TWO - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 9, 1991 H eppner sinks V iking ship 82-65 Lady Cards win over Helix Anne Morter The two teams that most Colum bia Basin Conference coaches are mentioning as possible favorites for the CBC title met Saturday night in Heppner. The Mustangs jumped on the Umatilla Vikings early and posted an 82-65 win to go 2-0 in league after the first weekend of play. Heppner sprinted to an 11-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game and coach Padberg said that, “ the good start was a key factor in us get ting the win.” The Vikings, 6-1 in prt-season. staggered back and trail ed only 23-18 at the quarter. Rick Osmin had the hot hand for the Mustangs in the quarter, scoring nine of his team-high 20 points ear ly in the game. The Mustangs kept the pressure up in the second period and led 48-33 at the half as the Vikings couldn’t figure out the Mustangs' full court pressure. Heppner put the game away in the second half, switching to a 3/4 court trapping press. The Mustangs scored on the transition game and benefi ted from some good passing. The Mustangs had four players in double figures led by Rick Osmin. Rick Koffler came off the bench w ith 16 points, including a pair of three- pointers and Jason Britt hit for 15 points with two treys. Doug Devin added 10 points to go along with four assists. Brandon Pedro had a great all around game with six points, along with 10 rebounds and five assists. He also rejected several of the Viking field goal attempts. Umatilla was led by Matt Iveson with a game-high 24 points. Rusty Green added 12 and Loren Pursifull had 10. Heppner, 2-0 in league play, travels to Pilot Rock Friday. January 11 and then returns home to host Stanfield Saturday night. Both dates feature both JV and Varsity boys and girls playing each night. M ustangs run past W ahtonka Eagles The Heppner Mustang. traveled to The Dalles Friday night and started the league season out right, running past an outmanned Wahtonka Eagles team ^ 1 -50. Wahtonka started out gamely, leading 18-17 after one quarter. The Mustangs, getting limbered up after the long bus ride, outscored the Eagles. 28-16, in the second stanza to lead by 11 at halftime. Cardinals defeat Helix By Anne Morter By Jessica Stefani The lone Middle School boys battled against Arlington last week, January 3 defeating Arlington 20-10. The lone boys got off to a great start and by halftim e led by 10. Coach Dean Robinson credits Jason Halvorsen and Gregg Holtz with having their best games yet. Halvorsen, the leading scorer, add ed 16 points, two rebounds, and eight steals. Gregg Holtz helped the team with four points, one rebound, and three steals. Jim Garret chipped in defensively with six steals. Sean Casey was also credited with being the most improved A team player. Coach Robinson also added that the teamwork effort was the best of the year. Coach Robinson also noted that Kelly Morgan was the most improv ed B team player. Both lone A and B teams have a record of 2-1. With a previous loss to Echo, and a win over Fossil, the lone boys are in good shape for a winning season. The lone Cardinals kicked off league play with two wins last weekend, defeating Helix on Friday and downing Dufur on Saturday. The Helix game saw junior standout. Mike Garrett, score 46 points to help the Cardinals winning effort. The Cards’ season record moved back over .500 to 5-4 and their league mark went to 2-0. The Cards defeated Helix 81-66, behind Mike Garrett's “ Michael Jordan-like performance.” The game was close all the way with the Cardinals trailing for most of the first half. Just before halftime, a scoring spurt put them ahead by seven. 37-30. After the half, the Grizzlies scrambled back to tie the game at 44 and the lead changed hands several times until lone was finally able to pull ahead with less than five minutes to go. Mike Gar rett led all scorers with 46 points, hitting a red-hot 73 percent of his shots from the field (19 of 26). Rick Osmin with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists and Brandon Pedro with 14 points and seven rebounds both turned in solid performances. Mike Beardsley led Wahtonka with 17 counters. Heppner canned 35 field goals in 85 attempts for 41 percent for the contest. At the charity stripe they were 19-30. The Car dinals dominated the boards, outre- bounding the Grizzlies, 54-28. Gar rett also led that attack, pulling down 22 boards, 12 of those being offen sive rebounds. Deacon Heideman also had an outstanding rebounding effort, grabbing 18 boards. Gabe Garcia dished out seven assists and David Wagenblast added five. Gar rett nabbed four steals and Wagenblast grabbed three to lead in that department. The Cards shot 38 percent from the floor, making 29 of 76. From the line they hit 21 of 31 for 68 percent. Helix was 27 of 70 from the field for 39 percent, and 4-7 from the line for 57 percent. “ Mike was in the right place at the right time,” said Coach Del LaRue. “ He had a good shooting night- we got him the ball at the right time,” added LaRue. He also noted that Garrett's 46 points were a “ quiet 46" in that it wasn’t obvious that he was dominating the scoring until all the stats were tallied. LaRue also commended Deacon Heideman for a great job on the boards. By The lone Lady Cardinals con tinued on their winning way, winn ing their first two league contests last weekend. On Friday, January 4, they squeaked by Helix at Helix and on Saturday, January 5, they treated the home fams to a victory over Dufur. The Lady Cards’ season now stands at 8-3 with their league mark at 2-0. The Cards jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter of the Helix game and went on to win, 45-39. Despite holding a 15-point lead several times in the game, the Lady Cards couldn’t seem to completely shake the Grizzlies. With standout Kari Morgan spending much of the game on the bench due to fouls and some trouble executing the offense, the Cardinals found that the Grizzlies weren’t about to roll over and play dead. Kari Morgan led all scorers with 16 points. Janie Cupps added eight. The teams were even in the reboun ding department with Cupps pulling down six boards and Nancy Morter, Kari Morgan and Wendy Anderson each adding five. Thanks to their full court press, the Cards racked up 21 steals with Cupps, Morter and Morgan each grabbing three. Nan cy Morter led in assists with three. outscore Dufur lone shot 20 of 66 from the floor for 30.3 percent and they were 5-15 from the line for 33.3 percent. The Grizzlies managed only 27.6 percent from the floor (13 of 47) but were more accurate from the line, hitting 13 of 25 for 52 percent. “ Helix is one of those places-it’s a hard place to play,” said coach Dana Heideman, adding that he never takes a win for granted in the Helix gym. Heideman commented that lame Cupps played a good game and that Kari Morgan had a good shooting night, hitting eight of 15 from the field. On Saturday, December 5, the Lady Cards enjoyed a home crowd and gave them what they wanted to see in a 46-23 win over the Dufur Rangers. lone held a 10-2 lead at the end of the fust quarter and a 23-16 edge at halftime. In the second half, the Cards reeled off nine points before the Rangers scored and then held Dufur to just seven points for the entire half. Kari Morgan was the game's high scorer with 19 points. Nancy Morter IMS girls defeat Arlington By Becky Wagenblast The lone Middle School girls’ team started out on the right foot for the new year defeating the Arlington Goslings on Thursday, Jan. 3 44-9. lone took advantage of many steals and converted them into lay- ins. Kimberly Bedortha made eight points in the first quarter. The Car dinals led ending the quarter, 18-0. In the second quarter lone put some substitutes in with only one starter playing the whole quarter. Lynde Minster, with two points, was the only Cardinal to score in the se cond quarter. IMS was still ahead going into the half. The third quarter saw all the bench getting action. Three Cardinals scored, making a total of 10 points, l-ead scorers were Becky Picknell and Dawn Boor each with four points. In the fourth quarter lone’s starters once again got to play. Leading scorers were Melissa McEllligott and Becky Wagenblast with four points each. The Cardinals ended the game with a strong finish. They won the game, 44 to 9. The last win makes the Cardinals 3-0. lone had several steals and their running offense was the key to the game. Kimberly Bedortha was high point with 12 points. Also in the category was Jaime Lovett, six points; Lynde Minster, six; and M elissa M cE lligott, Becky Wagenblast, Bridget McElligott, Becky Picknell, and Dawn Boor, each scoring four points. The Cardinals’ B team also beat Arlington. Dawn Boor was high point with 12 points. lone’s next game is Thursday, Jan 10, against Helix, at 1:30 p.m. They also play Saturday, against Echo, at 10 a.m Both games will be held in lone. added nine and Brandi Ball had eight. Danielle Stefani grabbed four steals and Morgan had three while Morter dished out three assists to pace the Cardinals, lone shot 31.5 percent from the floor, making 17 of 54 while Dufur managed just eight of 38 for 21.1 percent. From the free throw line, the Cards hit just 12 of 23 for 52 percent, but the Rangers managed just seven of 17 for 41 percent. “ Kari had a good game,” said coach Dana Heideman. ‘She has been playing very consistently.” The Cardinals play Condon this Saturday in a key contest for both teams. The game will be played in Condon which Heideman says is good for 10 points for the Blue Devils. “ It should be a real close game. There's a lot of rivalry and a lot of friction between the two teams,” said Heideman. Action will start at 1 p.m. with a JV girls game, followed by JV boys and then both varsity matches. Photo by Pam Minster lone Middle School girls grab rebound in Arlington win. lone JV girls defeat Stanfield By Anne Morter The lone JV girls started the new year right, defeating Stanfield in Stanfield last Thursday, 45-28. Janie Cupps was the high scorer with 14 points and Kristine Bedor tha added 10. Heidi Nelson pulled down seven rebounds and Kristine Bedortha nabbed five steals to pace the Lady Cards in those categories. lone shot a fine 44 percent from the field 19 of 43, while Stanfield managed just 17 percent nine of 52. The Cards were seven of 14 from the line for 50 percent and the Tigers hit 10 of 18 for 56 percent. Coach Tom Bedortha commend ed Heidi Nelson for her defensive ef forts and Janie Cupps for her offense. Rhea Creek group meets By Delpha Jones The Rhea Creek Extension Group met at the home of Leila Palmer on Wednesday for the regular meeting. The program was on “ scarves,” their use and beauty by Virginia Peck. Ten members were present and a new member, Marie Van Et ta, was welcomed. A lovely potluck dinner was enjoyed at noon follow ed by the business meeting. Fillies beat Umatilla 48-44 By Lisa Willman On January 5 the Fillies came home to play Umatilla in front of a good-sized heme crowd beating Umatilla 48-44. The first quarter both teams were playing man to man defense and there were a lot of traveling calls on both sides. The Fillies managed to sink the first basket of the game but at the end of the quarter the score was tied at eight. With seven minutes left in the se cond quarter Heppner had five team fouls with Umatilla shooting 1-1 at the foul line. Umatilla had trouble connecting at the charity stripe but scored off turnovers to take a lead. With 4:30 left in the half the Fillies started working together to make a comeback and lead at the half 25-22. The third quarter was played very defensively. Neither team scored a lot of points but the Fillies managed to stay ahead, leading by eight points. In the fourth quarter the game got exciting as Umatilla tried to make a comeback. The Fillies got in foul trouble and Umatilla made their shots count. With 2:08 left Umatilla started a full court press to create turnovers and score. When the clock ran out the Fillies had won their se cond league game, 48-44. Three Fillies led their team in dou ble figures. Nikki Brisbois, Holly Eckman and Amy Greenup all made 12 points. Brisbois also added 12 re bounds, four steals and three assists and Eckman had four rebounds, nine steals and three assists. Coach Dowdy happily stated, “ We are starting to play better as a team. We are taking better shots and we have more patience when the go ing gets tough. We are now 2-0 in league play and I feel we will con tinue to look better each game.” Next weekends games will be Fri day in Pilot Rock and Saturday at home against Stanfield.
