The lone Lady Cardinals con
tinued on their winning way, winn
ing their first two league contests last
weekend. On Friday, January 4,
they squeaked by Helix at Helix and
on Saturday, January 5, they treated
the home fams to a victory over
Dufur. The Lady Cards’ season now
stands at 8-3 with their league mark
at 2-0.
The Cards jumped out to a 10-0
lead in the first quarter of the Helix
game and went on to win, 45-39.
Despite holding a 15-point lead
several times in the game, the Lady
Cards couldn’t seem to completely
shake the Grizzlies. With standout
Kari Morgan spending much of the
game on the bench due to fouls and
some trouble executing the offense,
the Cardinals found that the Grizzlies
weren’t about to roll over and play
dead.
Kari Morgan led all scorers with
16 points. Janie Cupps added eight.
The teams were even in the reboun
ding department with Cupps pulling
down six boards and Nancy Morter,
Kari Morgan and Wendy Anderson

court press, the Cards racked up 21
steals with Cupps, Morter and
Morgan each grabbing three. Nan

more accurate from the line, hitting
13 of 25 for 52 percent.
“ Helix is one of those places-it’s
a hard place to play,” said coach
Dana Heideman, adding that he
never takes a win for granted in the
Helix gym. Heideman commented
that lame Cupps played a good game
and that Kari Morgan had a good
shooting night, hitting eight of 15
from the field.
On Saturday, December 5, the
Lady Cards enjoyed a home crowd
and gave them what they wanted to
see in a 46-23 win over the Dufur
Rangers. lone held a 10-2 lead at the
end of the fust quarter and a 23-16

Fillies beat Umatilla 48-44
By Lisa Willman
On January 5 the Fillies came
home to play Umatilla in front of a
good-sized heme crowd beating
Umatilla 48-44.
The first quarter both teams were
playing man to man defense and
there were a lot of traveling calls on
both sides. The Fillies managed to
sink the first basket of the game but
at the end of the quarter the score
was tied at eight.
With seven minutes left in the se
cond quarter Heppner had five team
fouls with Umatilla shooting 1-1 at
the foul line. Umatilla had trouble
connecting at the charity stripe but
scored off turnovers to take a lead.
With 4:30 left in the half the Fillies
started working together to make a
comeback and lead at the half 25-22.
The third quarter was played very
defensively. Neither team scored a
lot of points but the Fillies managed
to stay ahead, leading by eight
points.
In the fourth quarter the game got
exciting as Umatilla tried to make a
comeback. The Fillies got in foul
trouble and Umatilla made their
shots count. With 2:08 left Umatilla
started a full court press to create
turnovers and score. When the clock
ran out the Fillies had won their se
cond league game, 48-44.
Three Fillies led their team in dou
ble figures. Nikki Brisbois, Holly
Eckman and Amy Greenup all made
12 points. Brisbois also added 12 re
bounds, four steals and three assists
and Eckman had four rebounds, nine
steals and three assists.
Coach Dowdy happily stated,
“ We are starting to play better as a
team. We are taking better shots and
we have more patience when the go
ing gets tough. We are now 2-0 in
league play and I feel we will con
tinue to look better each game.”
