Portland and Washington D C pose a far greater threat to our way of life than do our neighbors on the other side of the base line. Just as wc were beginning to feel some success in our peace efforts, a new battle has opened on a new fn*nt that has all the prospect of dividing neighbors, families and friends on the nature of the Hatfields and McCoys Wc arc already seeing major onslaughts of insults, governmental declarations and acts of deceit and deception This is not a mere north south thing reminiscent of the American Civil War, but rather an cast west dispute combining all the features of World War II. the Cultural Revolution and the Cold War Wc expect full blown battle to break out any minute Until recently, there were three entities in this fight, and that gave it an air of civility since each w-as kept off balance by the unpredictability <ol the participants Now, however, one party is so engrossed in their <*wn internal struggle as to be a non-participant With the battle thus focused, wc must brace for an increase in hostilities and a concentration of effort Wc arc rclcrring. of course, to Ihe battle between Bo.irdman and Ir- rigon for the title as Walleye Capital of the World Boardnun claims, without dispute, thal the largest Walleye recorded bv a Washington tishe.inan came from waters just oft the Boardnun dock Irrigon claims, with much dispute that the largest Walleye recorded by an Oregon fisherman was boated near Irrigon i Boardnun folks concede that it was near Irrigon but nearer to Boardnun) Both cities have laid claim to the title through official proclanution by the respective governing bodies Their acts, however, followed the self claimed title by Umatilla while that city was under scigc by the pn> lumbert forces now that that colorful major has resigned, it would appear that Umatilla is again so enamored with its own political struggle as to he a non entity. (Sec what wc mean by spending all your energy fighting your neighbor that you have none left to light the world’) To enhance its claim. Boardnun hosted a regional tournament sponsored by Mariner Marine last summer and the big fish that tournament (12 pounds plus) was the biggest fish caught in any of the regional tournaments across the nation last year Boardnun's Bruce Nichols anil Frank Bates are. at this very minute, fishing in Mariner s National Finals in Minnesota inten ding to hnng home the top prize of S40.(MH) and the additional basis for claim: If Boardman hosts the best Walleye fishermen, wouldn’t u also be true that Boardnun offers the best Walleye fishing? To counter this attack, and to enhance its claim. Irrigon sends out lots of citizens to fish every day and commissions those who don't fish to tell lots of fish stories Most observers arc ready to concede the title of Fish Story Capital of the World to Irrigon right now We intend to cover this continuing story, some of it from the front lines There must be a new angle seen only with rixl and reel in hand, and there must be a new story or two hanging around Brown's Truck Stop. Wc even intend to investigate the talcs we hear in Heppner about the fish in the Willow Creek impoundment Maybe there is a new battle shap ing up tor the Fish Story Capital On another issue I'm sponsoring a contest of my own and you are in vited to participate In fact, all I intend to do is count your votes and an- nouncc the result I he contest the Boondoggle of all Time.
