I had become really scry bitter about this teacher strike What a needless waste of energy with no winners, all losers and to much hale and discontent that I saw no future at all Teachers lost more in wages during the strike than they will receiver in raises over the entire contract The Board spent more in fighting the strike than they would have spent on the teachers demands before the strike The citizen committee that eventually jumped in to get it settled, put their personal reputations on the line and lost Most importantly, the communi ty and (he children lost an efficient, harmonious, well respected cduca twin system I was hitter, despondent and prepared to leave In nearly every other district experiencing a teacher strike it has taken more than 10 years to make up the lost ground I wasn't prepared to spend the next 10 years here fighting a battle that doesn't exist elsewhere We put the place up for sale The twelve hundred dollars the strike cost us put us in default on the mortgage so it would only he a flutter of time anyway Francie and I both worked up our resumes Mine is in circulation, she's updating her crexJentials She talked to an old college classnutc who nukes $10.000 more than she does in another district with a lighter class load Wc put together a long list o f districts that prefer mature, experienced teachers and are willing to pay for them I bought a few classified ads But then we saw those young men stop to pick up the garbage We can do that, too And it's such a decent thing to do wc ought to And before wc even got home, each of us had, without really talking about it. decided that that was |ust what we were going to do Pick up the mess and nuke this just a little better place to live At least no worse for our having passed this way It won't be easy It never is easy to stop your headlong journey to pause and pic k up the pieces from a garbage spill Each o f us in our own selfish way has our own selfish goal and to interrupt that to serve our fellow nun is sometimes |ust too much o f an imposition Too much o f a bother It takes 11 me. and energy and sometimes a loss of pride to stop and pick up what wc spill, right the wrong we may have been caught up in Hut it's the only decent thing to do The first step Gary. Marcia. I'm sorry about the ads That was the wrong thing to do The right thing is for you. Francie and I to sit down over dinner (I know where wc can get a good bottle of wine) and talk about the future The hospital trip ’ A cersical laminectomy Cured the terrible pain down my right arm. instantly and completely The neck is still a little sore.
