lo the Pditor
The law makers in Salem arc up
to their old tricks, nuking had laws
Serial bill V74 is just such a law
Senate hill V74 would give cities the
power to condemn land outside ami
beyond the city limits
Farmers and ranchers as well as
country people should take ivyic of
this proposed law
Right now the hill is in senator
Glenn Otto's committee and hasn't
come up tor a hearing yet You can
reach his office in Salem at
I KdO 327 7tKV and for information
as to the progress of senate hill V74
you can ring up I K00 332 2313
The city o f Tualatin is try ing to
pull a fast one ITiey want to rewrite
the law so thal the city has the right
to condemn land outside the city
limits And senator Paul Phillips
(Tigard) was only too glad to draft
senate hill V74 for the city of
I ualatin
My eighty seven year old mother
ami I live on a small farm just out
side Ihe city limits The city wants
to put in road improvements thal
would take 1.333 feet o f our iron

tage an acre ot land in all
The bottom line is that Tualatin
wants to take the land through con
detonation ami to date they won't sit
down at the bargaining table,
because they don't want lo pay fair
market value, that's the way I see it
So now they want to change the law
Senate hill V74 would make had
law, because it gives tmi much
power to the cities and also I think
it deprives ihe country people their
constitutional rights, like “ due pro
cess and all
You would think the county com
missioners would protect the rights
o f the people in the county maybe
it would he a good idea to pass the
word to them about senate hill V74
( Inc think tor sure, you should call
your senator and representative
I HU) 327-73RV and let them know
how you feel, that's what they need
to know, not what some city
"bureaucrat" wants

Ever notice how it s sometimes the
smallest things dial make the most
difference*
That'» the way it was for me last
week *
Just last week Francic was bringing
rue home from the hospital and we saw
the smallest thing A couple o f young
fellows in a pickup ahead o f us lost
hag and box of garbage right out on die
roadway ahead o f us A common
enough sight in Boardman. what with
the wind and all
But these young fellows didn’t just drive merrily along as so many pex>
pie do these days They stopped, hacked up and began to polite up the
inter It was to he quite a j«»b lot», scattered across the road and the traffic
kind o f heavy
W ell, it was like a whole new idea popped into my head There is some
good in the world Spilt milk can he cleaned up by golly and there arc
people willing to make the effort to do so By gosh there are some folks
thal are ok. they do try to do the right thing and if more o f us join them,
things will turn out better for it Maybe even just a few o f us can make
things right again
You see. I had become really scry bitter about this teacher strike What
a needless waste of energy with no winners, all losers and to much hale
and discontent that I saw no future at all
Teachers lost more in wages during the strike than they will receiver
in raises over the entire contract The Board spent more in fighting the
strike than they would have spent on the teachers demands before the strike
The citizen committee that eventually jumped in to get it settled, put their
personal reputations on the line and lost Most importantly, the communi
ty and (he children lost an efficient, harmonious, well respected cduca
twin system
I was hitter, despondent and prepared to leave In nearly every other
district experiencing a teacher strike it has taken more than 10 years to
make up the lost ground I wasn't prepared to spend the next 10 years
here fighting a battle that doesn't exist elsewhere
We put the place up for sale The twelve hundred dollars the strike cost
us put us in default on the mortgage so it would only he a flutter of time
anyway
Francie and I both worked up our resumes Mine is in circulation, she's
updating her crexJentials She talked to an old college classnutc who nukes
$10.000 more than she does in another district with a lighter class load
Wc put together a long list o f districts that prefer mature, experienced
teachers and are willing to pay for them
I bought a few classified ads
But then we saw those young men stop to pick up the garbage
We can do that, too And it's such a decent thing to do wc ought to
And before wc even got home, each of us had, without really talking about
it. decided that that was |ust what we were going to do Pick up the mess
and nuke this just a little better place to live At least no worse for our
having passed this way
It won't be easy It never is easy to stop your headlong journey to pause
and pic k up the pieces from a garbage spill Each o f us in our own selfish
way has our own selfish goal and to interrupt that to serve our fellow nun
is sometimes |ust too much o f an imposition Too much o f a bother It
takes 11 me. and energy and sometimes a loss of pride to stop and pick up
what wc spill, right the wrong we may have been caught up in
Hut it's the only decent thing to do
The first step Gary. Marcia. I'm sorry about the ads That was the wrong
thing to do The right thing is for you. Francie and I to sit down over
dinner (I know where wc can get a good bottle of wine) and talk about
the future
The hospital trip ’ A cersical laminectomy Cured the terrible pain down
my right arm. instantly and completely The neck is still a little sore. I
tire easily yet hut much better thanks
And not so had that I was unable to start the spring herb planting
W e're going to have the finest herb garden that Morrow County has
ever seen It'll he a tourist stop tor miles around
