SIX-The Heppner GaaeUe-Ttmea, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, lone thinclads break 2 school records By ASHLEY CONKLIN At the Morrow County Invi tational track meet at Uma tilla on Saturday, April 14, lone thinclads broke two scho ol records. The boys team finished second with 60 points and the girls team placed 13th with eight points. There were several good marks turned in due to excellent weather con ditions. Shot putter Donnie Doherty improved his school record in the shot put with a distance of 46" 6". He placed fourth. Freshman Deena Hams was second tossing the javelin 114' 9", a new school record. She also tossed the discus. Craig Hams jumped 20' 5 V and 39' 9V in the long and triple jumps finishing first and second respectively. He dash ed 100 meters in :11.9 (sixth) and the 200 meters :24.6 (fifth). Eleven feet was the winning height in the pole vault by Randy McCabe. He went 5 10" for first in the high jump and hurled the discus 124' 1" for fourth. He was on the 4O0 meter relay team of Eric Cook, Howard Leavitt, and Brian Douglas who ran :49.l. Hurdler Chris Rea ran :18.6 for the high hurdles (fourth) and ran :50.1 for the inter mediate hurdles. Running 3.000 meters Mike Douglas and Jerry Anderson were fourth and fifth in times of 10:30.8 and 10:53.9 respec tively. Douglas ran 4:36.7 for 1,500 meters and Anderson also ran the 1,500. In the intermediate hurdles Brian Douglas was sixth in :49.2. He also ran the 100 in :12.5. Howard Leavitt high jump ed 5 6". Thrower Scott Barnett heaved the discus 103' 2" and the javelin 107' 8". Another thrower Rod Taylor put the shot 30' 94" and threw the javelin 105' 1". Eric Cook sprinted 1 :01.9 for 400 meters. Ashley Conklin long jumped (16' 1") and triple jumped (32' 8V. For 200 meters he clocked :31.0 and the 400 meters 1:06.8. lone travels to John Day for the Grant Union Invitational on Saturday, April 21 and a five-way meet at Heppner on Tuesday, April 24. Pilot Rock C, Spray 1, and Wheeler County zero. lone tennis teams defeated By ASHLEY CONKLIN The lone tennis teams were defeated at home 5-1 by the Umatilla Vikings on Tuesday, April 10. The lone Cardinal winner was Eric Pointer who beat David Maul 7-5, 7-5. Pointer is now 3-0 for the season. Mark Meyers lost to Andy Miura by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 2-6. The boys doubles team of Mike Rietmann and Ignacio Garzon were beaten 2-6, 4-6 by Maul and Raul Hildalgo. In girls doubles Sandi Wright and Patty McElligott were defeated 0-6, 2-6 by Misty Green and Kim Coffey. In girls singles Kim McCabe was beaten 1-6, 0-6 by Angela Anderson. In straight sets, Paula Anderson lost 0-6, 0-6 to Jane Barbour. On Saturday, April 21, the Cardinals will play Stanfield at lone at 11 a.m. The Cards then host Arlington on Tues day, April 24. HHS golfers fail to improve showing By TRAVIS HYATT The Heppner golf team traveled to Riverside last Thursday to try to improve on their third place showing a week before. But due to the loss of Pat Struthers and Jon Mitchell who were at the skills contest in Pendleton, the golf ers took third again with 362 total strokes. "We did miss Pat and Jon, although it gave some other people a chance to golf on varsity and also gave Pat and Jon a chance to participate in the science skills contest," said Coach Duane Neiffer. The team was lead by Jun ior Dave Green who shot a fantastic twelve over 74; Kevin Hughes improved four strokes and shot an 88. Travis Harrison and Ken Curtis shot even one hundreds and Jack Estberg had a 107. Riverside was second with 332 strokes and Heppner third. All parents of Little Leaguer and anyone ele interested are invited. The hard work of past weeks really payed off in the meet Friday March 30,at Milton Freewater against Mac Hi and Elgin. The Heppner girls took eight first places out of fifteen events. There were also eight other places recieved by the girls. The boys took six first place winds out of sixteen and had thirteen other marks good enough to place. There were six personal best records broken. For the boys, John Moyer had a per sonal best in the Long jump of 19" 104". Sid Kennedy threw a personal best in the javelin with 153' 2" . Archie Luc us broke two of his personal records. One in the Long jump and the other in the Triple jump. Two personal bests Mustangs Pirates 4-1 By TRAVIS HYATT The Heppner Mustangs dropped their record to 1-2 with a 4-1 loss to the Riverside Pirates last Tuesday in River side. Lack of hitting was the problem for the Mustangs who had only five hits. The Mus tangs have only scored one run in the last fourteen inn ings. "I think it's too early in the season to say there's been a let down in our hitting. We're capable of hitting the ball better than we are now, but we have a lo of young players and it might just take some time," said Coach Mike Royer, Stanfield downs Cards By ASHLEY CONKLIN Ione'i tennis teams were defeated 5-2 by the Stanfield Tigers on Saturday, April 14. Eric Pointer beat Sally Alexander 7-6, 6-2 to remain undefeated for the season. The Cardinals other win came from the doubles team of Sandi Wright and Paula Anderson who beat Shelly Edgerly and Julie Tracey 4-6, 6-3,6-4. In boys first singles Mark Meyers lost in straight sets to Carlo Chavez 6-7, 1-6. The boys doubles team of Mike Riet mann and Ignacio Garzon lost 2-6, 3-6 to the mixed doubles team of Chavez and Jean Wright. Patty McElligott and Kim McCabe were defeated 2-6, 5-7 by Alexander and Shirlen Baily. Wright got beat 3-6, 1-6 in singles play by Baily, and Anderson lost to Tracy by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 4-6. One of Orr's first places was In the javelin with a 127 9" throw. She also recieved first plae in the 300 meter inter mediate hurdles with a time of 51.4 With the great efforts of Payne, she recieved three first place finishes: in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.0, the 200 meter dash in 27.3 seconds, and the 30' BV distance for the shot put was not only good enough for first place but also for a personal best. Chris Stevens led off the first inning with a walk, Bryan Byrd walked two outs, Brad Trumbull hit a triple and two runs scored. Riverside scored again in the fourth. Byrd led off with a walk and stole second, Trum bull drove him in with a single. They added an insurance run in the fifth. Heppner's best inning was the seventh. Jim McConnell led off with a single followed by Riehl who got on with an error. After pinch hitter Dave Pedro flew out to right. Loran Hayes walked to load the bases, then Troy Hyatt flew out for the second out. The tone RBI was a walk to Ron Doherty, and Travis Hyatt grounded out to third to end the game. The bad news of the week was the loss of Mark Way. "Not only can Mark do a lot of things well, he's one of the seniors and we need that experience on the field," said Royer. In the Boo meter run, Jodie Padberg had a time of 2.49.5 which placed her first, Luna Reid had a person best time inthe 1.500 of 5.49 and her time of 13 09 gave her second place in the 300 meter run. The last event for the girls was a good one, giving them ti time of 4.38 8 in the 1,(UX) meter relay. The efforts from Mancy Martin, Missy Turner, Jodi Padberg, and Pam Orr were good enough for a first place finish. The boys started off the meet by getting second in the 4(K) meter relay with a time of 48 1. The team was made up by Archie Lucas, Hod Cole, Chris McLaughlin, and John Moyer. Moyer took first place in the triple jump with 39' 4". A jump of 17" in the long jump was a personal best for Lucas, giving him fourth place. Another personal best by Lucas was in the triple jump. The jump of 34' 3' a" was good for a second place. One more to make a person al best was Sid Kennedy. He threw the javelin 153' 2" and collected a first place for his Don't Gamble with Mother Nature! Sid also threw the discus 105' 9' V for second place. John Martin's efforts in the 8(H) and 1500 meter runs added to the team's wins. He placed third In the 1,500 with a time of 4 42; and he recieved first nt(wA In (hit ftUI mater run 2.15.5. Chris McLiiuglin and Rod, Cole placed first and second in the 110 hurdles with times of 20.0 and 20.1. McLaughlin also pluced first in the 300 meter , hurdles with a time of 48 7. With a time of 2B.2 In the 2oo meter dash, Rod Cole pluced third. Todd Lindsay jumped 5' 6" in the high Jump to get second place, The last event of the day was the boys 1 600 meter relay. Chris McLaughlin, Rod Cole, Sid Kennedy and John Martin, worked together for a time of 4:01, and a third place finish. The Heppner girls came home with first place, coming from the combined efforts of all the girls. The scores were, Elgin: 57, Mac-Hi: 54, and Heppner :57.
