Fillies place 1st at Warm wcatner and top com petition brings forth top ef forts and the Heppner girls track learn responded to both last Saturday by bringing home the championship of the Morrow County Invitational track meet at Umatilla. Records, state bests and personal bests featured both boys and girls efforts in what is annually one of the most competitive class "A" track meets In Oregon. Final team scores for the girls were Heppner 93', Wah tonks 53, Umatilla 45, Stan field 40, Weston-McEwen and Enterprise 36, Joseph 34, Con don 24, Wasco County 22, Imbler 20, Echo 16'. Helix 13, lone 8, Riverside 7, Pilot Rock 6, Spray 1, Whether County tero. Boys scores were Joseph 82, lone 60, Umatilla 56, Enter prise 46, Wahtonka 44, Imbler 39, Riverside 35, Stanfield 30, Arlington 29, Helix 28, Hep pner 27, Condon 16, Pilot Rock HHS girls place 1st at Condon if" Sephi Poyn crowei ihe mih By MISSY TURNER With the hard work and efforts of the Heppner track team, the girls ran, jumped, and threw their way to the top of 14 other teams at the Condon Invitational track meet last Saturday, April 7. The boys efforts and tough competition led them to a fifth place finish. The girls team was led by Stephi Payne who brough in 24 points, by winning firsts in the 200 meters and 100 meter dashes. She also helped bring the 1,600 meter relay and 400 meter relay to second place finishes. lone boys By ASHLEY CONKLIN The lone boys track team won a four-way track meet on Wednesday, April 11 at Hep pner with 126 points. The girls team was fourth with 13 points. Setting a school record in the shot put at 45' 5" Donnie Doherty won that event. Girls school records were set by Denna Hams in the discus 87' 0" (placing second) and the javelin 10C' 5" (third place.) She also put the shot 28' 11V (fourth) and long jumped If 84" (fifth). High jumping 5' 8" and throwing the discus 120' 6" Randy McCabe was first in Easter Baskets 8-Dalloon Bouquet With 676-5444 Cara Costa 10, Weston-McEwen 7, Wasco County 4, Spray and Wheeler County zero. Stephanie Payne led the Heppner girls winning the 100 meter dash in meet record time of : 12.4 (which is also a school record), earning a blue ribbon in the 200 meters with :27.2 and helping on two relay teams. The 1,600 meter relay team of Payne, Pam Orr, Jodi Padberg and Missy Turner clocked 4:27.7 for the blue and the 400 meter relay team of Janelle McElhaney, Padberg, Orr and Payne earned second with :53.7. Other firsts for Heppner included a 122' 3" toss in the javelin by Orr and a 2:35.1 clocking in the 800 meters by Padberg. The boys were paced by John Moyer, John Martin and Sid Kennedy. Moyer earned third place ribbons in the long Jump (19 11") and triple jump 39'6Mr). Martin ran 2:11.5 in the 800 meters for third and line. Others who brought in points for the Fillies were Pan Orr; with a second place in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the Javelin. She also contributed to the two relay teams. Malinda Eubanks placed sec ond in the shot put, and earned a fifth place finish in the discus. Lana Reid ran a great 3,000 meter run for a second place finish and also a sixth in the 1,500 meter run. Jodi Padberg put in her share of the points with a second in the 1,500, second in the 800 and also helped out the two relay teams. Missy Turner added points with her second place in tracksters both. He also triple jumped 37' 6" for third place, and ran the 400 meters in 1:00.4 for sec ond. Distance runner Mike Doug las won the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:45.4 and the 3,000 meters in 10:13.1. He also was on the l.wo meter relay team of Ashley Conklin, Rod Taylor and Eric Cook which placed first in 4:43.5. Another distance runner, Jerry Anderson was second in the 1,500 meters at 4:58.5 and the 3,000 meters 10:53.8. Hurdler Chris Rea won the highs in :19.4 and finished third in the intermediates at :51.5. Padberg was third in the 1,500 meter run running 5:31; Turner collected a fourth at 400 meters with 1:05.2; Orr was also fourth in the 300 meter hurdles running :53.0. There were several fifth place finishers. Missy Gates ran 13:50.2 at 3,000 meters; Mclinds Eubanks threw 31' 2 V in the shot put and Nancy Martin tied for fith in the high jump with 4' 6". Todd Lindsay also tied for fifth place in the boys high jump with a leap of 5' 8". "Overall, I thought it was our best performance of the season," said head coach Dale Conklin. "There was a tre mendous effort on the part of the girls and two of the boys (Moyer and Kennedy) had personal bests. Janelle McElhany help ed out the Fillies efforts with a third place in the 100 meter hurdles and also ran a leg of the 400 relay team. Sandra Wattenburger did her part with a fourth in the high jump. Missy Gates had a fifth in the 3,000 and made a great cut in her time. Nancy Martin also brought in points with a sixth place finish in the 800 meter run. Everyone gave a great effort to bring home the first place trophy. take 1st at feet for fifth, and was on the second place 800 meter relay team of Eric Cook, Rod Taylor and Scott Barnett who ran 1:56.4. Brian Douglas finished sec ond in the intermediate hur dles at :51.0 and the high hurdles at : 19.7. He was third in the 100 and the 800 in times of :13.0 and 2:24.9 respect ively. Thrower Scott Barnett gain ed thirds in discus (103' 6" ) and the javelin (113" 0"). Ashley Conklin was fourth in the long jump at 15' 6" and fourth in the 200 at :29.4. There were seven state bests for class A schools re corded at the meet for the girls and five slate bests in boys competition at the meet in a comparison of those state bests recorded in the April 10 edition of "The Oregonian." "This is one of our most satisfying wins," said Conklin. Last year the girls won every meet they entered by the Morrow Wounty Invitational. The H.H.S. thinclads con tinued to seek improvement this week as they journeyed to Condon on Tuesday for a four-way meet and Saturday travel to John Day for the Eastern Oregon Invitational track meet. Field events are slated to begin at 11 a.m. at Grant Union High School. Heppner will be competing at home next Tuesday hosting a five-way meet slated to begin at 4 p.m. I, . Following behind Moyer was John Martin with 14 points: first in the 80 meter run and fourth in the 1,500 meter run. Sid Kennedy helped out by adding a third from the javelin and fourth in the discus. Todd Lindsey also contributed with his sixth place finish in the high jump. Heppner 5:22.1 for 1,500 meters (third) and hurled the shot 34' 9'V lor fourth. A third place was earned by Eric Cook in the 400 meters at 1:01.8 plus a fourth at 800 meters inn 2:29.1. Another thrower. It was a small meet but some great efforts came out of the day. The meet was ori ginally scheduled for the April 10, but had to be rescheduled due to bad weather, but that didn't slow anyone down. Missy Gates took charge of both the 800 and the 1,500 meter runs coming out on (bp for two first places. The 800jneter relay team, consisting of Stephi Payne, Pam Orr, Jodi Padberg and Missy Turner, also took first place along with the 1,600 meter relay; Payne , Orr, Padberg, and Mancy Martin. Orr also had a first in the javelin. Payne finished first in the 200; Padberg first in the 400 meter. Janelle McElhaney took firsts in the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Ma linda Eubanks threw to a first in the shot putt and Turner finished first in the 100 with Cammie Papineau third in the 100. A second place finish came in the 400 meter for Nancy Martin who also took third in the high jump. Papineau also has a third in the 300 meter hurdles. Sandi Wattenburger brought in a fourth in the high jump. The boys results came out with first place finishes won in the 300 meter hurdles by Chris McLaughlin ; 800 meter run by John Martin, and 400 meter dash by Archie Lucas. Greg Orr jumped to second place in both the long jump and the high jump and John Moyer took second in the triple jump. Third place finishers were Sid Kennedy in the shot put; Chris McLaughlin, in the 100 meter high hurdles; Archie Lucas in the 200 meter dash; and John Martin in the 3,000 meter run. Kennedy took fourth in the discus. Lucas place fourth in the high jump, Orr took fourth in the triple jump; McLaugh lin took fourth in the 100 meter dash. Jason Palmer brought in two fifth place finishes, one in the discus and the other in the 200 meter dash.
