘68 team facing off against last year’s championship team, ‘72-‘75. The purpose of the tour nament is to raise money to pro vide funds for a multitude of deserving student programs in the Heppner schools. In the past the Heppner Alumni Association has contributed to youth soccer, colt basketball, H eppner High volleyball and baseball and the Mike Currin Memorial Scholar- Athlete Scholarship, to name just a few. Prior to the championship game slated for 6 p.m. Sunday, there will be a women’s free throw competition and a men’s three-point contest. “ Faithful supporters’’ awards will also be presented prior to the champion ship game on Sunday. Admission to the basketball tournament is $3 for adults and $l for children (preschool children are free), or a $15 family pass for the entire tournament. Competitors will pay $15 each, which will include two game shirts and tournament admission. The senior class will sell soup, sand wiches and desserts on Saturday in the high school home-ec room. Stuart Dick, one of the tourna ment organizers, would like to re mind team captains to contact their teammates and distribute the game jerseys. Dick stresses that “ children must be supervised at the tournament and the balconies will be open for adult seating.” Tournament schedules are as follows: Friday, December 27: 6 p.m. Pre-‘68 vs ‘72-75; 7:30 p.m. women’s basketball game; 9 p.m.-‘88-91 vs ‘76-79. Saturday 9 a. m.-volleyball competition begins at the jr. high gym; 12 noon: non-lettering alumni vs ‘68-71; 1:30 p.m .:‘80-82 vs ‘83-87; 3 p.m.: loser of the Friday 6 p.m. game vs loser of Sat. 12 noon game; 4:30 p.m.-loser Friday 9 p.m. vs loser Sat. 1:30 game; 6 p.m.: winner Friday 6 p.m. vs winner Sat. 12 noon game; 7:30 p.m.: women’s basketball Many return for this year’s contest Many Heppner High School alums plan on returning for this year’s alumni basketball tourna ment. Following are highlights of just a few of the returning players: Bill McLeod, ‘68, former HHS basketball and track player was a team member of the state basketball team that traveled to Coos Bay. Bill has worked for Safeway stores for many years, the past several years as manager in LaGrande. He transfered to the Hermiston store in November stepping in as the new manager and is planning on moving the rest of his family to Hermiston later in the year. Teammates Jerry Healy, John McCabe, Larry Pettyjohn, Russell Kilken ny and Dave Gunderson will play together once again. Russell Kilkenny, another ‘68 graduate and standout on the Coos Bay state team, graduated from the University of Oregon and Lewis and Clark College Law School. He has been a business attorney in the Portland area. Last years’ tournament winners ‘72-‘75 hope to defend their alumni title with help from Jerry Gentry, John Kilkenny, Ken Eckman, Charlie Sumner, John Boyer, Steve Rhea, Gary Watkins along with others coming home. Mark Huddleston ‘78 another in spirational standout for Heppner, took carpentry courses in Portland after graduation. He works for Portland Paper Pro ducts. He is married to Janice Sherman and have two boys and one girl. They live in Beaverton. Dale Holland, ‘80, participated in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to play foot ball at OIT, then transferred to LaGrande and played baseball for EOSC while earning his teaching degree. Dale taught at Ontario and Unity before returning to Morrow County teaching at lone. Dale will be joined by family members Doug and Debbie. Tony Currin ‘80, attended BMCC and finished with a degree from Cal Poly while pursuing rodeo. Tony has had a successful professional rodeo career thus far and competed at the national finals rodeo in LasVegas in steer wrestling. He enjoys the alumni games each year and will be join ed by his brother Steve. The alumni committee donated money tow ards the Mike Currin memorial scholars athelete fund which was presented to ‘91 graduate Bob Krein. Wayne Wilgers ‘87 graduate participated in basketball and track while in high school. He continued his schooling at Western Oregon State College in Monmouth and competed in the track program there qualifying for the nationals. Wayne comes back each year for the games and has finished his schooling with a degree in criminal justice. The ‘88-91 team may be nicknamed “ The Young Guns” of this year’s tournament with Duane Ball, Russell Britt, Dick Devin, and Slater Mitchell filling part of the largest roster of the tournament. They hope to be a threat for this year's title. The championship game begins at 6 p.m. Women’s games more competitive The women’s basketball and volleyball team format has been altered this year with graduating years mixed, to encourage more competitive games by evening up the talent. The women com petitors may obtain their basket ball roster from Lana Orr 676-9973 and volleyball roster from Susie Hisler 676-5878. Rosters will also be posted on the jr. high and high school gym doors by December 26. Women’s volleyball competi tion will commence at 9 a.m. Saturday at the jr high gym. Prior to the championship game Sunday there will be a women’s free throw competition. Patty Luciani Matheny was a 1972 graduate and a varsity cheerleader. She attended Mt. Hood and Blue Mountain Com munity College. While obtaining a degree at BMCC she was a member of the 1973 regional championship basketball team. Patty will return to the alumni volleyball tournament. Susan Healy Hisler ‘74, par ticipated in volleyball basketball and track programs at HHS. She attended BMCC on athletic scholarships for volleyball and basketball. Her freshman year at BMCC she was a member of the National volleyball and basketball teams that flew to Michigan and Indiana for National Jr. College Tournaments. Her sisters Mary and Maureen will also be a part of the tournament. Coming home from Chevy Chase, Maryland, Julie Grieb ‘79, will join the tournament festivities. While involved in many activities and sports at HHS Julie went on to graduate from Oregon State University. She works for the National 4-H Coun cil under the manager training volunteer development program. Julie looks forward to the reunion of past players, friends and fans coming home for the holiday tournament. Her sister Geri and brother Ken will also return. Margaret Kincaid participated in volleyball, basketball and track at HHS. Graduating from Hepp ner in 1981, she went on to graduate from EOSC earning her teaching degree. She did her practice teaching at Heppner before moving to Fort Hays Col lege in Kansas where she was an assistant graduate teacher. Margaret taught swim lessons in lone and Heppner for many year* and is employed at KaNeeTah resort as an aquatic director. Her sister Mary will also play in the tournament. Pam O rr graduated from Prairie City in 1985 but was an outstanding Heppner High athlete before her move. She participated in volleyball, basketball and track and has come back each year to play. Pam will be joined by her brothers Greg and Jeff. Andrea Ball will graduate in March from Portland State with a degree in community health education. She was a 1986 graduate from Heppner and has returned every year to participate in the alumni tournament. Andrea lettered in volleyball, basketball and was student body president. Missy Eubanks Cutsforth, ‘87, will be making her first ap pearance in the alumni games since her year as a Heppner Fil ly basketball player. Her sophomore year at HHS she was a part of the ‘85 third place state basketball team, coming back in ‘86 with the championship team and a trip to the volleyball state tournament. Missy graduated from George Fox College with a business degree while playing basketball for George Fox on an athletic scholarship She currently coaches the eighth grade basket ball at Heppner Jr. High with Geri Grieb assisting. Other team mates from ‘87 are Tina David son and Cindy Stroeber. Nikki Brisbois ‘91, home for the holidays is a member of the BMCC volleyball and basketball teams. This will be her first alum ni appearance. Nikki participated in volleyball and basketball while at HHS
