Heppner Elementary Doyle McCaslin Riverside sweeps Heppner golfers By Ashley Conklin Riverside’s varsity golf teams swept Heppner s golf team in mat chcs held April 16 at the Willow Creek Country Club Riverside won the boys match 302-304 in an 18-hole event while the Riverside girls won 201-213 in nine holes. Heppners teams did claim two minor victories though with a 194-200 win in nine holes for the junior varsity boys while two Hepp ner hoys defeated two Riverside girls 104 120 in nine holes Jason Michael of Riverside shot a 70 to cam boys medalist honors while Dan Strothers paced Heppner by firing a 77. Heppner s Sheila Piper earned girls medalist honors with a 44 and Sofi Strothers chipped in a 48 but they were unable to overcome Riverside. Going rough for Heppner thinclads By Ashley Conklin Heppner s thinclads found the go ing rough at the Grant Union Invita tional on Apnl 18 Competing against Class "A A " , " A " and " B " schools in cold and windy weather, Hcppncr's hoys placed fifth with 35 points while the Heppner girls did not score Union, which won the Morrow County Invitational a week earlier over Heppner, was first in the boys race with 85 points while Class " AA-' Vale won the girls team com petition with 77 points trading the way for the hoys was Bryan Padhcrg with two wins in the distance events and Wayne Wilgcrs who set a new HHS school record in the high jump Padhcrg won the 1.5(J0-mcter run in 4 12 2 and the 3.000-meter run in 9:24 2 to pace the boys Wilgcrs broke the previous school record of 6-5V) he had held with David Allstott (1977) and Richard Schmidt (1978) with a winning leap of 6-7, the best Class " A " mark in the state this season Throwers Gene Lancaster and Jason Palmer went 2-3 in the shot put respectively with throws of 44-9 and 44-1 Palmer, whose shot put was a personal best, also placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 130-11 In the long jump, Ashley Conklin jumped 18 I for fourth He added a fifth in the triple jump at 38 9*4 Jason Dougherty picked up the re maining hoys points by placing sixth in the intermediate hurdles with a time of 43.9.
