Yet, in other portions of our nation, quite the opposite is true It seems there is no middle ground with grouse; depending upon w hich end of the coun try you hunt them, grouse can he either incredibly adept or surprisingly stupid In the eastern United States he is said to be known as the King of Game Birds, revered for his heart stopping and utterly sporting flushes from heavy cover and warjv speed flight through impenetrable woodland tangles Downing one of these birds on the wing is an event to be toasted by even the most accomplished of twced-clad shooters, while bagging a limit in this manner calls for full tledge^l cclebra tion Hence, if one were to speak ill of (he ruffed grouse back East, he would almost certainly be thrashed, drawn and quartered and, worse, lose his stoveside seat near the pickle barrel at the local mercantile, removing any hope of ever being immortalized in a Norman Rockwell type masterpiece Here in the West, however, about the only time you can expect a grouse to burst forth is when you arc not hunting him It usually happens when you arc seeking larger game, trying to pick your way out of a thick, creek bottom fir patch when several ruffs explode from all around, sounding as if they arc defoliating every tree in their path Or you're silently creep ing along a high mountain ridge, expecting to see a huge buck or bull with each passing instant, when a large blue grouse suddenly erupts trom beneath your feet with a commotion not unlike (hat of a runaway B-29 Either in stance will often leave you yearning for that extra change of clothes back at camp But go hunting specifically for grouse, and the situation changes dramatically You may hunt your (ail off, and when you finally find the birds they either sit and stare at you or scurry off along the ground Often, your only chance for a successful hunt is to ground sluice those you see. which can make for a somewhat ant ¡climactic, though productive, (Hiting This is not to say that western grouse hunting is a dishkahlc. or even unsporting, venture These birds arc excellent table tare, especially since most birds shot arc undoubtedly the young of the year Despite their ap parent complacency around humans, be it arrogance or ignorance, grouse have the ability to survive the harsh natural elements common to the minin tainous regions they inhabit When nun himself becomes too much of a threat, such as in the eastern states where grouse populations experience heavy hunting pressure, the birds respond by becoming increasingly wary and intolerable of man Indeed, biologists believe the reason western gmuse appear so inept is due only to the fact that they are lightly hunted Usually the biggest challenge of grouse hunting in our part of the coun try is finding the birds Though the habitats of both ruf fed and blue grouse often overlap, the preferences of each are somewhat different Ruffed grouse arc rarely found far from water, choosing damp, brush tilled drainages as their favorite domicile Scavmed ruff hunters often look for running water canyons choked with stands of fir and elderberry Blue gnnise are about twice the sue of ruffs and prefer higher, big timber ridges A good method of scouting blue grouse country is to drive high, ndgetop roads right at dawn Blues like to use these mads to dust themselves just after descending from their roosts, leaving plenty of sign with the birds themselves nearby Grouse season is open now in Eastern Oregon and continues through October 24 The bag limit is three ruffed and three blue grouse per day Geography Dictates Intelligence of Grouse W H ILE YOU W A IT 1 /4 ” HYDRAULIC HOSES 3 /8 3 /4 ( 1/2 r COMING SOON f HIGH PRESSURE 4-BRAID HYDRAULIC HOSES Any Length Lots of Fittings Heppner Auto Parts 6 /6 -9 1 2 3 148 E Center Heppner < napa > All lite right port* in all the right place* celebrated their 50th wedding an nicer vary Aug 26 at the Red Lion in P e n d l e t o n ______________ Chamber Chatter By Claudia Hugo#« chambar manage» There's no reason to he hored this fall if you’re a community oriented person Mark your calendars HEIX’ meetings Wednesdays at 4 a m at Kuhn A Spicer offices Don't forget the HEDC' Family Pic n»c at I p m Sunday.
