IHS tracksters finish first in iy vsiii,!:y(oki,in By winning 10 out of 17 events, the lone tracksters finished first In a five-way meet at llcppner on Tuesday April 12 with 101 points, lone competed against Sherman County of More, Heppner, Echo, Wheeler County of Fos sil and Condon. Tim Pntlnn led the way with three first place wins and helped achieve a fourth. He won the high jump at 5'I0". the lwi-nnd 2()0-meter in 0:11 9 and 0:24 B respec tively. The team's first place time was 1:426 Double winners for the Car dinals were Denny Starr and Mike Douglas. Starr threw the javelin HH'l" and the discus 12R.H". both firsts. He was also a member of the second place l.oo -meter relay team which included Mark Meyers. Scott Harnett and Brian Doug las. who ran it in 4:25 0. High points for the girls included a 128'8" toss in the javelin by Pam Orr which set a new school record and was the best reported effort in the state so far. The old record was set by Kellie Hammond in 1981 with a toss of 119'8". Lana Reid won two events bv capturing the ROO-and 1.500 meter runs. She ran a person al best in the 800 of 2:58.1. For a change of pace, the 8(io-meter relay was run in stead of the usual 400 relay and the girls' team of Tiffany I.nwson. Jodi Padberg, Pam Orr and Stephanie Payne turned in a clocking of 1:54.7. That time is better than any time turned in last year by Class A schools in the state of Oregon, said Fleppner's head coach Dale Conklin. "I was a little apprehensive going into the meet that we would do so well because of the few number of boys we have competing." said head coach Dale Conklin. "But. we had super efforts on the part of all lot of people, including the bovs." Final combined scores were: Wahtonka 213. Heppner 153. Sherman County 149. Lyle ion. Riverside 92. lone 86. Arlington 76. Wasco County 47. Culver 39. Trout Lake 22. Wishram and Wheeler County 10. Dufur 7. leading the onslaught for the Heppner thinclads was Stephanie Payne who barely missed earning the individual high-point honor for the meet. That trophy went to Shelley Woodside of Wasco County with 29 points. Payne had 28 with first place efforts in both the 100 and 200 meters and fourth place finishes in the long jump and triple jump, and event not normally held in girls competition. Jodi Padberg was also a double event winner as she earned blue ribbons in both the ROO-and 1.500-meter runs. She was also on the 1.600 meter relay team that set a meet record by winning in a time of 4:33.7. Rounding, out the relay team were Nancy Martin. Tiffany Lawson and Pa m Orr. Padberg was also on the second place 400-meter relay team as were Janelle McElhany. Lawson and Orr. The battle ended with lone leading in match scores (3-2) when darkness prevented the last match from being played. The boys were led by John Mover who collected a second in the triple jump with a leap of IW'IO1!". He was fourth in the long jump with 18'10V and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Along with Chris McLaughlin. Craig Miles and Alex Lindsay. Mover helped the 400-meter relay team to another fourth. Lindsay added a sixth to the bovs scoring with an 1854 leap in the long jump. Wesley Marlatt earned fifth place finishes in the shot put and discus. His throw in the discus of ill' was a personal best. Lawson earned a second in the 200 meters and a tie for third at 100 meters to add to her relay efforts. McElhany the Pirates as Roger Childers and Jeff Ball defeated Terry Seel and Larry Carroll 8-3 in a pro set. Sharon Crowell and Paula Anderson. Ione's only girls on the team, were defeated by Helen Daltoso and Isli Viall 4-8. In singles. Sherry Clement placed sec ond in the shot put with a toss of 32'1" and Anne Murray was fifth with a throw of 28'5". Murray was also sixth in the javelin. Lana Reid placed in both of the long distance races with a fifth place effort in the 1.500 meters and was fourth in the 3.000-meter race. Lisa Wilson collected a sixth at 3.000 meters. The HHS tracksters compe ted in a five-way meet in Condon last Tuesday and Fri day will be involved in the Wasco County Invitational at Wahtonka High School at The Dalles. The meet will begin with field events at 4 p.m. Pirates feated Brandon Wegner 6-3, 3-6. 6-2. Troy Lindstrom played Ivan Dike but was not able to finish due to darkness. Eric Pointer defeated Scott Piper 6-0. 6-3. the third straight win for the freshman. lone will meet Stanfield at 3 p.m. in Stanfield on April 22 and Umatilla at lone at 3 p.m. on April 26. 10.112
