M IK E E Recall o f a politician is the ultimate rejection, lar more serious than mere rejection o f a reelect ion hid Because there is no oppming candidate, the vote is simply " y e a " or "nay " R ccj II is much like saying, "any other politician is better than this o n e ." I think recall is appropriate when an office holder is a cro o k. involved in traud. taking bribes, or otherwise engaging in conduct that eminently threatens the safety o f the charge For example. I think a Treasurer who systematically from taxpayer receipts should recalled I don't, however, think recall is ap propriate where there is simply a difference o f opinion about political philosophy As I sec it, that is the case with the current recall election involving School Hoard members H ill Doherty and Marcia Kemp Reading the O f licial Ballot statements for demanding rec all and the responses thereto does m»thing to shed light on the real issues In my view, these two directors have become merely the- scapegoats of a political philosophy shared equally by all members o f the hoard and inc identally by a majority o f the voters in M orrow County Ihe real issue. I believe, centers around compensation for teachers Ihe maiority view, reflected by the hoard, is that teachers, especially those with experience and advanced training should not be compensated as well in M orrow County as they would be in most other sim ilarly sized districts across the State of Oregon lh a t view is supported by the belief that those who have devoted their lives to the education o f children, advanced their own education to lhat purpose, further advanced their learning through years o f doing, can and are doing no better at the jo b than just any person o ff the street Oh to he sure, there are minor justifications "R eal teachers don't strike " "R e a l teachers don’t walk picket lines " “ There arc tliousands o f good teas hers out there to replace our own " “ Real teachers don't bring in outside negotiators to represent them " " I 'm glad to see all the teachers leave the d istrict, if they don't want to live here, we don’t need them "M o rro w County can't afford to pay comparable wages “ “ Our kids can't rc jd " “ I don’t care about credentials, all a teacher has to he is warm and caring ” The subject hoard members simply hold the point of view that the com parative value o f teachers, especially those with advanced education and experience, is relatively low I think the remaining board members and the m ajority o f voters hold the same view The proponents o f recall hold a different point o f view In my vie w . that i n not a compelling reason lor recall Even d the two hoard members were recalled, the remaining hoard members would appoint their replacements It is likely that tin.- replacements with the same point o f view would he selected I think it highly unlikely that a i h.mgc o f philosophy could be effected by recall o f less than an cn tire board Is this a tw o faced person on my part ’ I think not. given my helicl that the hoard including the tw o subject members, accurately reflects the ma jority view 1 think the goal should be to change Ihe m ajority view, not merely oust a couple o f hoard members I think there is much that can he done to do so consideration I doubt that there is anyone in M orrow County who wanted things to come to this I certainly did not However, it is time lor a change and this recall is M orrow County 's op portunity to achieve that change I am asking each voter to weigh the circumstances o f recent events in his or her own mind II. as a Mor row County voter, you do not tcel that you have been p ro p e rly represented on our School Board, then I urge you to join me in voting lor the recall (s) 1 auric Jcnks 705 M t Adams Hoardmun I .issi o, 4 oz |«ir, reg CHEVROLET ------- No On Recall Recall is only option To the Editor The purpose o f the board recall election is to return to better schools here through improved relations am ong the c o m m u n itie s , ad mmistrators and teachers M oving from a background ot go«xl schools with good support from communities, confidence in district supts and successful negoda tions with teachers, we have chang ed in the past lew years to a weaken ed education and failure in negotia tions (contracts are still unsigned) VMi.it caused this change ’ Those o f us who put the recall on the ballot sincerely believe the major causes (not all but the mam ones) were I ) unsatisfactory leadership hy the district supt and 2) hiring a proles sional OSBA negotiator thus rexjuir mg one from OEA Despite whcdul ed appearances hy our represen ta tiv e s . phone c a lls , w ritte n messages and lists o f signatures ask ing the board (and the supt to use - <»» H eppner Gazette-Tim es.
